2 Replacing BTS Parts

During site maintenance, you can replace BTS parts to meet the needs.

2.1 Replacing the BBU3900This topic describes how to replace the BBU3900. When the BBU3900 is faulty, replace it.

2.2 Replacing the Monitoring Transfer BoardThis describes how to replace a faulty monitoring transfer board.

2.3 Replacing the EMUAThis describes how to replace a faulty EMUA.

2.4 Replacing the Storage BatteriesThis describes how to replace an entire set of faulty storage batteries.

2.5 Replacing the DCDUThis describes how to replace the faulty DCDU.

2.6 Replacing the Heat ExchangerWhen the head exchanger on the door of the cabinet is faulty, you need to replace it. When thecontrol panel on the heat exchanger is faulty (other parts of the heat exchanger are not faultyand you need not replace the entire heat exchanger), replace the control panel.

2.12 Replacing the FANThis describes how to replace the faulty FAN. The FAN mentioned in this topic is the FAN ofthe carrier, rather than the FAN of the BBU.

2.13 Replacing the PDUThis section describes how to replace the PDU when the BTS3606CE PDU is faulty.

2.14 Replacing the Surge Protector of the Satellite Antenna SystemThis describes how to replace the faulty surge protector of the BTS satellite antenna system. Thesurge protector of the satellite antenna system provides surge protection for GPS clock signalsentering the BTS. If the faulty surge protector is replaced within a short period, GPS clock signalsare disrupted for a moment, but services of the BTS are not affected.

2.1 Replacing the BBU3900This topic describes how to replace the BBU3900. When the BBU3900 is faulty, replace it.

ContextNOTEAll the BBU3900 boards are hot-swappable.

2.1.1 Replacing a BBU3900 CaseA faulty BBU3900 case must be replaced with a new one. The BBU3900 processes basebandsignals of the BTS system, and provides a port for data communication between the BTS andthe BSC. All services of the BTS may be interrupted when the BBU3900 case is replaced.

2.1.2 Replacing a CMPTA CMPT is a main control and transmission unit of the BBU3900. It provides transmission ports,clock ports, and OM ports, and manages equipment. When only one CMPT is configured in theBBU3900, replacing the CMPT interrupts BTS services.

2.1.3 Replacing an HCPM or HECMAn HCPM or HECM processes baseband signals of the BTS system. Replacing the HCPM orHECM interrupts its services.

2.1.4 Replacing a UPEUA UPEU is the power module of the BBU3900. It supplies power to boards in the BBU3900.When only one UPEU is configured in the BBU3900, replacing the UPEU interrupts BTSservices.

2.1.5 Replacing a UTRPA UTRP transmits data between the BBU3900 and the BSC. Replacing the UTRP interrupts itstransmission services.

2.1.6 Replacing a UELP or UFLPA UELP or UFLP is the surge protection unit for BBU3900 trunk cables. It provides surgeprotection for E1/T1 and FE links. Replacing the board interrupts its transmission services.

2.1.7 Replacing a UEIUA UEIU is the environment interface unit. It transmits information about environmentmonitoring equipment and alarms to the CMPT. Replacing the UEIU does not affect BTSservices.

2.1.8 Replacing a UBRIA UBRI is a baseband radio interface unit. It implements the functions of PN sharing, 1Xresource pool, and convergence and distribution of baseband data.

2.1.9 Replacing a USCUA USCU is the extension satellite card clock unit of the BBU3900. It provides clock signalssuch as BITS, GPS, and RGPS clock signals. Replacing the USCU does not affect services.

2.1.13 Replacing an E1/T1 CableAn E1/T1 cable functions as the physical carrier of service exchanges between the BBU3900and the BSC. Replacing the E1/T1 cable interrupts services carried by the E1/T1 cable.

2.1.14 Replacing an E1/T1 Surge Protection Transfer CableAn E1/T1 surge protection transfer cable connects the CMPT or UTRP and the UELP. Itfunctions as the physical carrier of signal exchanges between the BBU3900 and the UELP.Replacing the E1/T1 surge protection transfer cable interrupts BTS transmission services.

2.1.19 Replacing a Clock Signal CableReplacing a clock signal cable affects BTS clock signals.

2.1.1 Replacing a BBU3900 CaseA faulty BBU3900 case must be replaced with a new one. The BBU3900 processes basebandsignals of the BTS system, and provides a port for data communication between the BTS andthe BSC. All services of the BTS may be interrupted when the BBU3900 case is replaced.

