Gears of War 3 starts eighteen months

after the fall of Jacinto (humanity’s last remaining city) in the second title. The Gears now call a converted aircraft carrier (dubbed the “Raven’s Nest”) their home, just off the island of Vectes. Vectes is also home to the Stranded, as well as other survivors of E-Day. The COG is no more and a terrifying new enemy has popped up in the form of the Lambent. See, the Imulsion that powered Sera’s once-great cities has infected certain members of the Locust horde, turning them into this frightening new enemy that threatens both Locust and humans alike. Gears 3 promises a story that will answer all those burning questions that we all have regarding the series. It’s being written by Karen Traviss, author of three Gears novels who is currently working on another two. Though you’ll spend the majority of your time playing as the indomitable Mr Fenix, control will occasionally switch to other characters, letting you witness events from their perspective.

Four-player campaign co-op rears its beautiful head for the first time in the series. Expect to see new Locust enemies (like the Digger Boomer, Kantus Knight and the Siege Beast) to accompany all the terrifying new Lambent enemies, as well as the usual array of fresh, powerful weaponry (like the new Retro Lancer and the Digger Launcher) with which to shoot holes in things. Expect a few new friendly faces as well (first appearance of heavily armoured women FTW). Also - mechs!

On the multiplayer side of things, Horde 2.0 will enhance on the excellent cooperative Horde Mode from the previous title, promising to bring a lot more strategy into the mix by allowing players to place turrets, set up command posts, erect laser fences and more. The introduction of the occasional boss enemy (like Brumaks) in Horde 2.0 should make things infinitely more interesting. Meanwhile, Beast Mode flips Horde on its head, putting players in control of various Locust critters as they attempt to swarm COG members. Killing enemies allows you to upgrade to a stronger Locust class, letting you take control of everything from lowly Tickers to deadly Berserkers as you progress.

On the competitive multiplayer side of things, expect the usual fast, frenetic action in a variety of game modes, with dedicated servers promising to provide an unbiased and much-improved experience. You’ll unlock a variety of interesting rewards the more you play, making an already (hopefully) satisfying competitive experience even meatier. Gears of War 3 is one of the year’s biggest games. Don’t miss out.

The Heroes VI adventure starts 400 years before the events in Heroes

V, showcasing a family of heroes in a thrilling, epic story where Angels plot to revive an unfinished war.

A legendary Archangel General, killed during the war of the Elder races, returns to life with a vengeance. Under the cover of preparations for an upcoming Demon invasion, he unites the peoples of Ashan to eradicate his ancient enemies.

MMH VI will be a prequel to Heroes V, taking place four hundred years before, and will drop about half of the previous game’s spells in favour of new, more innovative powers. The game will also drop the concept of the magic guild, instead allowing players to perform town updates through the chosen hero’s (only one this time) skill/ability wheel. Five factions will be present: Haven and Sanctuary are the good guys, Necropolis and Inferno are evil, and Stronghold will be a neutral faction.

The destiny of these Griffin heroes will be determined by the players.

That Destiny subtitle stands as more than just a cool word to accompany the

beloved X-Men moniker. As a new recruit having freshly joined the ranks of either the X-Men or the Brotherhood of Mutants, your every choice will determine your character’s destiny in a world divided by people’s fear of super-powered mutants.

The game takes place in San Francisco. Mutants and humans have been divided into separate areas due to incessant conflict between the groups. Beginning with a peace rally that’s being held in memory of the deceased leader of the X-Men, Professor X, players choose between one of three unique mutants, each one specifically created for this new game. As events unfold, you decide who your allies are, who you call enemy, and what choices you’ll make throughout your journey, each one affecting the outcome.

Destiny boasts a story written by Mike Carey, acclaimed writer of the X-Men: Legacy comic book series. Player choice will supposedly play a pivotal role in the game, promising a “rich, branching storyline.” As you play, your character gains powers based on those of established members of the X-Men universe. Expect to come across many coveted characters from this iconic franchise.

