Niagara Falls native Adam Clendening was part of NHL history on the blueline when the Columbus Bluejackets eliminated the NHL’s top team the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night in Colmbus, Ohio. The Jackets swept Tampa 4-0 in the opening round, the first time the NHL Pres-idents Trophy winners were ever eliminated without ever winning a game. Clendening had start-ed the season on the blue-line for Columbus but af-ter four games he ended up spending rest of the season with Cleveland in the American Hockey League. He had an excel-lent season in the AHL playing 45 games and leading the team with 33 assists, a plus 18 and 98 penalty minutes. But Sunday night he was on the third defen-sive pairing as the Jack-ets beat the Lightning 3-1 and again Tuesday for their history making 7-3 win. Clendening has played 90 regular season NHL games with seven dif-ferent team; Chicago, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, New York Rangers, Arizona, and Columbus along with 375 AHL games. Clendening also helped the Cleveland Monsters get into the AHL playoffs this week. Columbus star defen-

seman Set Jones had high praise for Clen-dening after Sunday’s game, “I thought Clen-ner played unbelievable tonight. He got pucks to the net, played physical in the D zone. He was a big part of it tonight for us, played some very good minutes for us. I thought he stepped in and did awesome.” Former Sabres Rob-in Lehner was front and center as his New York Islanders surprised the three time Stanley Cup Pittsburgh Penguins with another four game sweep. Lehner surre-nered only six goals in four games against the likes of Sydney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel. The NHL playoffs are

a showcase of the leagues best teams and they have demonstrated a fast paced physical two way style of play which is cer-tainly foreign to our lo-cal NHL team. The Blue Jackets and Islanders have shown that a ded-ication to defense and a team first mentality can produce success. The Sa-bres are so far far away from this caliber of play that it’s hard to fathom how they will ever be able to compete at that level. Local players Hay-ley Scamurra and Emily Pfalzer won Gold medals in a controversial game at the IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in Espoo Finland. An ap-parent goal for Finland in overtime by Petra Niemi-nen was disallowed for goalie interference after a lengthy 14 minute video review. The players had to pick up their equip-ment and resume the game. Fans who chanted “Suomi!” and waved blue and white flags through-out the game and erupted into jubilation after the apparent winning goal rained boos down on the Americans when they were given their medals.

Having been born at the tail end of the de-pression and growing up during the war besides being one of eight chil-dren, an allowance was unheard of. You scratched for any income you could. Shoveling walks, standing by the super market with a wagon hoping to help some elderly lady bring her groceries home for a dime. Dime would get you a coke at Sweetland’s with the boys. Got my first steady job deliver-ing the Courier Express, Buffalo’s morning daily and Sunday paper at 12 years old. Had to arise at 5 am every morning 7 days a week, but it gave income and even able to help at home. When the West Side gangs tried to give me “protection” for a certain amount of mon-ey. I wanted no part of it. Worked too hard to give them anything. Tough times. Did that till I was

41 Chevy. First car. Nicknamed it “Chickmobile”

Believe It Or Not

Rabbit foot. Lucky Charm?

15 then got my first job with a paycheck working on the Ferry boat that went back and forth across the Niagara river to Can-ada. Made $1 an hour, Big money back then and it was a good summer. However, when I re-turned to school in the Fall, found myself des-perate for revenue again. Could not wait till I was 16 to quit school and get a job. I had the taste of hav-ing money. It was ok with my Mom as it meant add-ed income to the house-hold, so I left in my junior year. Worked for Reming-ton Rand at the same rate, a dollar an hour. Worked till I got a job at the gas company reading meters. Also worked nights at a chrome plating factory. Terrible job and danger-ous. They would never al-low those working condi-tions now. Chemicals and minor explosions. Enough to give you burns but not

life threatening. Working the two jobs I was able to save enough to buy a car. $700 for a 1941 black Chevy sedan. When I was young someone gave me a rabbit’s foot for luck. Car-ried it around for years and it was the first thing to go on the key chain of my new car. Wanted all the good luck I can get. Strange good luck symbol as it was not good luck for the rabbit. Added a small horseshoe with a four-leaf clover in the middle of it. All good luck charms and you believed if you want-ed that they work. Back then we had all kinds of beliefs and suspicions. Don’t walk under a ladder or have a black cat walk in front of you, that was bad luck. If you broke a mirror it was seven years bad luck but who kept tract. If your palm itched, you were going to come into money. If your nose itched, you were going to kiss a fool. If you were telling a lie you crossed your fingers and it was ok, or it could be making a wish. Like wishing on the first star or first Robin in Spring or ending with the top half of the wishbone in a chicken meant your wish would come true. Where did these all

