A worker at a Keilor East warehouse has been back-paid more than $6000 aer receiving less than the minimum hourly rate for more than a year.

An investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman resulted in the warehouse employee being reimbursed $6400 aer being underpaid the minimum rate for more than 12 months in 2012-13.

is year, ve workers from Melbournes north-west and northern suburbs have been back-paid a total of $70,500, with the single biggest recovery being $34,000 for a clerical worker at a Greensborough real estate agency.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said ensuring sta were paid the correct wages on time was one of the most fundamental obligations of an employer.

Employees should not be put in a position where they may struggle to pay their bills because they havent been paid the correct wages on time, Ms James said. We have a exible and fair approach when inadvertent mistakes happen and employers are willing to co-operate with us, she said.

Ms James says the overwhelming majority of employers want to do the right thing by their employees and get it right when it comes to workplace laws.

More than $23 million was recovered for about 15,000 underpaid workers nationally during the 2013-14 nancial year. More information is at www.fairwork.gov.au.

Brimbank detectives are on the hunt for a cross-dressing armed robber who held up a Taylors Hill service station last week.

Police were called to the Caltex service station at Watervale shopping centre about 7.20pm on March 30 aer a man, who was dressed in womens clothing, demanded cash from the Taylors Road premises.

e man, who wore a wig, wide-brimmed hat, dress and thongs, went to the drinks fridge before approaching the counter and producing a home-made rearm and demanding cash.

threatened the attendant before taking the cash drawer from the register and eeing.

About 15 minutes later, the oenders held up a service station on Hampshire Road, Sunshine, where they stole an amount of cash and cigarettes.

e last incident occurred at 6.45am when the two men held up the attendant at a service station on Ballarat Road, Albion.

At this location, the oenders ed the store with no cash.

No one was injured in the robberies.Police arrested a 15-year-old St Albans boy

last week in relation to the robberies, while

Detective Senior Sergeant Cameron Reinke, of the Brimbank crime investigation unit, said some money was handed over before the man le. He was last seen heading north along Taylors Road.

e armed robbery occurred just hours before service stations in St Albans, Sunshine and Albion were held up by two knife-wielding oenders between 1am and 6.45am on Tuesday.

Investigators believe the same two oenders are responsible for the three incidents, starting with an armed robbery at a service station on Main Road West in St Albans just before 1am.

Two oenders entered the store and

a second oender, believed to be of African appearance, remains at large.

No charges have been laid.Police are keen to speak to the driver of a

green car that pulled up at the Ballarat Road service station which was robbed and then drove away.

Brimbank sports clubs have an inux of new talent aer 1000 children from nancially struggling families were given a chance to play sport.

Brimbank councils In2Sport initiative provides up to $200 to cover club fees for children aged six to 18 whose families have health-care or pension concession cards.

e 1000th application came from Sunshine Heights Junior Soccer Club, one of nine soccer clubs involved in the program.

So far, about 100 children have signed up to the club for this season, including 12 for the girls team, 13 for the under-sevens squad and 16 for the under-13s.

Club president Michael Sposato said it was great knowing that children, who otherwise may not have participated in sport, could now join up.

Playing sport does come at a cost to families

but, as a club, were not here to make any money, we just want to facilitate a community love of the world game, Sposato said.

He says the funding will go towards memberships and uniforms.

Brimbank administrative chairman John Watson said it was very satisfying to support so many young people taking up sport.

e program is so popular among our community that we had to reduce the application period for winter and year-round sports based on the high number of applications, Mr Watson said.

Forty-nine clubs are registered in In2Sport for this year. Applicants can receive up to 75 per cent of membership costs, with a maximum of $200 per child per year. e fee payments are passed on directly to the sports clubs.

e director of a Deer Park real estate agency has been sentenced to jail for misusing trust account money.

Sole director of Boris Real Estate, Suzanne Zvizdalo, was convicted of 13 charges last week relating to fraudulently handling trust account money and failing to keep trust account records.

Ms Zvizdalo, 32, was sentenced to three months in prison, wholly suspended for 12 months. She has been ordered to pay more than $46,000 in compensation and court costs

dealing with are following the rules and not mismanaging their money.

