CHILDHOOD MEMORIES THEME OF MOTHER-DAUGHTER BQT The BCUMC annual Mother-Daughter banquet this year took place on
Thursday, May 12, 2016. The fun evening was organized by Retta Whiteaker,
Pat Sense, Trudy Germain and Michele Rauch. Thank you so much!
Tables were decorated sweetly with Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, and
other childhood toys. (Thanks for the loan of the dolls, Retta!) Each lady
found a lollipop with their place setting. Another childhood reminder!
Eighty seven signed up to attend, and it was a large flock who enjoyed the
salad buffet. Be it tossed salad, 3 bean salad, taco salad, broccoli salad… they
were all delicious. Dessert was served by our waiters, with sherbet plated
beautifully with two Mexican wedding cakes.
The first part of our entertainment was a skit performed by Michele Roach
(and husband Fred as the voice of God). Michele discusses with God all the
hurts she has written down in several books over the years. When God tells
her to forgive and forget and let the past go, Michele asks: “What? These are
the memories that shaped my life!” God tells her, “my list could be pretty
long if I chose to keep one.” She answers “I guess it’s only fair, afterall, You
forgave me and threw away my list.” Michele throws away all her books
except one. Then God says, “Michele, ALL of them!” She picks up the big
book and we see on the side it says FRED (her real life hubby)! This brought
much laughter and applause!
Next up we were entertained by the musical talents of “Travelin’ Light”
(Doug & Elaine Latia). As they went through their set, we also got a little
lesson in music history. Doug quizzed the crowd after each song, asking who
sang it, and when it was recorded/released. We’re using Doug’s quiz here so
you can share in that evening. Travelin’ Light ended the evening with “On the
5
Road Again” (their theme song). Here is the set. Answer with who sang each
song, and the year. (answers on page 21)
1. Rollin’ on the River 2. Only You 3. Folsom Prison 4. All My Lovin’
5. Under the Boardwalk 6. Sittin’ on the Dock of the
Bay
7. Silver Wings
Many thanks to the men who helped this evening: Bill Miller, Fred Roach,
Logan Schumacher, Taylor Sims, Sam Stratton, Don Kidd, Derek Dewitt, and
Malcolm Miller. Thanks also to Bob Shepard for running sound. Thank you
also to Meijer and Texas Roadhouse for their contributions.

GETTING TO KNOW CCN (CANCER CARE NETWORK) The Buck Creek Ladies Missionary Society (LMS) made a new friend
when Administrative Director for CCN (Cancer Care Network), Telisa
Clevenger-Smith came to speak at our May meeting.
CCN’s mission is to support non-medical needs of area cancer patients in
collaboration with care providers and other community resources.
There are many who are not aware of CCN. It was started in 2007 by a
group of Lafayette physicians, to help their cancer patients minimize day to
day stresses of getting basic needs met. Services are free: client advocacy,
durable medical equipment (wheel chairs, walkers, etc.); fuel cards; limited
financial assistance (pre-qualify); transportation to/from cancer treatment.
CCN provides assistance in eleven Indiana counties (Benton, Carroll, Cass,
Clinton, Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Tippecanoe, Warren and
White). You do not have to be referred, as they serve anyone in cancer
treatment in the 11 counties. Another area is helping with food. CCN has a
pantry of donated groceries, paper goods, and basic cleaning supplies. They
stock shelf stable foods for simple and easy to prepare meals and keep the food
10
in date. Some food items needed are: pudding/Jell-o cups; peanut butter; jelly;
instant oatmeal packets; individual cups of cereal; poptarts; hamburger helper;
macaroni & cheese cups; soup; cans of tuna and chicken; and canned
vegetables. Donations of Ensure and Boost are also appreciated.
Other items: Paper products such as 4 count toilet paper (easier to lift), and
Depends; liquid hand soap; dish soap; deodorant; toothbrushes, toothpaste;
laundry detergent (preferred in smaller easy-to-lift containers).
CCN is developing a volunteer base in the community for plumbers and
other handymen, to help when repairs are needed in the patient’s home. If
CCN can’t do it, they will find somebody who can.
A wig salon at CNN in an intimate setting, provides a wide selection of
wigs, scarves and hats.
Telisa says, “we do whatever we can do to help them help themselves.”
The BCUMC Sew & Sews have donated scarves and other items they have
made to CCN for the past few years, and Telisa thanked those Sew & Sews
who were also part of Ladies Missionary. The ladies brought several items
this evening for the CCN pantry, and those were presented to Telisa.
If you wish to donate items to CCN, please place them in the large wooden
cabinet in the church dining area. CCN is located at 3900 McCarty Lane,
Lafayette, Indiana. If you wish to be added to their volunteer list, their phone
is 765-446-5464.
CCN is called CARE for a reason: they CARE very, very much!

