BTP BUSINESS COMMUNITY

BTP MOVERS AND SHAKERSEach quarter we welcome new businesses to join the BTP Community. This quarter we speak to Gavin Dickie, Managing Director of NewVoice Australia, a recent occupant of Brisbane Technology Park.

What does your company specialise in?

New Voice is a software company that was established in 1991 and supplies a product called MobiCall. MobiCall is a truly unified emergency control and response solution that utilises voice communications rather than just SMS, Paging or TEXT based messaging. MobiCall guarantees an outcome by automating delivery of critical events and alarms in real time voice, receiving real time acknowledgement, performing real time escalations, and instantaneously collaborating.

Do you have an existing relationship with a BTP occupant or do you see an opportunity for new relationships in the future?

Our model to market is with resellers and strategic partners. These partners are specialists in the ICT industry, such as Nexon Asia Pacific, an existing BTP occupant. We are looking for partners that provide ICT solutions into all types of industries as Mobicall offers value into any environment where alerts/alarms are generated.

What influenced your decision to make the move to the Brisbane Technology Park?

We recognised the need to settle into an environment of likeminded people with an opportunity to offer a complementary solution to all ICT companies wanting to add value to their existing offerings. We intend to develop a managed service and the existing infrastructure within Brisbane Technology Park was an important factor in selecting this location.

Homeboy, an Australian based start up and Brisbane Technology Park occupant, has released its world-first home security system in the US; making home security more affordable and accessible to the general public. Homeboy’s new product is the first wireless, long-life, Wi-Fi accessible security camera in the world and is the only home security system that enables owners to invite trusted friends and family to access their security system electronically.

The automatic motion detecting camera alerts the owner and their network instantly when motion is detected. Users are given the ability to view the video footage immediately and decide whether further action is needed. The mobile app has geo-location capability allowing the system to disarm or arm based on the owner leaving or arriving home, it also allows the system to go into pet mode.

The portable camera weighs 153 grams and is no larger than a tennis ball. It can be placed anywhere around the house as the magnetic base is capable of being mounted to walls and doors.

Mark Richards, co-founder of Homeboy said, “Home security is in desperate need of a refresh. Popular streaming and monitoring cameras are not home security systems, and the incumbent home security systems trusted by the generation before us are hopelessly antiquated and prohibitively expensive to the vast majority of renters and homeowners.

“Everyone deserves home security and the freedom to customize their system to match their lifestyle. We built Homeboy to be open and accessible to all from day one. Homeboy is home security for the rest of us.”

Already Homeboy has received very favourable reviews from CNET, HGTV, Gigaom and PC World. Although Homeboy is currently unavailable in Australia, you can find out more information on this innovative system, and plans for a local release at www.homeboy.com.

Anteo Technology Laboratory

How did the business begin and what were some hurdles or achievements you encountered along the way?

John Virk: After 21 years experience in the global finance industry, I decided to start my own business while managing the finance department of a large BRW listed company. Neeru Virk: I always liked the idea of a one stop shop for the business, so I enrolled in Griffith University to do a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in Accounting and Financial Planning. I finished the course in two years and four months. I was working at the same time and looking after my young daughter, so time management was a big hurdle.

What do you believe you bring to your company?

John: A clear vision and path to follow for all members of staff. We help people who work for us realise their potential; how to become a tree out of a seed. Neeru: Vision, leadership, dedication.

What do you attribute your success to?

John: My discipline backed by my knowledge and experience. Neeru: Investing in education and using that education to build a strong and resilient business. Our clients are not just sitting in the office of a normal accountant, finance broker, or financial planner. We offer a one stop shop with a team equipped with the skills to understand the unique needs of each client.

What advice do you have for others seeking success in your field?

John: Get support. Get the system to work for you rather than fighting the system. What is the first thing that women or men do? They start fighting. No: get the system to work for you. Neeru : If you want to do it, just do it. Life is too precious. We get one chance and there’s no looking back.

What does the future have in store for your business?

John: The expansion of our business with a key focus on profitability. Neeru: Growth: we’re very positive.