The Driver series is back! The uneven streets of San Francisco make for

the ultimate in high-speed thrills as we dive into a story that takes place a few months after the conclusion of Driv3r. Protagonist Tanner and his target Jericho both survived the shootout in Istanbul and when Jericho flees to San Fran, Tanner naturally sets off after him. In an unfortunate standoff with Jericho, Tanner ends up in a coma and thus begins the latest game in the series.

This is where things get weird. All of the action in this game takes place within Tanner’s comatose dreams. This allows for the awesomely strange Shift feature, a first for the series. It allows Tanner to “Shift” from car to car on the fly, allowing you to essentially take control of any vehicle you deem necessary. It’s not unlimited: you replenish your Shift Meter by performing daring feats like power slides, driving into oncoming traffic and big jumps. With a massive chunk of San Francisco being faithfully recreated in the game (complete with landmarks like the Bay Bridge), the introduction of Shift should make for some intense car chases.

With a new season of Formula One comes a new game dedicated

to the season. F1 2011 will feature all twelve teams from the real deal as well as each team’s two drivers. Split-screen multiplayer will make a welcome return so you can play with or against other players without the need for an Internet connection, but the game will also feature online multiplayer capabilities with support for up to 16 players. Additionally, 8 AI-controlled players can also be on the track at the same time to fully recreate the 24-vehicle races of real Formula 1. As well as simply winning the race, players in multiplayer will be given “objectives”, although we’re not yet sure what that will entail.

Including all of the changes made to the F1 2011 season including DRS, KERS, the new Pyrelli tyres and all the drivers, all 19 official tracks from the F1 2011 season will be present, including the currently unfinished new addition Buddh International Circuit in India. F1 2011 will also feature day/night transitions (with the artificial lighting to go along with night-time races), and there have been strong indications that the game will feature a safety car and yellow flag to caution drivers against dangerous driving conditions.

Gamers who have just jumped on board in this generation of games,

or who somehow missed out on the beginnings of the stealth game genre, will finally have a chance to catch up on the Metal Gear Solid series with this HD remake collection. The bundle will include Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and the previously PSP-exclusive Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which is the only PSP MGS both to be considered part of the series’ canon and to be directed by series creator Hideo Kojima. The best thing about this collection is that it’ll be available on both PS3 and Xbox 360, but unfortunately for 360 owners, they’ll still be without the game that started it all – Metal Gear Solid 1.

For those rock-subdwellers out there, Metal Gear Solid is a series of games that involve the use of stealth, subterfuge and gunplay. Players take on the role of a young rookie agent named Raiden in MGS2 and an ex CIA operative and Green Beret called Naked Snake / Big Boss in MGS3 and Peace Walker.

Seen by some as the spiritual successor to gun-tastic FPS Black

(which was released for the PS2 and original Xbox back in 2006), Bodycount hopes to tread similar ground to what EA’s Bulletstorm did earlier this year. Hoping to “put the fun back into the gun,” this shooter focuses on arcade-style action with a bit of score-attack gameplay thrown in for good measure.

There’ll no doubt be a lovely arsenal of diverse weaponry for players to utilise as they make their way through intense warzones, and if it’s anything like its predecessor (and all signs say it will be, because it’s developed by largely the same team), each weapon will pack a mighty punch. Destructible environments will crumble around you as bullets fly, with certain enemies happily smashing down cover to get closer to your face before they shoot it. Making matters even more explosive will be unlocks that you gain access to as you play, things like air strikes which will level any obstacles. A cover system which allows complete freedom of movement has been implemented in the game. Cooperative and competitive multiplayer will feature as well.

While other sports have enjoyed regular releases of videogames

dedicated to them, rugby seems to be left by the wayside more often than not. This year, things are quite the opposite, with two entirely independent (and fiercely competitive) Rugby Union games set for release.