Consumer Aairs Victoria suspended Ms Zvizdalo and her businesss licence in 2013 aer allegations from landlords that they had not been paid rental arrears, among other oences.

e aected landlords were told by Consumer Aairs to nd a new property manager, while aected tenants ceased rental payments to Boris Real Estate and made other arrangements with their landlords.

Dr Noone said while most real estate agents did the right thing, Consumer Aairs was

of $1110 and must also perform 150 hours of community services as part of an 18-month community corrections order. Boris Real Estate, a formerly licensed boutique agency was also convicted and ned $10,000.

Consumer Aairs Victoria director Claire Noone said she was pleased that the courts were taking these matters seriously and imposing appropriate penalties.

is sends a message to the industry that there are strong consequences for estate agents who mismanage trust funds, said Dr Noone.

We want to give home owners and buyers the condence to know that the agents they are

Cracks and holes are already forming on a Sunshine bike and walking path only months aer it was installed.

Construction of the $4.8 million path between Sunshine railway station and Ashley Street started late last year. e new path is part of a shared-user path from the Western Ring Road to Tottenham station.

e construction is part of the Regional Rail Link project, which includes work on landscaping and a carpark at Ardeer train station.

Long-time Sunshine resident John Francis, who lives near the bike path, said he was concerned to discover cracks and holes in the concrete, including two holes that had bits of reinforcing mesh sticking out.

Mr Francis branded the work ordinary and said it could pose a hazard to users.

He said that, in contrast, Maribyrnongs

portion of the bike path was awless. Im surprised at the condition its in, considering its relatively new, Mr Francis said.

Presumably, theyve used dierent sub-contractors for dierent parts of the path and some have done a better job than others.

Brimbank council infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis said path construction was still under way and, as a result, had yet to be inspected for quality.

e works are not yet completed and construction is still in progress. e path element of the works is nearly complete and the landscaping works have commenced and will be completed over the winter period, Mr Younis said. e practical completion inspection will assess quality and any defects discovered will be rectied by the contractor.

Brimbank Embona detectives were told a man armed with a small knife entered the store at Brimbank Central shopping centre about 9pm on March 22. He ed empty-handed when confronted by the manager. Hes described as Caucasian, in his 20s and wearing a white and blue hooded jumper. Information to Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000.

Community Fund opensBrimbank charities can apply for up to $5000 from the latest round of the Brimbank Community Fund. Brimbank Community Fund committee chairman John Tanner said the focus was on investing in young people who are struggling to stay in school, get jobs or remain healthy. The fund is a charitable account of the Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation, and grants go towards helping not-for-prot organisations provide equipment, material aid, projects and programs. Applications close on April 17. Details at www.brimbank.vic.gov.au/bcf.

Immunisation sessionBrimbank councils next immunisation session is at the West Sunshine Community Centre on April 9 from 2pm. Councils immunisation service is only available to those who hold a green Medicare card. Blue Medicare cardholders are advised to contact their GP for services via the national immunisation program. For information call 9249 4919.

Its where Alice fell down the rabbit hole and where Snow White stumbled across the quaint cottage of the seven dwarves.

Nature is undoubtedly the starting point for many childhood adventures, and Brimbank Parks Welcome Day is hoping to celebrate this green connection on April 9.

Parks Victoria and the People and Parks Foundation are inviting families to the Keilor East area of the park at 10am on ursday for a day of exploration, prizes and giveaways.

As well, Brimbank Parks new adventure trail will be opened and children will be encouraged to discover the plants and animals that rely on the Maribyrnong River.

ere will also be a mini-beast discovery, where families can join a park ranger to discover a bugs world beside the Maribyrnong

River, using nets and microscopes to examine their ndings.

Kathryn Campbell, mananger of Parks Victorias Healthy Parks Healthy People initiative, says research shows parks are good for physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

For example, sitting in a park for 15 minutes restores our capacity to focus and increases our sense of well-being. Play is also important for a childs physical health and development, Ms Campbell says.

Unstructured play in parks engages their imaginations, increases their physical activity and can make them calmer and more focused.

