Admiral’s MessageI am happy for this opportunity to thank each of you for your part in making 2011 a significant year in the life of Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation and Vinson Hall Retirement Community. You will see from this report that there is much to celebrate. Your support and partnership are key factors in our blueprint for success.

The past year was one of important transition for our organization. Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation Board of Trustees and the Vinson Hall Corporation Board of Directors merged into one board to carry on the mission of the Foundation and Corporation. It has been very exciting to work with the Board Members in 2011 as they eagerly embraced a culture of accountability and dedicated themselves to serve and provide leadership to this organization. Not only did they take on a merger, but they have also led us through a year of financial, architectural, and environmental planning to expand our community as well as to create wounded warrior transitional housing. We would not be successful without the astute guidance from our Board of Trustees.

For me, it is truly a privilege to be a member of this community. We have a wonderful team of staff who are grounded, practical and never afraid to roll up their sleeves to offer the best person-centered care and service

to our residents. Our culture arises from the values we hold dear. We provide a comfortable environment fostering dignity, friendship and security. Each and every day our staff members portray the values of commitment, compassion, integrity, respect, service and trust. These core values are what we stand for, what we believe to be the most important in serving our residents and what we will never compromise upon. Our values determine our character and represent the sum total of the individuals at Vinson Hall Retirement Community.

As I look around this vibrant community which possesses a beautiful spirit of home and family and provides a wonderful quality of living, I realize that much has been made possible due to the generosity of past gifts. Because of the contributions of many individuals including you, we have been able to gradually enhance life at Vinson Hall Retirement Community by offering resident assistance, new programs and supporting technology. I was very grateful for the increase in giving in 2011 and I am very hopeful for an even greater increase in 2012 in order to support our wounded warrior project and needed technology, such as an Electronic Health Record System.

On behalf of our entire Community, I thank you for our continuous support, partnership and belief in our mission and vision. Together, we will be able to create a future of senior living and wounded warrior support. I hope to be able to count on you for your long and lasting generosity. You are our strength!

Best regards,

It Takes a Team

Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation 5

Sometimes we all wonder about the purpose of our life. What is the reason for our being? But for the staff of Vinson Hall Retirement Community that reason is crystal clear. It is a calling for them, a passion to serve every day; they thrive on the difference they make in the lives of the seniors they serve!

It’s not easy to take care of the elderly, especially when they are sick and their bodies are fragile. It certainly can be very stressful at times and difficult, but to our staff, care giving comes naturally. It is not unusual to receive such emails and letters from our resident’s family members…here is one of the many.

“I am writing to commend Salimatu for saving my mother’s life on February 14th. She called me in the morning describing my mother’s condition and recommending she go to the hospital, to which I agreed. My mother was seen at Arlington Hospital and was sent home early in the afternoon. The ER PA told me she was fine, just dehydrated. Then Salimatu called me again that evening to tell me she came to deliver Mom's meds as a special dispensation for her having been in the hospital that morning, and found her bleeding. I was reluctant to have my mom go back to the hospital, but Salimatu held firm that she did not look well and that the amount of blood was too much. So 911 was called again. Salimatu then called me another time when the paramedics arrived as my Mother did not want to go and she wanted me to convince my mother to go. My mother did go back and was treated for a bleeding ulcer in her duodenum, a completely new condition. Her hematocrit had dropped to 18% from 28% earlier in the day. If my mom had not gone back to the hospital that night my mother likely would have bled to death during the night. My mother's life was saved due to Salimatu's cool, informed and decisive actions for which my family is eternally grateful. Salimatu deserves to be recognized for her actions.”

Marie our nurse tried to assist a resident in our assisted living residence, Arleigh Burke Pavilion. Sometimes residents refuse help even though they need it. Marie insisted that she accept her help. After a great deal of reluctance, the resident finally allowed Marie to assist her, which took almost an hour to complete. After the task was completed the resident was feeling so good she said I want to say thank you, but I don’t have to. After all her hard work Marie smiled at her sweetly, and said “you are right you don’t have to, I do it because I love to make you feel better.”

