NEEDSASSESSMENT:

OverallDesiredOutcome

Teachersparticipatinginworkshopsorcourseswilllearn,andputintorealworldclassroomapplication,numerousresearchedbasedpracticesthataddressthefundamentalaspectsofteachingandlearning.Teacherswilllearnprovenpracticesforeffectiveclassroomandgroupmanagement,maximaluseoflearningtime,questioningandfeedbackskills,interactiveguidedinstructionstrategiesandscaffoldingtechniques.Withthisknowledgeandinformation,teacherswillbecomeeffectiveintheirfundamentalpracticecontributingtopositivestudentgrowthandachievement.

MonitoringPiece

BTUwillconductthefollowingactivitiestoprovideongoingsupportandmonitortheeffectivenessofeachofourEffectiveTeachingcoursesandworkshops.Activitieswillbedeliveredthroughthefollowingformats:expertpresentations,casestudies,simulations,listeningactivities,paneldiscussions,roleplaying,specialprojects,Socraticseminars,productcreations,cooperativelearning,roleplaying,homeworkandclassroom“todo’s”andsharedreflections.

Teacherswillparticipateinface-to-facetrainingsalignedtoobjectivesspecifictothatsessionoutcome.

Teacherswillberesponsibleforcompletingandturninginhomeworkassignmentsand/orfinalreflectionsdocumentingtheeffectivenessofassignment.

Teacherswillbeprovidedwithextrasupportandmentoringthroughphonecalls,technology,additionalface-tofacemeetings,andpeermentoringifavailable.

OnlineresourceswillbeavailableontheBTU/AFTwebsite.

Effectiveness

BTUwillconductthefollowingtotrackandevaluatetheeffectivenessofactivitiesandtheirimpactonmasteringdesiredoutcomes.

Teacherswillindicateanddocumentareasofneedtheywishtoseeimprovementintheareasofeffectiveclassroommanagementand/orfoundationalteachingpractices.

Teacherswillprovidea“baseline”ofinformationalignedtotheidentifiedareasofneed.Teacherswillindicatearealisticgoalthatcanbeworkedtowardsduringthecourse.

Teacherswillbegiven6weeksfromthefinalsessiontopracticenewlylearnedcontentandstrategieswithintheirownclassroomsand/orworksites. TeacherswillindicatetheoutcomesoftheirgoalsinthecoursereflectionscompletedandturnedintoBTUProfessionalDevelopmentDept.

Teacherswillbegintheprocesstolearnandpracticethefundamentalaspectsofteachingandlearningthatarerelevantforteachersandclassroomparaprofessionalsinallgradelevelsandsubjectareas.Teacherswillexamineprovenpracticesforeffectiveclassroommanagementandgroupmanagement,maximaluseoflearningtime,questioningandfeedbackskills,homework,interactiveguidedinstructionstrategiesandscaffoldingtechniques.

ObjectivesbyCourseTopics-

1.1BeginningoftheYearClassroomManagement-Bytheendofthesessionteacherswillbeabletorecognizeandputintopracticestrategiestoorganizeandestablishaneffectiveclassroommanagementsystemthatinfluenceswhatstudentsaccomplishthroughouttherestoftheschoolyear.Keypracticesinclude:arrangingthephysicalenvironmenttosupportinstruction,introducingrulesandprocedures,monitoringstudentbehaviorandapplyingconsequencesconsistently,andplanningasuccessfulfirstdayofschool.

1.2EffectiveGroupManagement-Bytheendofthesessionteacherswillbeabletoestablishclassroomconditionsthatwillhelppreventordiscouragebehaviorproblemsbeforetheyoccur.Teacherswillthatbydesigninginstructionthatactivelyinvolvesallstudents,holdsstudentsaccountablefortheirwork,andprovidesstudentsforavarietyandasenseofprogress,teachersmaximizestudentinvolvement.

1.3InteractiveDirectInstruction-Bytheendofthesessionteacherswillbeabletorecognizeandputintopracticevariousstrategiesthatstressteacher-directedlearningwithhighlevelsofteacherstudentinteraction.Teacherswilltheimportanceofleadinginitialstudentpracticeandprovidingimmediateacademicfeedback,especiallywhenteachingskillsandstructuredlearningtasks.Teacherswilllearnthattasksrequiringhigh-orderthinkingskills,effectiveteachersprovidescaffolds,whichhelpstudents,learnnecessarycognitivestrategies.Inaddition,teacherswilllearnthateffectivequestioning;pacinglessonappropriatelyandensuringahighsuccessrateforstudentsareimportantpartsofgoodinstruction.

1.4TeacherPraise–Bytheendofthesessionteacherswillbeabletodistinguishbetweenfeedback,positivereinforcementandteacherpraise.Teacherswilllearnhowineffectivepraisecanresultindetrimentalresultsforstudents.Teacherswillmakedistinctionsbetweenpraiseandfeedbackandwilllearntheeffectiveuseofpraise.

1.5UsingHomeworkEffectively-Bytheendofthesessionteacherswilllearnhowtousehomeworktoextendlearningtime,fosterfamilyinvolvement,andcontributetostudentachievement.Teacherswillexaminetherelationshipbetweenhomeworkandstudentlearning,thevariouspurposesofhomeworkandtheoutcomesforstudents,typesofassignments,characteristicsofeffectivehomeworkandtheimportanceoftimelyfeedback.

1.6TimeonTask–Bytheendofthesessionteacherswillbeabletodistinguishbetweenthequantityoftimeforlearningversusthequalityoflearningtime.Teacherswilllearneffectiveclassroommanagementstrategiestomaximizethequantityoftimeforlearning.Inaddition,teachers

willlearnthatdesigninglearningtasksattheappropriatelevelofdifficulty,withscaffoldingasneeded,arethekeytostudentlearning.

Teacherswilllearnresearch-basedstrategiestoreduceand/orpreventtheoccurrenceofdisruptiveordangerousbehavior.Teacherswilllearnhowtheantisocialactionsofasmall,butpowerful,numberofstudentsinschoolnotonlyputtheirownacademicsuccessatriskbutalsothreatenthelearningenvironmentforeveryone.Teacherswilllearnresearchonemotionalandbehavioralproblemsofstudentswhoconsistentlyactout.

Objectives

Bytheendofthecourse/sessionteacherswillbeableto:

2 Identify,understandandbeginusingthethree-tieredmodelforthepreventionofbehaviorproblems.

2.1 Thefirstlevel,PrimaryPrevention,focusesoncreatingstructuredenvironmentswhereallstudents know what is expected of them and what the consequences are for appropriate andinappropriatebehavior.

2.2 The second level, Secondary Prevention, focuses on providing small group interventionssuchascounseling,socialskillsinstructionorpeermediationtothegroupofstudentsforwhomprimarypreventionhasnotbeeneffectiveinpreventinginappropriatebehaviors.

2.3 The third level,TertiaryPreventionactivities, are reserved for studentswhoaremost inneed.Thesestudentsrequireschoolandcommunityservicesoralternativeplacementprogramsinvolvingthenandtheirfamiliestoprovidethesupportnecessarytopreventtheexacerbationoftheirbehaviorproblems.