Todd McNeal makes music. e Caroline Chisholm Catholic College

music teacher and composer will have his award-winning composition, Gis, performed at Australias biggest choir festival, Choral Fest, in Melbourne later this week.

e Sunshine resident, who has composed for some of the top youth choirs in Australia, was commissioned by Brightons Firbank College 18 months ago to compose a piece that the school choir would perform in Europe.

His composition was based on a poem written by Aboriginal poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal, telling the story of a young man trying to woo a woman.

Its sort of funny and romantic, McNeal said. Its a brilliant poem with a brilliant story.

It was also a winner. Firbank College choir

Bel Canto took out rst place in the treble choir section aer performing Gis at the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival last year.

I was very pleased that the school liked the piece and it went down well with the audience, McNeal said. Its exciting for me that its being done here in Melbourne.

I wrote some operas that had a little bit of success in the UK when I was rst writing music about six or seven years ago, I found this poem in a book of nursery rhymes Id been reading to my daughters and I thought Id try something dierent and write choral music. I found a way of combining my love of pop and jazz and music with my skill in classical music.

We are a not for prot organisation and registered charity whose goal is to stop the killing in pounds and shelters, by helping our companion animals in need, and promoting responsible pet ownership. Every eort is made to retrain dogs and cats that have been unfortunate enough to have a neglected background. We will keep a dog or cat in our care for as long as it takes. If we do not have a suitable foster carer we will hold them at commercial kennels until one is found.

More than 500 Brimbank residents turned to the Energy and Water Ombudsman Victoria (EWOV) over the past year to settle their utility grievances.

A total of 522 complaints and queries from Brimbank residents were lodged in 2014. More than 41 per cent of complaints related to energy disconnections or water restrictions, or their imminent cut-o.

Two further issues plaguing Brimbank residents were debt collection (198 cases) or repayment diculties (109).

In the second half of 2013, 341 Brimbank households had gas, electricity or water turned o or struggled to pay bills. In the second half of last year, there had been a decline in equivalent cases, to 270.

Energy and water ombudsman Cynthia Gebert said the most recent report showed credit complaints had increased by 207 per cent in ve years.

e community-wide issue of energy and water aordability is highly concerning, Ms Gebert said. [It] requires changes to industry practice and greater collaboration between industry, regulators, government and the community sector.

Ms Gebert urged customers to contact energy or water companies as soon as possible if they are experiencing nancial hardship and cant pay bills.

If customers have attempted and failed to resolve their issue directly with their company, then EWOV may be able to assist.

Kaycee Talevska will live below the poverty line next month to emphasise just how hard the experience is.

e 21-year-old Caroline Springs student has vowed to live o $2 a day for ve days, from May 4-8, to raise money for schools in Cambodia, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste and raise awareness of the importance of education in the ird World.

We do take for granted a lot of the things we have, Ms Talevska says. People in Cambodia [are] forced to work to survive and they dont have the opportunities to do what we can.

Ms Talevska says her bachelor of arts degree opened her eyes to the world and dierent ways of life. She says learning about dierent cultures and people made her more grateful for the opportunities here.

People exactly the same as you, the same age as you, are living a life [of poverty] just because the opportunities dier. I couldve been born in one of those countries.

But she wasnt. So Ms Talevska is ditching the food and easily accessible water to experience what it means to be a 21-year-old in a country ravaged by poverty.

Its more on a personal level because I will feel the hunger and I will feel the belly pain.

So far, shes raised more than $250 and is hoping to hit the $400 mark at least.

Shes hoping her experiences will resonate with her friends and others.

Aged-care residents at the Doutta Galla Grantham Green centre in St Albans were thrilled to see more than 100 visitors through their doors on a Meet Your Neighbour Day last week.

ere was no need for curious neighbours to peer over the fence as all were welcome to the centre as part of the Brimbank council celebrations on March 28.

Doutta Galla Grantham Green manager Kathy Evans said the initiative was about giving the aged-care residents a chance to

get to know locals, and Brimbank residents a chance to tour and learn about the centre.

Visitors enjoyed a performance from the residents choir, a free sausage sizzle and a car boot sale. Many of our older residents just dont get out into the community like they use to due to their health and limited mobility, so this day is important, Ms Evans said. It brings new visitors into our residence for our residents to say hello and chat to.
