PRE-PROGRAM STUDY GUIDE

There are three types of pre-program material that you should prepare before the program begins: 1. Pre-Readings. 2. The Belbin Self-Perception Inventory Test 3. The Executive Challenge 1. Pre-program Readings

The pre-program readings include 2 cases, 3 articles and 3 technical notes. All program pre-reading documentation (see Study Guide table below), as well as practical information, is available on-line on our virtual campus. Learning by the case method is a tried and tested methodology with a very practical and attractive approach for the business world. It was originally founded by Harvard and is, without a doubt, a key learning methodology used by IESE, even though we use other complementary teaching methodologies. Through real-life case studies of companies, program participants and faculty engage in a process of analysis and deep discussion about the circumstances faced by businesses. In order to take full advantage of the sessions using the case method, you will need to read the cases, consider the situation presented in the case, and form an opinion and/or action plan. The technical note Learning by the case method, included in the pre-reading materials, is also helpful for understanding the case method and case preparation. Please, note that it takes about 2 hours to read and prepare a typical case. Therefore, try to limit the time you spend on each case to no more than those 2 hours.

2. The Belbin Self-Perception Inventory test

This test is a way of measuring your preferred behavior when working within a team. Complete your Self-Perception Inventory test should take you about 20 minutes: Log on to: https://e-belbin.com/teamroles16/invlogin.asp Enter your account name: iese-ee Enter your password: BLHPT-2017 * Click on the link supplied below and enter the login details exactly as shown. * Read through the introduction and instructions. * Complete the 8 sections of the Self-Perception Inventory (SPI). You will be given the opportunity to review your responses and then submit the form. You will receive notices on screen and via e-mail confirming successful completion of the inventory. We will receive a copy of your SPI report and will give it to you in Barcelona. Please, complete this test no later than March 28th. Optionally, for those of you who might be interested, there’s The Belbin Observer Assessment

(OA). This second assessment gives 360-degree feedback on your Team Roles. The OA should be completed by those who work or have worked recently with you. Ideally, your observers should be chosen from among colleagues, reports and managers who are familiar with your behavior and know you well in a work environment. The OA is designed to add depth and understanding of your behavior that others see in the workplace. If you rely purely on Self-reporting alone then you are missing out on biggest amount of what Belbin test really has to offer. It should take 5-10 minutes to complete. Note that a minimum of 4 Observer Assessments are required to produce a full report. If you would like to take it, let us know and we will give you further instructions to start the process. Please, bear in mind that the Observer Assessment is not required for the program as Self-Perception Inventory test is.

3. The Executive Challenge

This methodology has been incorporated as an integral element that is solely focused on catering to your individual needs and to create maximum value by generating customized and practical solutions and recommendations for a specific leadership- and/or team-based challenge that you (and/or your company) is facing. Please, send us your completed Executive Challenge no later than March 27th.

4. Optional Resources

Here you will find some optional resources for learning about teams. This is completely optional, but it might give you some interesting starting points for thinking. Movies If you have time and would like to start practicing your skills in analyzing teamwork, here are a few suggestions for movies that you could watch:

1. Mount Everest – this 2015 movie describes the story that forms the basis of the case we will discuss during the program (note that it is not necessary to watch the movie to participate in the case-based discussion).

2. 12 Angry Men – This is a classic movie when it comes to group discussion and decision making. It shows how one person with a different opinion can influence the group as a whole. The original version of the movie from 1957 can be found on YouTube.

3. Moneyball – For those of you who are into sports, here is a 2011 movie about baseball and about the unusual approach a coach takes for his team. It has some very interesting insights about team composition and team leadership.

4. The Stanford Prison Experiment – This 2015 movie describes the disturbing, but real, story of a 1971 social psychological experiment by Stanford University’s Professor Zimbardo. It focuses on issues of conformity and obedience to authority. Based on this experiment, other movies have been made, including the 2001 German version “Das Experiment”.

Books

1. Leading teams: Setting the stage for great performance. J.R. Hackman. 2002. A highly readable and practical book based on solid scientific research by the late Harvard professor J. Richard Hackman, one of the most prominent scholars in the field of organizational behavior in general, and teamwork specifically. The book focuses on how to put in place a set of “essential” and “enabling” conditions for teams to become effective.

2. X-teams: How to build teams that lead, innovate and succeed. D. Ancona and H.

Bresman. 2007. This book adds a new angle to the discussion about teams, namely a focus on how teams can and should reach outwards to achieve their full potential. Whereas much of the discussion on teams focuses “inwards” on issues such as trust, conflict, and communication, this book provides a relevant new angle. It might be especially relevant for those teams working on complex and/or innovative tasks.

3. Thanks for the feedback: The science and art of receiving feedback well. D. Stone &

S. Heen. 2014. This book provides key practical insights into feedback. In contrast to the majority of the work on feedback, this book focuses on feedback receiving rather than giving, and does so “even when it is off base, unfair, poorly delivered, and frankly, you are not in the mood.”
