It’s a great pleasure to introduce the Bucks autumn 2013 Activities Week.

Activities Week will, we hope and expect, become a regular feature in the University year. Developed after listening to students and staff about what would be a valuable addition to our academic programmes, it’s a great example of collaboration between the University Careers and Employability Team, the Students’ Union, and academic departments.

Activities Week is designed to provide an exciting range of opportunities for you, including taster sessions, trips, guest speakers, debates, conferences, sports and social activities. All these and more will be running during the week, providing lots of opportunities to have some fun, meet new people, develop your employability and enterprise skills, network with prospective employers, and try something new.

I hope you will attend as many sessions as you can, and chose a few which are outside your normal preferences too – this is a great time to find out whether something unexpected is a pathway you want to pursue in future.

We hope at the end of the week you will have seen Bucks New University from a different angle, made some new friends, learnt some new skills and perhaps have a fresh perspective to your future career and what you need to do in order to make it a reality.

Afterwards, tell us how it went, what you liked and what would have improved the experience for you. We will build on your feedback to make this week a traditional part of the Bucks year, and part of what makes Bucks graduates special.

Thanks for looking at this amazing programme - the more you read the more you’ll want it to be Activities Week now; and even better, 99 per cent of events listed are completely free!

The University are making sure there are plenty of sessions going on during Activities Week so that you can make the most of your time here at Bucks. As a result of higher fees for university students, Bucks New University, with help from the Students’ Union, wants to ensure you get value for your money. Activities Week, which takes place from 18 - 22 November, has been designed with this in mind.

Activities Week will have course specific, employability and additional skills sessions, recreational activities, certified courses, sports & societies showcases and give-it-a-go sports sessions. In this programme you will find a timetable for each day, a brief description of what each session is and a blank timetable on the back page for you to plan your week filling in the activities that you want to attend. There are also some instructions on how to book onto each event in the very useful FAQs; please bear in mind that some sessions are limited in availability so book quickly!

And don’t forget: nearly all the events and sessions are free thanks to The Big Deal so be sure to make the most of them.

My ones to watch are: • the Enterprise Charity Challenge, which will be running all week • New Secularism III including guest speaker Mike Clare founder of Dreams • the assessment centre session that is being run by Enterprise Rent-A-Car • the global food market • boxercise • the Jobs, Careers & Volunteers Fair• and a great chance to hear from entrepreneur Amber Atherton from the TV programme, Made in

Chelsea.

Activities Week really is going to be a great time so stick around.

Reach For success - Womans’ conferenceWed 20 Nov, 2.30pm-5pm, Arts4every1

Amber’s passion for building brands began at the age of nine, when she set up a website selling books and CDs - receiving her first cheque in the post for a ‘No Doubt’ album the day before her 10th birthday.

A self-proclaimed tech kid, Amber said: “I would spend my weekend making Flash animations or writing code!” Amber’s pre-teen years saw her dabble in everything from starting an e-cards website, cuddly toy companies, a trucker hat label, personalised apparel business and a teen magazine, until age 16 MYFLASHTRASH was born out of the amateur import export business she was running out of her dorm at boarding school.

In 2010 Amber began to study at London College of Fashion for a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion Management. Continuing to develop MYFLASHTRASH.COM alongside her studies, it was a year later that Venture Capital Firms started to become interested in the brand and its community of loyal fans including The Duchess of Cambridge, Rita Ora and Kelly Brook.

A recognised name in the fashion and tech scene, Amber regularly speaks at conferences and schools on enterprise, social branding and marketing.

When is Activities Week?Monday 18 November to Friday 22 November.

What is Activities Week?A week of interactive, engaging and fun activities supporting students’ employability and enterprise, providing something extra alongside the planned academic programme, combining subject specific and cross-University opportunities, plus a full programme of social activities. We hope this ambitious event becomes a valuable addition to the Bucks offer – please help make it so with your support.

Why are we having Activities Week?Bucks is strongly committed to developing students’ employability and enterprise, and this week offers a chance for out-of-the-ordinary activities for courses, departments, schools, and across the whole University. The programme has been developed so far through consultation with students and staff.

How do i book a ticket for an event?Visit bucksstudentsunion.org. Once you have logged in either click on the news article about Activities Week or click n ‘what’s on’ and then use the drop down menu to select ‘Activities Week’ and then select the event you want to book a ticket for. Click on the ticket symbol and then check out and follow the process through.

How do i log into the bucksstudentsunion.org website?Go to bucksstudentsunion.org and click login in the top right corner and then register. A new page will load where you can create your own login but you must have a valid e-mail address that you can view in order to complete the login process.

Why do i need to put in a credit card?Although none of the events for Activities Week require payments some of the events that we do at other times require a fee so a credit card is needed. Your card details will not be shared with anyone.

the session i want to book has no tickets left - what should i do?Look at the programme for similar coloured sessions and see if any of those take your fancy. Then contact [email protected] to find out if there are any other similar sessions that are going on throughout the year.

Why aren’t there any course specific sessions for my course?Ask your tutor and they should be able to tell you what they are running during Activities Week.

there are two sessions that i want to attend both going on at the same time - how can i do both?Look at the rest of the timetable as some sessions are on multiple times throughout the week. If both sessions are only on once book a ticket for one of the sessions and contact [email protected] letting us know which two sessions you are interested in as there may be other sessions that have been planned since the programme was printed.

i have a lecture at the same time as one of the sessions i want to attend - what should i do?Some sessions are on multiple times throughout the week. If that is the only session contact [email protected] letting us know which session you are interested in as there may be more sessions that have been planned since the programme was printed. Speak to your lecturer about the clash but in the end you should go to your lecture.

Why is there no session on that interests me?There are lots of sessions that you could try but if there is nothing that you want to do, make a suggestion to [email protected]. We are always looking for more session ideas and we have another Activities Week in March that we are planning at the moment.

i’ve booked a ticket for a session but i now can’t go what should i do?Contact [email protected] and we will sort it out for you.