PrerequisiteThe following tools and materials are available: ESD wrist straps or ESD gloves, Phillipsscrewdriver, key to the cabinet door.

Procedure

Step 1 Record the carrier information.Run the DSP CBTSSECTORCARRIERINFO command to query the cell IDs, sector IDs, andcarrier IDs of the BTS. Then, record the IDs.

Step 2 Block carriers.1. Run the BLK RES command to block all carriers. Set Priority to Low.2. Run the DSP RES command to check whether all carriers are blocked. If they are blocked,

go to the next step.

2. If cables were connected to the faulty CMPT, label the cables before removing them.

3. Loosen the screws on the panel and remove the CMPT.

4. Place the faulty board in an ESD box or bag.

Step 4 Install a new board.

1. Take out a new CMPT. Confirm that the new CMPT is intact.

2. Install the new CMPT and tighten the screws on the panel.

3. If cables were disconnected from the faulty CMPT, connect those cables to the new CMPTaccording to the labels.

Step 5 Load board software.

l If automatic software loading is enabled, the system automatically loads CMPT softwarefrom the BAM after the CMPT is installed.

Step 6 Unblock carriers.

port on the cabinet.2. Set the switch on the UPEU to OFF.3. If cables are connected to the faulty UPEU, label the cables before removing them.4. Loosen the two captive screws on the UPEU and remove the UPEU.5. Place the faulty board in an ESD box or bag.

Step 2 Install a new UPEU.1. Take out a new UPEU. Confirm that the new UPEU is intact.2. Install the new UPEU and tighten two captive screws on the UPEU.3. If cables are connected to the faulty UPEU, connect the cables to the new UPEU according

to the labels.4. Set the switch on the UPEU to ON.

Step 3 Verify that the UPEU is running properly.

The UPEU is running properly if the RUN indicator is on.

ContextThe FAN dissipates heat from the BBU3900. The temperature inside the BBU3900 rises afterthe FAN is replaced, but BTS boards and services are not affected if the replacement is completedwithin 3 minutes.

ProcedureStep 1 Remove the faulty FAN.

1. Wear an ESD wrist strap and ESD gloves, and then insert the ground terminal into the ESDport on the cabinet.

2. Loosen the two captive screws on the FAN and remove the FAN.3. Place the faulty board in an ESD box or bag.

Step 2 Install a new FAN.1. Take out a new FAN. Confirm that the new FAN is intact.2. Install the new FAN and tighten two captive screws on the FAN.

Step 3 Verify that the FAN is running properly.

The FAN is running properly if the indicator is green and blinks at 0.5 Hz.

PrerequisiteThe following materials are available: electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap, ESD gloves,and ESD box or bag.

ContextThe swappable optical module is used for remote connection or cascading connection of RRUs.The swappable optical module is inserted into the SFP port on the HCPM or HECM. This enablesthe optical fiber to connect the HCPM or HECM and the RRU.

The swappable optical module is inserted into the FE1 port on the CMPT (4 E1/T1). This enablesthe FE optical fiber to connect the CMPT (4 E1/T1) and the BSC.

The procedure of replacing the swappable optical module connected to the SFP port on theHCPM or HECM is used as an example.

Procedure

Step 1 Mark the position where the swappable optical module is to be replaced.

Label the position before replacing the swappable optical module.

Step 2 Block carriers.

1. Run the BLK RES command to block all carriers of the RRU connected to the SFP port.Set Priority to Low.

2. Run the DSP RES command to check whether all carriers are blocked. If they are blocked,go to the next step.

Step 3 Remove the swappable optical module.

1. Remove the optical fiber from the optical module.

2. Install a protective cap to the optical fiber removed and label the optical fiber.

3. Remove the optical module.

Step 4 Install a new swappable optical module.

1. Take out a new swappable optical module. Ensure that it is intact and the model is the sameas that of the removed module.

2. Insert the new optical module into the SFP port.

3. Insert the optical fiber into the new optical module.

Step 5 Unblock carriers.

Run the UBL RES command to unblock all carriers of the RRU connected to the SFP port.

Step 6 Ensure that the new optical module works properly.

When the optical module is working properly, the status of the indicators on the port is as follows:

l RX: on

l TX: on

2.1.12 Replacing a Power CableA power cable connects the power port on the BBU3900 and the external power supply to feedthe external power supply into the BBU3900. You must power off the BBU3900 before replacingthe power cable.

PrerequisiteThe following tools and materials are available: ESD wrist strap, ESD gloves, Phillipsscrewdriver, and ESD box or bag.

Context

CAUTIONReplacing the power cable interrupts all BTS services.