come from? 13 is an un-lucky number. Friday the 13th and a full moon is bad. Some buildings do not have a 13th floor. Goes from 12 to 14. Imagine be-lieving so strongly that you skip a floor. Don’t step in the cracks on the side-walks. If you are walking with a friend or relative do no let an object make you split, both go on one side or the other. St Christo-pher protects our cars; St Anthony helps us find lost objects. Let us not forget St Joseph who helps sell our houses. Found him buried in the yard at the last house we bought. To really stretch our beliefs how about an older gentleman with a white beard in a red suit com-ing down your chimney to bring you gifts. In a sled with reindeer that can fly. Standing under the mistletoe meant you were going to be kissed. Even better a rabbit brings you candy at Easter and hides eggs. Like I said we believe what we want to believe. The good or the bad. I want to believe

that my good luck charms have worked. I have had a good life, a good wife, but I am still trying to make a buck. Do you have a birthday greeting you would like to see here? Birthdays, anniversaries, interest-ing pictures, short stories or even a 500 word col-umn of interest to your neighbors. Send them to me and I will see what I can do. Nothing political or controversial. Send to [email protected].

We have all played cards with playing cards at one time or another. How closely have you looked at the cards them-selves. Here are some simple questions about a deck of cards. See if you can answer without pulling out the deck. There are different designs but these seem most common.

Dear Rusty: We are a little confused about husband and wife Social Security benefits. I am 63 years old (born 1955) and still employed full-time. My wife turns 60 this month. She is retired mil-itary and has been work-ing in the civilian sector for a number of years now. She has always earned more than me. We are confused as to how Social Security payments between us will work. I know I will start to collect before she does. Can you help with an explanation? Signed: Confused Dear Confused: So-cial Security benefits for married couples can, in-deed, be confusing, es-pecially if you both still work. If your wife has always been the high-er-earner, you could pos-sibly be entitled to a spousal benefit from her record, but only if your own benefit amount at your full retirement age (FRA) is less than 50% of your wife’s benefit amount at her FRA. Since you say you will claim Social Security be-fore your higher-earning wife, any spousal benefit you may be entitled to will not take effect until your wife starts her bene-fits. To be clear, a spousal benefit is only due if that amount is more than you are entitled to on your own work record; other-wise you only get your own benefit. If a spousal benefit is due, what es-sentially happens is that you get your own Social Security benefit plus a “spousal boost” to bring you up to what you are entitled to as a spouse. The spousal benefit can be 50% of the higher earn-er’s FRA benefit amount (if that is more than your own) but you only get the full 50% if it starts at your full retirement age; otherwise it is less than 50%. That’s because any time any Social Security benefit is taken earlier than your FRA it is actu-arially reduced according to the number of months before your FRA that it is taken. If you (or your wife) collect Social Security

before you have reached your full retirement age and you continue to work, you will be subject to an annual earnings limit ($17,640 for 2019) which, if exceeded, will cause SS to withhold benefits equal to $1 for every $2 you are over the limit. Since they don’t withhold partial benefits, that could mean some months without benefits. That is true up to the year you reach your full retirement age when the earnings limit goes up by more than 2.5 times and the penalty is less ($1 for every $3 over the lim-it). Then, once you reach your full retirement age, there is no longer a limit to how much you can earn while collecting benefits. And for clarity, if you have benefits withheld because you exceed the earnings limit, you’ll get time cred-it for those months when you reach your full re-tirement age, which will somewhat increase your benefit amount at your FRA. So, your plans for working and earning

should be considered in deciding when both of you should claim your SS ben-efits. To summarize, if you have both earned at least 40 SS credits, you are both entitled to your own Social Security benefit. If half of your wife’s SS benefit at her full retire-ment age is more than your own benefit at your full retirement age, you’ll also get a spousal boost equal to the difference. But if either of you claim benefits early they will be reduced, and if your spou-sal benefit starts before your FRA it will also be reduced. And don’t forget, working before you reach your full retirement age will subject you to Social Security’s annual earn-ings limit.
