BSRG Field Trip 2018 Siliciclastic and Carbonate Sedimentology Lusitanian Basin - Portugal We are delighted to invite you to the second 2018 BSRG field trip led by Dr. Matthew Watkinson from the University of Plymouth and EPI Geoscience. This 4-days field trip in Portugal (Lusitanian Basin) is open to postgraduate students (MSc and PhD) and early career geoscientists (from academia and industry). The trip will focus on spectacular coastal exposures of Mesozoic siliciclastic and carbonate successions deposited prior to and during the opening of the central North Atlantic. The basin is also characterised by syn-depositional salt tectonics. The wide range of topics and depositional environments covered mean that the trip is interesting for all geoscientists. We will be based in Ericeira (near Lisbon) that is a traditional fishing village and a popular surfing destination. Therefore, this trip will be a very good opportunity to meet sedimentology-related researchers from all over U.K and Europe in an informal environment. Itinerary: Day 1 (26/10): Travel to Lisbon, meeting in Lisbon airport at 6 pm, drive to Ericeira. Day 2 (27/10): Peniche and Obidos area: Lower Jurassic ramp carbonates, including high TOC mudstones. Lower-Middle Jurassic carbonate submarine fans. Salt structures. Late Jurassic fluvial facies. Day 3 (28/10): Santa Cruz area: Sedimentation around late Jurassic syn-rift salt diapir (deep-marine to fluvial clastics). Lourinha area: Late Jurassic fluvial facies and architecture (famous for dinosaur palaeontology!). Day 4 (29/10): Ericeira area: Early Cretaceous post-rift mixed clastic-carbonate shallow marine (deltaic, shoreface, carbonate platform) sequence stratigraphy Day 5 (30/10): Cascais and Gunicho area: Late Jurassic syn-rift deep-water carbonates (turbidites, debrites,…) to Early Cretaceous post-rift shallow marine carbonates (Middle-East type carbonate facies) and clastics. Drive back to Lisbon. 26 th -30 st October 2018 Trip objectives: (i) Understand basin-scale stratigraphy and palaeogeography in term of tectonics and global sea-level changes. (ii) Describe and evaluate the controls on sequence stratigraphy and sedimentary architecture in a range of clastic (slope, deltaic, shoreface, fluvial), carbonate, and mixed systems. (iii) Evaluate the significance of these exposures to petroleum systems in the Lusitanian Basin (through comparison with seismic data) and adjacent Atlantic Margin basins and as analogues for exploration and production (e.g. North Sea, Middle East). Meeting is at 6 pm on the 26/10 in Lisbon airport. Anyone wishing to leave during the afternoon on the 30 th , arrangement will be made to transport them to the airport.
