THE BIG

FIVE

Week 3 is already upon us and there’s loads going on in the world of student activities in the next couple of weeks. You can’t possibly have missed the start of One World Week, which is running until the end of Week 3 and celebrates the diversity of all of the cultures represented here on campus. With four different facets (Arts, Festival, Forum and Sports), there is some- thing for everyone to get stuck into. We’ve also got three student productions coming up - Belleville Rendezvous from Freshblood Theatre, The Importance of Being Earnest Honest, the Singapore Society’s first theatrical production, and Warwick’s annual dance show, Pizazz.

Looking further ahead we’ve also got performances from MTW, CSSA and BrassSoc in Week 5 and then the Economics Summit to look forward to in Week 6!

With so much going on, there’s no excuse for not getting involved, so go and check out what your fellow students are up to!

Don’t forget, it’s never too late to join any of the SU societies.

5 days, 5 themes, 5 prizes all in Week 5!Help us improve your Union for you by answering questions on 5 different themes (one each day), plus win some amazing prizes!

Be in the Atrium every day of Week 5 and help shape the future of your SU!

get invovedwarwick inspireThe 2010 Warwick Inspire scheme is now up and running. In conjunction with Teach First, Warwick SU is planning an access bus for students to visit a variety of mixed comprehensive schools in the West Midlands. Our students will talk about their life as a student at Warwick, and engage with the pupils about their perceptions of the university experience. We hope that these sessions will provide a ‘human’ dimension to the opportunities associated with higher education.

Benefits for yourself include CV boost, skills development, and the chance to give something back to the community.

hidden course costs week You all know that costs at University are unavoidable, but there are some that come out of the blue. These are things like textbooks, printing costs and compulsory trips. Week 4 is the start of the Union’s campaign to raise awareness about this issue among students and the University. Email your stories to [email protected] and make sure you fill in the questionnaire on the Union website. Get involved!

black is the new purpleLooking for help in the Library? Then look out for the Library Advisors - they’ll be wearing black polo shirts instead of the old purple ones.

They can help you with all sorts of Library-related issues including use of the catalogue, finding books and journals, help with the scanners and

photocopiers, who the best person is to help you with more specific enquires, and loads more. You’ll see them walking around the Library with their T-shirts on, so go and ask them a question!

The scheme was a massive success in 2009, and the deadline for applications is Tuesday 2nd February 2010 (Tuesday Week 4).

For more information and to download an application form, visit www.warwicksu.com/inspire and e-mail it to [email protected]. For any enquiries e-mail Sumaiya, Education Officer, at [email protected].

elections

Term 2 wouldn’t be Term 2 without the Officer Elections in Week 7. For those new to Warwick this year, Elections Week is when campus gets snowed under with publicity from some of next year’s Sabbatical hopefuls and you get your chance to elect your representatives for the following year. Something that always gets overshadowed is the vital work done by some of the Union’s Part-Time Officers - students who have a role within the Union while studying for their degree.

There are nearly 30 roles available, covering a wide range of Union activities. There are also 7 officers who are solely responsible for the various campaigns the Union runs. Remember Pride Week in Term 1, or Go Green Week at the start of this term? These were both brilliant campaigns run by our LGBUTA+ Campaigns Officer and our Environment Campaigns Officer respectively. Our remaining Campaigns team includes Anti-Racism, Ethics and Social Justice, Women’s, Ethnic Minorities and Students with Disabilities.

There are another 7 officers who represent your academic views to your respective Faculties. We have 3 officers who make your voices heard to the highest bodies of the University hierarchy, too (University Council and University Senate). University Representatives do a lot of work on making sure your concerns about your course are listened to and acted upon by the various University bodies and committees.

The majority of these roles will be elected at the same time as next year’s Sabbatical Officers, so if you’re interested in gaining a role within the Students’ Union next year and getting some invaluable experience, take a look at the following timeline:

If you have an opinion on anything about the Copper Rooms, from event build-up and music to drinks, décor and getting home afterwards, this is the best place to share.

Alternatively, we also have an online forum on The Copper Rooms webpage!

question time

question time: the union outletsThe Sabbatical team have been living on campus non-stop since the first weeks of July, aside from 10 days off at Christmas. They have spent hours carefully sampling the different offerings at the outlets and, over time, found a particular love for one…

alexThe Bread Oven - I bloody love the Bread Oven, Hoi Sin Duck and Cucumber on freshly baked brown bread is seriously tasty. If you get it while it’s warm, it’s amazing. Why

spend elsewhere when such a lovely meal awaits for a fraction of the price!

andrewThe Terrace Bar - if you like the character Goldmember in Austin Powers (‘I love goooold’), you’ll love The Terrace Bar. Decked out with a stunning balcony overhanging the piazza, this is the place to have a cocktail and watch the world go by!

King Edward’s - nothing says lunch more then a jacket potato - it’s all you need and then some. So many options to choose from, relatively healthy and, not to forget, cheap!

samiCuriositea - this is just the perfect outlet. Delicious teas, lovely snacks and nice cosy décor. I’m going to spend the next few months attempting not spend all my time in there getting caffeine highs…

The Dirty Duck - after a hard day’s work, there’s no better place to chill out. The amount of money I end up spending in there shows that I love it far too much!

isaacThe Atrium - it’s not quite an outlet, but it allows people to meet together and it’s the people that make the place. You can go grab a spud starter, hot sandwich as a main and finish it off with a

cocktail from The Terrace Bar. Basically, the Atrium allows for the best of ALL worlds.

Xananas - Caribbean chicken and carrot cake. Need I say more? I could also add the lovely sound of sizzling fajitas coming out of the kitchen nice and fresh.