Rugby Challenge is in development by New Zealand-based Sidhe, which has been credited with three previous Rugby League titles, and is being targeted at hardcore fans of the sport and newcomers alike. Those newcomers will have access to a wide variety of tutorial/training modes to both teach them the rules of the game and improve their playing skills (of the videogame, at least). Players will be able to play a variety of modes in single- or multiplayer form, the latter supporting up to 4v4 online play. Many licensed and unlicensed rugby competitions are available, including Tri Nations, ITM Cup, and Super Rugby. Although at this stage it looks like all South African teams will be unlicensed, Rugby challenge mkes upfor this with a very extensive game editor built in which enables the player to setup any game, team combination they can dream up

This is NHL 12, and it’s being developed in Canada, so you know they’re looking after your interests. The game will include an improved physics engine for players and puck control, better goalie interactions (i.e.: you can clobber them), and the ability to play the NHL Winter Classic event, as well as many other new features.

The newest title in the extremely popular Need for Speed series

promises a peek into the “underground world of illicit, high stakes racing.” The Run sees players caught up in a race for survival from San Francisco to New York, passing through locations like Denver, Las Vegas and Detroit along the way. You’ll battle notorious drivers on some of the world’s most dangerous roads, with the cops hot on your tail the entire time.

For the first time in the series, players spend some time on foot, sans vehicle. This mostly involves copious use of quick-time events and button prompts during cinematic sequences that see the main character, Jack, stretching his legs for a bit in dangerous situations (like rooftop chases and fights with the fuzz). The game is powered by DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, which is the same engine behind the incredible-looking Battlefield 3. Autolog, now seemingly a series staple, will once again take its place alongside you as you weave through traffic, barrel down icy mountain passes and blow across borders to complete The Run and preserve Jack’s life.

Forza 4 will be the first game in the series to support both Kinect and

regular controllers, and one of the first games to support both at the same time. The Kinect will be able to track head movements so that players can look into turns and see the apex coming up, and it will also recognise voice commands to start the race or navigate menus.

Other new gameplay features include a new physics model that lets advanced drivers wring the every last bit of performance out of every last car available. The Auto vista feature which enables you to walk around and admire the stunning lines of our favourite vehicle, lets you sit in the drivers seat and experience the rumble of the engine, or relax as you are taken on an audio tour of each car in the showroom.

The game also features ability to import a certain amount of credits and gifted vehicles from Forza 3.

Revelations is the direct sequel to 2010’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Players

take on the roles of Desmond Miles and his ancestors Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Desmond has fallen into a coma and the only way he can repair his shattered memories and return to consciousness is to use a back door in the Animus called the Black Room.

The game will feature improved combat and free-running abilities, as well as new weapons and Assassin’s Dens, which expand on the concept of Borgia Towers.

The long-running Ace Combat series will see a change in pace with Assault

Horizon, with a greater focus on close-range aerial combat and streamlined controls for those looking for a more arcade-like experience. The developers aim to put an end to the idea of “shooting faraway dots” by including Dogfight Mode for intense air-to-air skirmishes and Air Strike Mode for ground-based assaults, although both modes of play are entirely optional. Add to that a new control system called Optimum, which improves air handling and makes those barrel rolls less dangerous.

The Sims Medieval has enjoyed a decent amount of success, with fans

of the series warming to its charming setting and mixture of driven narrative and sandbox gameplay, and now it’s time for the thing that we all know and love about the long-running Sims series – an expansion! Pirates and Nobles will introduce loads of new content to the game: new quests, treasure hunting, and hundreds of new items for you to use in your medieval kingdom.

The story begins with the arrival of the Pirates of Aarbyville and the Nobles of Tredony to the kingdom. With a war between the two factions broken out, players can choose to be anyone from a king or queen to a lowly blacksmith, and they’ll be charged with new quests including finding the fountain of youth or saving the kingdom from an evil sorcerer. A new gameplay feature, treasure hunting, is sure to keep players busy as they take to the lands in search of buried riches, armed with shovels, maps, and the will to fight off all forms of danger on their epic adventure.