Resource management and geospatial experts, Fugro Geospatial have moved their Brisbane headquarters to 53 Brandl Street, citing significant growth and a successful acquisition as the reason for the move.

In 2014 Fugro acquired Roames Asset Services Pty Limited from Ergon Energy, renaming the business Fugro ROAMES.

Fugro Geospatial’s Business Line Manager for Pipelines and Transport, Mr. Matthew James explained, “The acquisition marks a new era for Fugro and in 2014 our presence in Queensland expanded dramatically. We have taken on an additional 70 staff, necessitating a move to larger premises with built-in capacity to accommodate our future growth,”

The organisation didn’t have to move far, relocating from their 650m2 premises at 7 Brandl Street to their new 1500m2 office at 53 Brandl Street.

As a long-term Brisbane Technology Park tenant, Mr. James said, “The park continues to meet the needs of the business through flexible rental options, incentives and proximity to transport networks and other facilities.”

The property was purchased by Benlee Stronghold Property Trust No.9 in late 2014 with refurbishment works commencing on the eight-year-old building in October. Fugro negotiated a five year lease for the entire second floor.

Mr. James said the refurbishment gave the company a chance to modernise their Brisbane headquarters. “It was an opportunity to start fresh and develop a premises that fit Fugro’s cultural needs. The objective was to create an open and workable office that encouraged creativity and communication between our employees. The business aims to continue to expand its global footprint of services to meet its client demands in Australia and the office at 53 Brandl Street will play a key part of the company’s growth plans.”

BTP CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Completed car park outside the BTP Conference Centre

Brett D’Arcy Senior Engineer at Spiderbox 8 Clunies Ross Court, Brisbane Technology Park

How do you get to work on a typical day? I catch two buses from New Farm. When the weather isn’t too hot I also bike to work, which takes me one and a half hours along the bikeway.

How does the location of Brisbane Technology Park benefit you? There is definitely good connectivity to the park. Before I lived in New Farm, I lived in Woolloongabba, where I would also catch the bus to BTP.

Why do you choose public transport? It is easier than driving, I find it more relaxing, and I can also get some work or reading done on the way to work.

What do you like best about working at Brisbane Technology Park? The Park has a really good atmosphere. There are really great facilities like the cafes – my lunch is always taken care of. I really like that within the new buildings, there is at least one shower facility, which is great for when I ride to work.

Juliet Toomer Operations Manager at Australian Building Inspection Services 1 Clunies Ross Court, Brisbane Technology Park

How do you get to work on a typical day? I drive to the office.

How does the location of Brisbane Technology Park benefit you? Relocating from Redcliffe and the ease of access in the Tech Park has cut one hour off my journey each way. This means my time can be better spent within the business. As I am on the road a lot the ease of access to all major roads in the new location has also meant a decrease in the kilometres required to achieve my results.

Is this new location more convenient? Our inspectors are based all around the greater Brisbane area and the new location has meant more frequent meetings and training can occur, as the central location means all staff can access the office easily.

What do you like best about working at Brisbane Technology Park? Location, amenities and the several cafes for meeting points.

The global energy business provides high quality fuels, lubricants and other oil products to millions of business and retail customers every day. Graystone Development Manager, Andrew Stevens said, “We are thrilled to be chosen as Puma Energy’s development partner for its bespoke facility. Puma’s choice of this location is a testament to Graystone’s construction and development expertise, which will be drawn on to deliver this new premises that will become part of the $70 million next stage at BTP Northshore Hamilton, and include a new childcare facility and multi-storey car park.” A time lapse camera has been positioned above the construction zone, which will capture each phase of the project.

The patent for sample pre-treatment marks a new era in laboratory testing and Anteo Technologies anticipates that the use of the methodology, which decreases or removes interference and contamination in test samples, will result in faster and more efficient testing and a reduction in medical costs. Rachel de las Heras, Head of Commercialisation at Anteo Technologies, said, “Currently pathology labs get a lot of tests that have to be re-tested in a different manner. The patent reduces both the need for repeat testing and the number of patient samples that don’t give an accurate read out because of naturally occurring interfering substances found within the human body. It is also scalable and has an easy manufacturing process.”