Passion in Providing for Residents

Kim in activities brings so much life and exuberance to her job. She engages the residents and the staff in such a way that it seems you’re with your family having a good time. From bowling to bingo, or the impromptu birthday parties on the patio, with all the residents wearing sunglasses, she brings so much joy to our residents at The Sylvestery.

Willie and Stacie, our drivers, routinely help residents with groceries even helping store them. Edgar in dining remembers the residents’ preferences and takes care to ensure that they are taken care of. While they and many others take care of the residents directly every day, an equal number are content to work quietly behind the scenes, towards the same corporate goal of person centered care and service, be it staff or residents.

We are privileged as Clayton M. Christensen, Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School says, “In the end our life is not measured by the wealth we accumulate, or the prominence we achieve, but by the number of lives we have touched on our way.”

Volunteers are the life blood of not-for-profit organizations and that is so very true for us. Without volunteers, we might not be dead in the water, but certainly we would not be steaming at full speed ahead. We depend upon the gift of time from so many individuals. Here are just a few examples of our volunteers and the work that they do for us:

Students, both children and young adults, have a way of walking in and lifting our spirits, making us all feel young again. Our student volunteers from Chesterbrook Elementary, Georgetown Day School, Longfellow Middle School, the Montessori School of McLean, George C. Marshall High School, Langley High School, McLean High School, Yorktown High School, and George Washington University are very talented. They work in various capacities throughout the community from life enrichment activities such as arts, crafts, and one to one engagements including technology assistance and secretarial support. In addition, these young volunteers perform a myriad of tasks and errands for both residents and staff members. Students with special needs gain valuable work experience in various departments (Maintenance, Concierge, Treasure Shop, etc.), which assists them in securing future positions in the work force. Our student volunteers are a true treasure.

Vinson Hall Retirement Community is the perfect place for group service projects, which include improving landscaping and grounds, organizing socials for residents, leading small group activities, as well as hosting intergenerational debates. Students from the afterschool program at Chesterbrook Elementary made blankets and pillows for Arleigh Burke Pavilion residents during the Christmas season. The Montessori School of McLean students are active pen pals with some of our residents. In addition, student groups provide beautiful performances throughout the year, entertaining the residents with song, dance, musical arrangements, and other special presentations. Working professionals not only put in many long hours in their chosen professions, but somehow find time in their day to give to us. Our Board of Trustees is a perfect example of “volunteerism.” They not only attend Board and Committee meetings, but find the time to assist in planning major events, such as the Gala, Golf Tournament and 5K Run with the Warriors. They deserve many accolades for their support. We also have many younger veterans who volunteer at Vinson Hall. Some work with residents who are in the process of editing memoirs or writing accounts of their time in uniform. Veteran volunteers also provide great support with special events and fundraising efforts. We are delighted to have several professors who share their expertise by leading educational activities, such as Italian class in Independent Living and memory workshops at The Sylvestery.

To all of our volunteers, we say “Bravo Zulu! Your gift to us is priceless.”

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by

what we give.”-Winston Churchill

Special Events For many years, Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation has hosted two signature events in order to raise money for the residents and programs at Vinson Hall Retirement Community. Traditionally, our Golf Classic in the spring and our Annual Gala and Silent Auction in the fall have generated revenue for our Residents’ Assistance Fund. In 2011, we sponsored a new event, the Run with the Warriors 5K and the contributions from all three events have been dedicated to launching our Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing Project. All proceeds were designated to fund the entry fees, renovation and furnishing of one or more apartments in Vinson Hall.

18th Annual Gala & Silent AuctionFriday, November 18, 2011Chair – VADM John G. Cotton, USN (Ret)

