Getting Started: Your AccountSet your Notifications

Here you and your students can set notifications preferences. Notifications are customizable at the user level, so what, when, and how students receive notifications on items is a function of how they have set their notification preferences.

Notifications are sent as one of four delivery types: send right away, daily summary, weekly summary, or don't send. If you change a setting, the change is made immediately to your account.

Getting Started: Uploading FilesAdd your materials to your Canvas module

There are a number of ways to upload text, audio and other multimedia materials to Canvas. You can store these in the Files area. File space is however limited in Canvas itself (500MB). So it is highly recommended that you use My Data Box, Kingston University's cloud storage system which is integrated into Canvas making things very easy to insert.

Option 1: Adding a limited number of materials via Files:

1. Once you have accessed your Module via the Dashboard, select Files from the sidebar

2. Select Upload to add a selection of media. Note: there will be a range of pre-populated items in here already linked to the editable templates you will use to build your module. Do not delete any of these pages. If redundant, just leave unpublished as you might need them again.

RecommendedOption 2: Adding a limited number of materials via Box:

To access your account go to kingston.box.com and select 'Continue' under the 'Part of Kingston University?' heading.

Once logged-in, you can upload any materials relevant for your Canvas module, directly to the cloud.

Box is connected to Canvas so you can further upload materials on Box directly to Canvas. This will be demonstrated later on in this step-by-step guide 14

Syllabus Syllabus communicates the module’s aims, the learning outcomes and expectations. Syllabus is in the Module Descriptor.

Topics Topics are the different aspects of the module content that are grouped together to organise and control the flow of the module. Topics will enable the students to structure their understanding of the module syllabus. Topics can be developed from the Aims and Learning Outcomes of the module.

Units Units are containers of activities. Activities are segments of learning that are typically built with a set of instructions of how to engage with resources.

Activities Activities are segments of learning that are typically built with a set of instructions to communicate how to engage with resources. Activities are structured to absorb new information, practice a new skill, or interact with a group to solve a problem. Activities might be, for example, reading an article, watching a video, reflecting on a field trip, taking part in discussions or attempting a quiz.

The difference between Activities and Resources An activity has a narrative that justifies how, when and why students can engage with the given resource. An activity provides students with opportunities to deepen their learning by applying concepts and articulating new knowledge. Activities can provide the instructor feedback about the students’ learning. A link to a resource without a narrative is less meaningful to the student and can be confusing.