Batman: Arkham Asylum showed the world that comic-to-game

conversions are capable of trading blow-for-blow with the best AAA titles out there. The game incorporates stealth sequences with intense ranged and melee combat, and now Batman will take to the streets and skyline of Arkham City to deal with the Riddler, Two Face, Penguin and all of their minions, cunning puzzles and dangerous traps. Bats will also have access to a number of new weapons and gadgets, including a smoke bomb that can be used to confuse groups of enemies.

War in the North will see players take on the roles of one of three

distinct characters as they battle their way through hordes of savage orcs. Players will be able to choose between a human ranger, an elf mage and a dwarf warrior, but the entire game will be designed around a three-player co-op experience, whether the other two are controller by players or AI. Each character will have to play to their strengths and weaknesses and work together if they want to survive.

The fifth instalment in the epic, open-world fantasy role-playing

game series, Skyrim will give players more choices than ever before, more weapons, spells and conspiracies to unravel. looks set to be the most feature-packed title in the series yet. Characters in the game will now perform different moves based on their physical state, and will be able to counter-attack and interrupt moves even while in a downed state. Tweaks made to the fighter AI will help prevent players from repeating the same moves, and a new feature called Dynamic Comebacks will allow characters on the verge of losing to perform a combination of moves to earn two finishing moves.

Zombies in a sandbox, eating your brains! Dead Island is an open-

world take on the zombie apocalypse, dumping players on a tropical island as one of four characters struggling to survive while attempting to uncover the mystery behind the recent zombie outbreak on the island.

There’s a focus on melee combat, promising a ton of customisable weapons to go with the game’s RPG elements. Those RPG elements include unlocking new skills from a skill tree as your character gains experience points. You’ll encounter a variety of different zombie types, like the “Suicider” (a massive enemy covered in disgusting boils), the “Butcher” (a zombie missing both arms from the elbow, leaving them with only bones protruding – useful for slashing your face) and the “Ram” (a big dude wrapped in a straitjacket with a mask covering his mouth). Four-player cooperative play will feature, allowing each player to take advantage of their chosen survivor’s unique skill set. Vehicles will get you around the island of Banoi (a fictional island off the coast of Papua New Guinea), which can also be customised and used to mow down enemies.

The third instalment in one of the PS3’s most prolific first-person

shooters, Resistance 3 will see players take on the role of dishonourably discharged Sentinel Joseph Capelli, who, after years of retirement, is given the chance to deliver a decisive blow to the Chimeran menace that still terrorises the planet. Resistance 3 will focus on humanity’s survival, and the weapons will visually reflect that, and will also all be upgradable, gaining lethality the more you use them. Many old favourites will return, including the Bullseye, Magnum, Rossmore and Carbine, and a few new weapons will be available such as the Mutator, which deals damage over time, and the Dead Eye sniper rifle.

Multiplayer is also getting an overhaul, with a customisable and persistent progression system for online play, allowing players to unlock customised loadouts with various tactical and combat attributes. There will be five multiplayer game modes: DM, TDM, CTF and two unique modes called Chain Reaction and Breach. Splitscreen and online co-op play for the main campaign will make a return, although it’s been confirmed that it won’t be the same eight-player co-op as before.

unnoticed. The Syndicate, a legendary criminal fraternity with pawns in play all over the globe, has turned its eye on the Saints and demands tribute. Refusing to kneel to the Syndicate, you take the fight to a new city, playing out the most outlandish gameplay scenarios ever seen.

While the basic gameplay mechanics will remain the same as previous Saints row versions, the mission structure in SR3 will be changed to intertwine the missions of the three rival gangs in Steelport, with the outcomes of each mission affecting subsequent tasks and ultimately the game’s ending. A character level system will also be introduced, which features unlockable perks that grant special character traits.