On the same day he was confirmed as the 37th Surgeon General of the United States Navy, Vice Admiral Matthew L. Nathan, SHCE, USN was honored on behalf of wounded warriors and those who care for them at our 18th Annual Gala & Silent Auction. Prior to his confirmation as Surgeon General, VADM Nathan served as Commander, National Naval Medical Center, where he led and guided the rehabilitation of our nation’s wounded warriors. Upon arrival, guests were escorted to our Penthouse Lounge by The George Washington University NROTC to enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while perusing the fantastic collection of silent auction items donated by local merchants and community members, and assembled by our Silent Auction Committee including Mrs. Joan Hart, Mrs. Meredith Hinkle and Mrs. Kathi Smith. Following dinner our Gala Chairman, Vice Admiral John G. Cotton, USN (Ret), welcomed guests and the Navy Ceremonial Honor Guard presented the colors. Before our honoree, VADM Nathan made his remarks, Midshipman Ye Hu serenaded guests with a lovely rendition of the National Anthem. The evening closed with a live auction featuring a sailing adventure on Dennis Conner’s famous America’s Cup yacht “Stars & Stripes,” an exciting VIP Churchill Downs racing event, and a luxurious Napa Valley wine and spa escape. The festive event was a great success, with more than 160 guests in attendance who helped raise more than $76,000.

Run with the Warriors 5KSaturday, September 24, 2011Chair – RADM Frederic G. Sanford, MC, USN (Ret)

What started as an idea to host a picnic for wounded warriors on the grounds of Vinson Hall Retirement Community quickly transformed and then blossomed into a successful 5k race through partnerships with The George Washington University (GWU), The Mission Continues, Western Golf Properties, The DiMattina Group, and BB&T. Despite dreary early morning weather, nearly 250 runners comprised of 35 wounded warriors, service members, retired military, and ROTC participants and other community members ran in support of the Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing Project. More than 50 volunteers from Vinson Hall Retirement Community, Chesterbrook Elementary School, GWU and The Mission Continues ensured the day’s events went smoothly. Following the run, the United States Army Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps gave a compelling performance before remarks were made by Lieutenant General Willie J. Williams, USMC, Director, Marine Corps staff and Amy Cohen, Executive Director of GWU’s Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service. Awards were presented by Lt.Gen Willie J. Williams, Virginia Senator Janet Howell and Sergeant Benjamin Thomas, a wounded warrior. In its first year the run netted nearly $20,000.

25th Annual Golf ClassicTuesday, May 10, 2011Chair - RADM H. W. (Pat) Dawson, Jr., SC, USNR (Ret)

Held at Reston National Golf Course in Reston, VA our 25th Annual Golf Classic was by all measures a success! Wounded active duty servicemen and women from Operation Homefront Village; Fisher House Foundation, Inc.; Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund; and Walter Reed Army Medical Center were invited to participate in the tournament, at no cost to them, as our way of saying thank you for the service they provided to our country. In the end, eight wounded warriors joined 112 individual golfers on the greens, and a total of more than $46,000 was raised.

Growing for Future Generations

relationships with the local community and corporate organizations.

The majority of our Expansion Reservation Depositors are within a ten-mile radius of Vinson Hall, and many continue to be active members in the community. With emphasis on being at the forefront of technology and community outreach, we have opened the door to development opportunities through our Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing Project, enhanced resident programming, partnerships with businesses, churches, and local government/municipalities. Achieving our Vision has become the Mission.

Through the corridors of Vinson Hall Retirement Community, the buzz words for 2011 were “Expansion Project.” It’s not hard to see why: our local community is aging in place, Independent Living census at Vinson Hall is at record levels, and there is a need for enhanced resident amenities in order to stay competitive with other senior communities in the area. Our Expansion Project , which includes 75 upscale Independent Living apartments, a community center featuring a new bistro and other resident services, an expanded parking garage, and connecting corridors to each of the buildings, has been the talk of the town since unveiling the master site plan and marketing initiatives. To promote the new Independent Living apartments, a Priority Depositor Program was introduced in 2010, offering pre-construction pricing and first choice of the available apartments. In 2011, we reached our Priority Depositor goal and began our Reservation Depositor Program in October. As a result of successful promotion and in-depth prospective resident meetings, 85% of the apartments were reserved by year end, exceeding our expectations.

Our Expansion, slated to be completed in 2014, will also offer feature enhancements to Arleigh Burke Pavilion and the development of a short-term rehabilitation unit within the community center. These enhancements will also enable us to stay at the cutting edge of program services to meet the growing need of our own resident population, as well as the local community. What’s more, our Expansion Project has renewed

Giving back isn’t new to Rear Admiral Frederic Sanford, MC, USN (Ret). As a former Navy doctor, he is also a member of AMSUS, and a prominent community member with many business contacts and personal acquaintances. It was because of these relationships and his philanthropic aspirations that he was first approached by Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation’s (NMCGRF) Board of Trustees more than ten years ago.

