Tour of NIPSTA
Have you ever wondered how firemen, police, and other first respondersobtain the training and skills to help those in need? Well, your ExecutiveDirector got a chance to see one of the nation's premier public safety trainingcenters: NIPSTA. NIPSTA stands for the Northern Illinois Public SafetyTraining Academy. First responders from all fields train there to develop theability to fight fires, rescue people from collapsed buildings, manage activeshooter situations, and save the lives of those who have sustained seriousinjuries. NIPSTA has created curriculum and simulations that help theirtrainees encounter real situations and respond under pressure.
NIPSTA also helps theseprofessionals develop teamwork andtrust, skills that are essential for notonly first responders, but alsobusinesses. In fact, NIPSTA offerstraining in team building and decisionmaking to business and non-profitorganizations.

________________________________________________ Membership Meeting October 4th This month's Chamber Membership Meeting was of high value to those whoattended. Our guest speaker was Marissa Samaan of US Bank/Elavon. Marissadiscussed the current trends in electronic payment processing. Businesses havebeen mandated to begin accepting credit cards with embedded chips. Marissaexplained the history behind these cards and how they help reduce point ofsale fraud. She also discussed the reasons why not all retail establishments areaccepting these cards even if they have card readers. Attendees learned aboutthe various back office support systems for these cards and the issues withimplementing those systems. It was a highly engaging presentation on a topicthat touches all businesses. Also at the Membership Meeting was Bridget Fitzgerald of the IllinoisTreasurer's Office. Bridget helps businesses and individuals discover whetherthey have funds or property owed to them as part of the ICash program. Manyattendees asked Bridget to search the state database to see if they were owedmoney. And most of those who asked, including me, found that they are owedmoney by someone. The best success story of the day came from Mary Anne atDavid Weekley Homes who recovered $300 in unclaimed money! Bridget andher team will be at several upcoming Chamber events, so be sure to ask themto search for you.