ANIMAL FARM READING: ***** (five stars) The stage reading of the fable
“Animal Farm” at BCUMC the
weekend of April 22-24,was
delightful. It had been more years
than I’d care to remember, since
reading Animal Farm in high
school. I looked forward to seeing
it again, the live version, not just
reading it myself, but being read to.
As Director Ralph Rohrer said, “A
stage reading is reading a story to
you, like a parent to children.
Visualize the action in your mind,
close your eyes, and listen… but
don’t fall asleep!”
All the Chancel Players were
excellent, each with their own
special talent: animal noises,
accents, facial expressions, singing,
movements… Talent was
abundant in front of us as we
watched and listened. The
audience was riveted! The piano
accompaniment by Peg Black was
perfection. Thanks to Bob Shepard
for running sound and projector.
I didn’t recall the ending to the
story. So, at intermission, waiting
on the conclusion while others
dined on punch and cookies in the
fellowship hall, I racked my brain
searching for the tale’s end. It was
very thought provoking when the
ending was revealed to us by this
talented group. I won’t reveal the
ending, you’ll have to read the
book!
Players left to right in the photo: Kathleen Coffee, Kevin Doer (yes he was
a local news anchor), Nathan Bechtold, Bonnie Shoaf (former pastor at
BCUMC), Tim Fox, Ralph Rohrer (BCUMC’s own), and Thea Strand. Thank
you all for a very entertaining adventure!
12
A free-will offering dinner was held on the evening of April 23 before the
performance, and it was well attended. Retta Whiteaker’s table decorations
were so creative! Funds raised may be used to buy items for the church
kitchen.
A THANK YOU To the good people of Buck Creek United Methodist Church,
Thank you, thank you, and thank you. Thank you for permitting Chancel
Players to present the stage reading of Animal Farm in your sanctuary on April
22, 23, and 24.
Thank you for helping to publicize the show by distributing posters and
spreading the word.
Thank you for partnering with the show to organize and prepare a delicious
dinner on Saturday. Special thanks to Jane Arnold and all the women who
were culinary stars that night.
Thank you for attending the show. You helped create a wonderful and
appreciative audience that brought out the best efforts of the cast.
Chancel Players of Lafayette had a delightful time at Buck Creek.
Sincerely,
-Ralph Rohrer
President, Chancel Players of Lafayette

MEMORY GARDEN & THE 3 CROSSES UPGRADE PLAN Plans are underway to refresh the Memory Garden and replace the three
crosses (planted around 1991) which have suffered damage from Mother
Nature.
Thanks to all those who stayed after first service on May
15 to discuss future plans for the memory garden and
Crosses. There were lots of ideas thrown in and we will be
using several of them. Most everyone agreed we need a plan
that requires little if any maintenance. That being said, it
was decided to have a mound covered with rubber mulch
around the crosses in the center of the memory garden. The new crosses will
be made from treated lumber and this fall we will plant spring flower bulbs in
the mound. We are also planning on having lighting on the crosses at night.
The rest of the area will be cement. We plan to use old shingles covered with
gravel under the handicap ramp and to add lattice to the inside side of the
handicap ramp. The cement will have a lip around the mound to help keep the
mulch and dirt in the mound. The cement will be on a slight slope to
encourage water drainage away from the Church. Jake Uerkwitz will be
laying out the plans for the mound and cement work and getting us an
estimate. Once Jake has some estimates and a plan we will meet again.
Later on there will be a sign-up sheet to donate Spring flower bulbs for
the garden (daffodils, narcissus, jonquil, tulip, hyacinth…).

