The Bakony-Balaton Tourism Region is an area rich in natural and cultural sights as well as traditions and bordered by the towns of Tapolca and Sümeg to the west, the town of Várpalota to the east, the village of Somlószőlős and the town of Zirc to the north, the town of Balatonkenese to the south-east and the settlements of the Valley of Arts to the south-west. We can be justly proud of our outstanding national heritage, i.e. the viticulture of the Balaton wine-growing region. Welcome to the region with Hungary’s most diversified heritage!

Blessed Nature

The Balaton Uplands wine-growing region and some of the vineyards of the Great Somló wine region belong directly to the Bakony-Balaton Tourism Region. Both wine regions are characterized by the cultivation of 2000-year-old viticultural traditions dating back to Roman times. Due to the mountains providing shelter against the wind as well as the light-reflecting and heat-radiating effect of the surface of Lake Balaton, the majority of the local vineyards have a Mediterranean-like climate. The wines of this region are elegant, full of aromas and have a discreet scent. The warmth of the day makes them full-bodied, while the cool wind descending from the mountains at night makes them retain a fine acid structure and develop a fruity character.


The Wine of Somló Has a Soul…

…and a legend, too. Somló is Hungary’s smallest historic wine region. In addition to the climate, the heat-absorbing characteristic of the volcanic soil is another factor that is beneficial to the ripening of grapes. Wine varieties typical of this area: Olaszrizling, Juhfark, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Tramini. As part of the Somló Wine Tour, a number of wine-cellars are open to visitors. Besides tasting wine, travellers can make themselves familiar with the various methods and committed masters of viticulture and wine-making, as well as the pleasures of being a guest in an area where cordial hospitality has a long tradition.


Authentic Flavours

Not only through its viniculture and viticulture does the Bakony-Balaton Region contribute to the reputation of Hungarian gastronomy. Almost all meat, fish and game dishes have a variety prepared ‘Bakony style’: this means a typical world of flavours and adding mushroom to the dish. The forests of the Bakony Hills provides us with game, Lake Balaton with a choice of fresh fish, while local farmers with delicious vegetables, fruits and artisan delicacies. Our life is sweetened by excellent quality honey produced in this area and goodies made from it.

In the Bakony-Balaton Region, every effort is made to ensure in the spirit of traditions that cultural meeting points are also places of great entertainment. In the town of Sümeg, which is considered to be the gate of the Balaton Uplands wine region, for example, people are committed to make viniculture and the local wine culture, which were pushed in the background earlier, prosper again. Following a period of inactivity of several hundred years, grape is grown again on the slopes of the hill, on which the famous Castle of Sümeg stands, while wine lovers can take part in a historic and gastronomic time travel at traditional events with the powerful help of local growers.

You can come here by car, train or coach, however, the most exciting way to explore the Bakony-Balaton Region is on foot or by bicycle, in an easy-going manner, since this is the paradise of travellers who like looking around and look for the joys of life.