A donor since 2000, RADM Sanford first became acquainted with Vinson Hall Retirement Community (VHRC) and then the Foundation, through his wife, Mary Jane, who at the time, was volunteering at the Treasure Shop. Although RADM Sanford never had any intentions of moving to VHRC, he was attracted to the community’s continuum of care, and felt that it serves a deserving group of people.

Soon after joining the Board of Trustees, he quickly became committed to the Mission of NMCGRF and realized there were many more opportunities to offer support, which led RADM Sanford to join the Development Committee, an endeavor that he has found extremely rewarding. His first year as a Trustee he served as Chairman of the Annual Gala and Silent Auction, and has served twice more since then. Most recently, he chaired the Run with Warriors 5K, an event that he felt complemented the Foundation’s fundraising efforts very well.

In more than ten years RADM Sanford has seen a lot of change in the Foundation and in Vinson Hall Retirement Community. He credits our Executive Director and CEO, Rear Admiral Kathy Martin, with energizing the community and pushing for growth through increased community partnerships, greater Board participation, technological advances, and most recently, VHRC’s expansion project. He expressed a sense of excitement to see the community grow, and a sense of awe at how quickly the expansion was embraced. RADM Sanford truly believes the expansion is necessary to ensure the future of VHRC, but expressed some sense of nostalgia, saying that he hopes that the integrity of the property, what he called “a 20-acre oasis,” is preserved.

RADM Sanford puts his time and money where his values are. Over the course of the last decade he has remained committed to the Foundation and he has nearly tripled his level of giving since he first became a Foundation member. While his term on the Boardended in 2012, he intends to remain involved as a volunteer member. Although his commitment is clear in his actions, RADM Sanford remains incredibly humble, saying that his gifts and service is just “helping management do what is necessary to ensure VHRC is providing its residents with the most fulfilling life they can have.”

Building a Solid FoundationOur donors are the architects who have helped us build a solid foundation that will ensure Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation’s long-term success. Because of your generous gifts, Vinson Hall Retirement Community is able to create a better future for our residents and elders within the community through research, technology application, and program development.

While our mission has traditionally served senior veterans, in 2011 we were united by a common goal that brought about a renewed sense of energy and passion for our work: establishing the Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing Project at Vinson Hall Retirement Community. The Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing Project will serve the needs of younger wounded veterans returning from the war in Afghanistan and Iraq who require residential support in an environment that is well suited to their needs. These apartments will be uniquely situated with access to our 24 hour health care monitoring, physical therapy, personal trainers, and most importantly, a place of healing and hope for these men and women who have sacrificed so much.

Before we can begin renovating apartments at Vinson Hall to be used as transitional housing, we must first establish an endowment fund. As our apartments at Vinson Hall are essentially “purchased” by residents via an entry fee, the Foundation must account for the loss of capital as a result of designating apartments for use solely by wounded warriors. In order to designate two one-bedroom apartments for transitional housing, we will need to cover the entrance fees for each, totaling about $500,000.00. In addition, we will need funds to subsidize the monthly rental cost, cost of renovations, and furnishings necessary. We are seeking a total endowment of approximately $1,000,000.00 in order to sustain two apartments and the monthly fees.

Our donors recognized that this aim required not only generosity, but flexibility, and many members in our Membership Program increased their giving as a result of this meaningful appeal. In 2011, we raised more than 27 percent of our goal - $272,898.00 to be dedicated to this project. Funds raised by the Foundation that were not directed to the Wounded Warrior Transitional Housing project helped Vinson Hall Retirement Community to support residents who have outlived their resources, to invest in new technology, and to respond to other immediate organizational needs. Every dollar donated to Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation made a difference. With the continued support of magnanimous donors like you, our blueprint for success will be realized. We will continue to sustain, to grow together, and to leave a lasting legacy.