FIVE QUESTIONS! This month our first interview is with Richard Knight of our local pizza place,
“The Creek”.
1. The corner building has been the
home to many businesses in the past.
What led to the creation of “The
Creek”?
My partner/fiance is owner of the
building these past 4 years.
Unfortunately those previous businesses
were unable to sustain themselves. After
the last person couldn't even get the
place open, even after paying a deposit
and first months rent. It was then that we
decided that we better open a restaurant ourselves...that way we would at least
know that the rent would be paid each month. LOL
On a side note: Pam and I are both life long restaurateurs and were kinda
excited at the prospect of re-establishing a decades old tradition in Buck
Creek. We have pictures of people eating in this location since the early
1940's! Generously provided by the local town historian Peggy Eckhart. (not
sure of the spelling!)
We have a weekly customer, Alberta Huffman who graduated in 1944 from
Buck Creek High School! She vividly remembers eating in our place as early
as 1941 with her dad and grandpa.
Pam came up with the idea of 'The Creek' name and its decor from a story her
dad told her on the origin of the towns name. He told her that he had been told
that waaaay back when the area had been a place for miners or 'panners'. It was
said that at the very least, each day you could at least make a 'buck' panning in
the creek! Hence the name...buck creek.
2. How many employees (names) do you have and what are their duties?
Currently we have 10 employees...they have all requested I not use their
names...they tend to be a bit shy! lol 2 of our employees actually live in town
and the rest in the surrounding area.
3. Concerning the menu items, what do The Creek’s employees think is
the most popular item on the menu, and also the most unique?
19
Concerning the employees...their favorites are the breadsticks and the BBQ
Chicken Pizza. Concerning the most popular items based on customer tastes
are: Farmers Delight Pizza and then the BBQ Chicken Pizza. Our Breadsticks
are by far our most popular Lure (appetizer) followed by the Bobbers. Bobbers
are an Italian Meatball and mozzarella cheese wrapped in our breadstick
dough and then baked to perfection. Smothered in our garlic butter and then
we flavor it with our 'fairy dust' (parmesan cheese and special spices!!)
4. What geographical areas does The Creek deliver to?
We deliver to Edna Mills down 26 to I-65...up from Edna Mills thru Pyrmont,
Owasco, Ockley, Radnor and up to Delphi. Down thru Battleground all the
way out to State Road 43. We also cover down 25 to US 52 and Schuyler
Avenue. Its really a pretty big area.
We deliver throughout all of Lafayette to businesses. We have brought some
very large orders to SIA...Wabash...Kirby Risk and many others.
5. We are so glad to have a food venue in Buck Creek again. What do you
like most about running a business in the Buck Creek community?
What appeals to us is the ability to be part of the fabric of a community. Its
businesses such as our that truly give to the community. Go to any Baseball
Field in the summer time and look at the Sponsors banners...its always the
individual, local business. Not McDonalds...not the national chains...its guys
like us!
I also love being able to get to know our customers as friends...to be able to
watch their kids grow up and become adults.
Lastly...As I said earlier, Pam and I have been doing this a very long time. I
made my first pizza in 1977! Pizza has always been my first love.
Regards,
Richard Knight
Pam Wentworth

FIVE QUESTIONS! Our second interview this month is with Beverly Reed (right in photo), and
how she found her way to Buck Creek UMC through her good friend and
neighbor Mary Ellen Davidson (left in photo). Let’s find out the story…
1. Where were you born and raised, and attend school?
I was born in Lafayette and lived here all my life except I started first grade in
Buck Creek till 3rd grade then came back to Lafayette and attended Tippecanoe
elementary and Jefferson High School.
2. How did you and Mary Ellen become friends?
When Mary Ellen and her hubby moved in FH (Friendship House) in 2011 we
bonded immediately ad she welcome me into her family of wonderful people
and a wonderful church family.
3. We enjoy having you worship with us at BCUMC. What is your
favorite part of church?
I can’t pick a favorite part, I love it all: the fellowship, the music and the
powerful preaching.
4. If you could be any person in the Bible for a week, who would you be
and why?
Ruth, because of her dedication to the Lord and her Mother-in-law.
5. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
The best gift I ever received is not a material gift, it’s the gift of Jesus
becoming my Lord and Savior.

OUR HOOSIER FLAG HISTORY The Indiana state flag was once known as Indiana’s banner. It was adopted
by the General Assembly on May 31, 1917. As part of Indiana’s centennial
celebration, a flag design contest was held. Paul Hadley of Mooresville,
Indiana won with his design.
Every fourth grader should know these facts: that the torch in the middle
stands for liberty and enlightenment. The rays represent their far reaching
influence. There are 19 stars on the flag. The outer circle of 13 stars represent
the original thirteen states. The inner semi-circle of five stars stand for the
next five states admitted to the Union. The large star, the nineteenth, is for
Indiana, as we are the 19th state.
One thing was added to Hadley’s design by the General Assembly, the
word INDIANA over the top of the torch.