Procedure

Step 1 Cut a new power cable as the same length as the faulty power cable.

Step 2 Set the BBU3900 power switch to OFF.

Step 3 Loosen the screws on the 3V3 power connector at the end of the power cable using a Phillipsscrewdriver, and then remove the 3V3 power connector from the BBU3900.

Step 4 Install the 3V3 power connector to the power port on the BBU3900, and then tighten the screwson the 3V3 power connector.

Step 5 Route the new power cable along the original path of the faulty power cable.

Step 6 Strip the sheath off the power cable for adding OT terminals.

Step 7 Disconnect the faulty power cable and add OT terminals to the new power cable.

Step 8 Set the BBU3900 power switch to ON.

2.6 Replacing the Heat ExchangerWhen the head exchanger on the door of the cabinet is faulty, you need to replace it. When thecontrol panel on the heat exchanger is faulty (other parts of the heat exchanger are not faultyand you need not replace the entire heat exchanger), replace the control panel.

2.14 Replacing the Surge Protector of the Satellite AntennaSystem

This describes how to replace the faulty surge protector of the BTS satellite antenna system. Thesurge protector of the satellite antenna system provides surge protection for GPS clock signalsentering the BTS. If the faulty surge protector is replaced within a short period, GPS clock signalsare disrupted for a moment, but services of the BTS are not affected.

PrerequisiteThe following tools and materials are available: the ESD wrist strap or gloves, Phillipsscrewdriver, adjustable wrench, and the ESD box or bag.

ContextThe surge protector can effectively discharge the ultra-high voltage and current in the GPSfeeders caused by lightning.

If any faulty surge protector is replaced within a short period, the GPS clock signals of the BTSare interrupted, but the services of the BTS are not interrupted.

Procedure

Step 1 Remove the faulty surge protector.1. Label the cables that are connected to the ports of the surge protector, and then remove the

cables.2. Unscrew the surge protector and then remove it.3. Place the removed surge protector in an ESD box/bag.

Step 2 Install a new surge protector.1. Take the new surge protector out of the ESD box. Ensure that the new surge protector is

not damaged and that the types of the new and the removed surge protectors are the same.2. Install the new surge protector in the position where the faulty surge protector is located.3. According to the labels, insert the cables into the ports of the new surge protector.

Step 3 Ensure that the new surge protector functions properly.

Check whether the new surge protector functions properly through the following methods:

l Run the DSP CBTSBRDSPECSTAT command to check whether more than four satellitesare locked.

l Alarms related to the satellite block are not generated on the Alarm Management System.

Procedurel BTS3606CE

1. Switch on the power supply.

2. Set all MCBs of the PDB to ON.

3. Set the switch on the UPEU panel of the BBU to ON.

4. Check the indicators of boards and modules.

When the boards and modules are normal after power-on, the status of indicators isas follows:

– UPEU panel of the BBU: the indicator (green)is ON

– FAN panel of the BBU: the indicator (green) is blinking

– Boards inside the BBU: the RUN indicator (green) is blinking

– FAN panel: the indicator (green) is blinking

– STDM and SPAM panels: the RUN indicator (green) is blinking

l BTS3606AC

1. Switch on the power supply.

2. Set the MCB of the PSU of the AC PDB AC/DC to ON.

The normal status of the indicators of the panel of the PSU AC/DC is:

– The RUN indicator is ON

– The monitoring indicator is OFF.

– The alarm indicator is OFF.3. Set the MCBs controlling the BBU and the STDM/SPAM in the DC PDB to ON.4. Set the switch on the UPEU panel of the BBU to ON.5. Check the indicators of boards and modules.

3.1.2 Powering Off the BTSThis describes two power-off modes of the BTS, that is, regular power-off and emergency power-off.

Context

You can use the two power-off methods on the BTS based on the site situations.

l Regular power-offIt is applied to some specific situations, for example BTS movement and predicted power-off.

l Emergency power-offIt is applied to some emergency situations, for example the impact caused by fire, smoke,and water.

Procedurel Regular power-off of the BTS3606CE -48 V

1. Set the switch on the UPEU panel of the BBU to OFF.2. Set the MCBs controlling BBU and STDM/SPAM in DC PDB to OFF.3. Switch off the power supply from the power system to the BTS.

l Regular power-off of the BTS3606CE +24V1. Set the switch on the UPEU panel of the BBU to OFF.2. Set the MCBs controlling BBU and STDM/SPAM in DC PDB to OFF.3. Switch off the power supply from the power system to the BTS.
