Women have made great strides within our global sportscommunity. The arena of sports has also been influencedby these milestones and accomplishments. In tribute tothe ladies of sports, who leave it all out there on thecourt, field, ring, track or mat, we highlight and celebratea few stars that shine in the Milky Way of our much lovedsports universe. They are daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, aunts, role models, mentors, authors, volunteers and just inspiring and phenomenalwomen.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee and she’s all woman. Laila Ali, more than a pretty face and the daughter of thebeloved and famed Mohamed Ali, set the boxing world ablaze and a chattering. This five foot 10 inch boxer witha 70.4 inch reach caught the eye of boxing fans whenshe won eight fights in a row. Many fans wanted to seeher face the daughter of George Foreman, FreedaForeman or the daughter of Joe Frazier, Jackie Frazier-Lyde. Well destiny was met on June 8, 2001. The matchwas dubbed the Ali/Frazier IV in reference to their fathers’famous fight trilogy. Laila and Jackie’s match made pay-for-view history. It was the first pay-for-view matchbetween two Black women. Ali’s boxing record to datestands at 24 wins in 24 matches. She had 21 winsby knockouts. That’s right, no losses! Laila was namedby the International Boxing Association, the Women’sAssociation and the International Woman’s BoxingFederation as a Super Middleweight Champion.Currently, she was just named as the Women’s SportsFoundation incoming president. She will serve a two-year term as an official spokesperson, and will helpshape strategic direction and development initiatives forthe organization. The Women’s Sports Foundation is anational charitable educational organization dedicatedto advancing the lives of girls and women throughphysical activity. Balancing work and home life, Laila andher husband Curtis Conway, a former National FootballLeague (NFL) wide receiver, have their hands full withtheir four children (he has three from a previousmarriage), and they are expecting their second together. Who knows maybe there’s a third generation boxer inthe making?

Today, minorities are experiencing high school dropout ratesin excess of 50 percent in many urban cities across thenation. Students that do graduate are having a more difficulttime finding universities they can afford—and where theirculture is appreciated.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) haveserved the social, cultural and educational needs ofAmerica’s young men and women for the last 170 years.Their rich traditions and academic excellence have producedthousands of leaders in the fields of business, medicine, politics, law and sports.

Yet, many students across the United States are unaware ofthe significance and relevance of these great institutions. That’swhy Black Educational Events has created HBCU Today, acomprehensive guide to our nation’s HBCUs.

HBCUs are producing the highest number of African-American Ph.D.s per capita and, according to GramblingUniversity President Horace Judson, at a time when theUnited States is falling behind China and India in producingengineers and scientists, universities like Grambling havetailor-made their missions to be on the international stage.

Quality HBCU educational experiences are found not just inlarge, well-endowed private schools like Howard, Hampton orTuskegee. From North Carolina A&T to Grambling StateUniversity, there are strong HBCUs across the country. Manyof these state schools were created as “land grant” institutionsafter the Civil War to educate freed slaves. Today, althoughtheir missions have broadened, schools like Florida A&M, PrairieView A&M, Jackson State, Texas Southern University, andAlabama State University still carry the proud HBCU name andtraditions.

The glaring reality is that without the role and function of HBCUs,the landscape of America would be quite different. Had it notbeen for the desire of Heman Marion Sweat and a rejectionletter from the University of Texas Law School, there would nothave been a Texas Southern Law School. Had there not beena Dr. Benjamin Mays at Morehouse, there might not have beena Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our nation’s 104 HBCUs are having an impact beyond justeducating young people—they are having a tremendouseconomic impact on the communities in which they arelocated.

That’s why HBCU Today is committed to spreading theawareness of these great colleges and universities tominorities across the country.

Described by adminers as communicating “serenity and sheer joy of being alive,” Dan Sekanwagi’s inspiring work exhitbits a remarkablyhigh sense of adventure. Marching to the proverbial “beat of a different drummer” empowers this artist to compose harmonioussymphonies of form, color and multiple styles. While his talent and influence upon other leading East African modernists remain evident.Sekanwagi continues to challenge and expand his visual, artistic and personal horizons.
