THE ORCHID JUDGES ARE MOVING For decades the Mid-Atlantic Judging Center has met the third Wednesday of every month, from 6 – 10 pm, at Hor-ticultural Hall in Fairmount Park. All this will change in October. Instead of meeting Wednesday evenings, we’ll meet the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10 am – 3 pm. Our new venue will be All Saints’ (Episcopal) Church, 1325 Montgomery Avenue, Wynnewood, PA 19096. For those of you with long memories, yes, this is the church where SEPOS met for many years several decades ago. The reasons for the move are clear. Our purpose is to ser-vice and encourage participation by members of the local community who live within a 100 mile radius around Philadelphia. Our meeting time on Wednesday evenings was negatively affected by rush-hour traffic that discour-aged many exhibitors and observers. And we want more time at our monthly meetings for training and education that would be a plus for any attendees. Our new format will be determined by the most advanta-geous use of the time between Judging and Training. We will open for plant registration at 10:00 am. Judging will start at 10:30 am. We are suggesting an informal bring-your-own lunch break at 12:30 pm. Our meetings are al-ways open to exhibitors and guests and we encourage comments, questions and participation from all. We will devote afternoons to formal presentations by our students and judges. We hope that the new venue and meeting time will en-courage members of the orchid community to join us. Our judges look forward to seeing at judging many of the spectacular plants we see on show tables. Please plan to join us Saturday, October 12 at All Saints’ Church, Wynnewood, PA.

Every Phalaenopsis enthusiast knows Peter Lin, an avid hobbyist and hybridizer, owner of Big Leaf Orchids in

North Texas.

Peter started growing orchids over 30 years ago, enhancing his Phalaenopsis

growing hobby by creating new hybrids. Big Leaf Orchids, formed in 1996,

now houses over 5000 species and hybrids. He’s been the recipient of a mul-

titude of American Orchid Society awards to his Phalaenopsis.

As a result of his annual trip to Taiwan to see some of the newest results in

Phalaenopsis breeding, he hand-selects many of the most up-to-the minute

varieties to incorporate into his hybridizing program. He specializes in

Phalaenopsis for their long-lasting flowers, diverse sizes, brilliant colors, pat-

terns and fragrance. A recipient of numerous AOS awards, he says his inter-

est in Phalaenopsis is the artistry of breeding by maintaining the finest in his

selection of Phalaenopsis. He’s always looking to take his breeding to the

next level, to create something better and different to breed on with, to offer to his clients and to share with the

orchid world at large.

Peter has also served the IPA as our Newsletter Editor, has written numerous Phalaenopsis articles for several

orchid publications and has been a featured Guest Speaker at orchid societies, at the IPA Symposiums and at

the annual Taiwan International Orchid Show. Although his focus is on Phalaenopsis, he also grows Cattleyas,

Vandaceous and Paphiopedilums.

Peter will be sharing with us the newest in cutting-edge directions in breeding for Novelty Phalaenopsis and

will be bringing select plants from his collection for sale.
