FSC® – Who Cares?

Since the Forest Stewardship Council wasfounded in the early 1990s, its ‘Chain ofCustody’ certification process has become

recognised globally as the primary standard forsustainable sourcing of timber.

Yet, although the UK government’s ‘TimberProcurement Policy’ guidance, which in essence, requires that only independently verifiable legaland sustainable timber should be used on housing stock, there are indications of inconsistency and a lack of awareness of this, particularly in local authority and housing association property refurbishment projects.

Where’s the issue?Tens of thousands of LA properties are maintained and refurbished every year, oftenrequiring boilers and heating system pipeworkto be concealed. For more than 25 years, pre-formed and pre-finished plywood boxinghas gradually been adopted as the preferred solution for many LAs and HAs, together withcontractors, as it saves time and money compared to site made alternatives.

However, even with the move to sustainabletimber, government procurement guidance andFSC certification, most if not all, LA pipe boxingspecifications still do not specify the use of

products manufactured from FSC certified legaland sustainable timber.

In addition, as FSC pipe boxing costs no morethan its non-FSC equivalent, price is clearly notan obstacle to either its specification or supply. Also, under the scope of their own sustainabilitypolicies, contractors and merchants should bepurchasing and supplying FSC products in preference to non-FSC alternatives. Some wouldeven argue that they should go further and takethe responsibility of advising specifiers that legaland sustainable products are available.

Time for changePrice is clearly not a barrier to change, whichshould help stimulate interest from specifiersand contractors alike to adopt pipe boxing manufactured from independently verified legaland sustainable timber.

LAs, HAs, contractors and merchants are probably just as focused on sustainability andsustainably sourced products, as we are at Encasement, but, for some reason it’s not beingapplied to the use of pre-formed pipe boxing, which is worth millions of pounds to maintenance contractors, heating engineers and merchants nationally.

Throughout the supply chain everyone has aresponsibility for sustainable procurement, so inour view a lack of awareness or understandingabout these obligations is no defence, especiallyas existing government guidance has set out thepolicy that should be adopted.

So, what is the answer to the question of FSC,who cares? “We all should.”

The interiors of many buildings, as well as some exteriors, would be considerably less attractive and practical, if it wasn’t for column casings and interior wall lining solutions. A bold statement perhaps, but column

casings are an essential part of contemporarybuilding design and perform a vital functionby providing an effective, stylish andimmensely versatile method of concealingstructural steelwork, concrete columns andin some cases, building services. While there may be very few people who

will stand back to admire laminated plywoodcolumn casings in schools, hospitals andretail outlets or brushed stainless steel wallcladding in a prestige office building or hotel, they play a key role in the aesthetics ofcountless building environments. The use of column casings has grown

dramatically since the early 1980s wheretheir primary role was purely to cover structural supports with comparatively littleconsideration as a method of adding visual

decoration to a building.Since then, the demand for wider choice

and increased aesthetics from design conscious architects, interior designersand specifiers has been a key influence on Peterborough based decorative casing specialist, Encasement, whose range hasexpanded and diversified considerably overthe past ten years to become the most com-prehensive available in the UK.The company’s complete range includes

‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ which are manufacturedfrom pre-formed plywood, alongside its‘Forma’ metal casings, ‘Polyma’ GRP and‘Gypra’ GRG product ranges. ‘Metza’, a specialised solution that provides mezzaninefloor columns with up to 2 hours fire protec-tion is also available.Versatility is a key feature behind a diverse

range of projects where the column casing’sdesign has been used to accent an interior orprovide a unique aspect to a building. Thishigh degree of freedom enables major brands, particularly in the retail sector,

to specify colours that not only adhere totheir brand guidelines but also add to the customer experience.Encasement’s ‘Forma’ metal casings, for

example, provide specifiers with a diverserange of options and can be specified withdiameters from 250mm up to 1000mm or assquare, rectangular and hexagonal forms, aswell as unique custom profiles. While all of Encasement’s column casings

are suitable for interior use, its ‘Polyma’ GRPproducts and ‘Forma’ range, which can bemanufactured from aluminium or stainlesssteel, are also widely used on exterior proj-ects due to their inherent weather resistance. Recent projects, such as Tetrosyl’s new

head office reception, Birmingham DentalHospital and Winchester College, togetherwith Porsche West London’s prestige showroom, Kia’s recently opened flagshippremises on London’s Great West Road andDebenhams’ major store at Cheshire Oaks, all perfectly illustrate the versatility of‘Forma’ column casing solutions. At Tetrosyl, the casings are a unique aero-

distinctly different finishes to meet individualproject specifications. In addition, theWinchester casings are used both on thebuilding’s exterior, as well as its interior.Alongside ‘Forma’, Encasement’s ‘Circa’

and ‘Quadra’ pre-formed plywood columncasings ranges were the first to be introducedby the company and are still arguably themost popular, as they provide specifiers andcontractors with an unrivalled selection offinishes, which includes plain, laminated orreal wood veneers. While ‘Circa’ is available from Encasement

as a plain casings for on site painting anddecoration, by far the most popular casingsare those finished with decorative laminates, which not only resist damage, scuffs andscratches, but also provides the specifier witha diverse palette of finishes including plaincolours, wood grain and metallic, as well astextured and real wood veneers, to name buta few.

Both ‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ are manufac-tured from FSC® certified plywood andEncasement is the UK’s only supplier andmanufacturer of pre-formed plywood pipe boxing and decorative casing productsthat holds an FSC® ‘Chain of CustodyCertification’ from the Forest StewardshipCouncil. This makes the products compliantwith sustainability codes and environmentalprocurement policies.

Designed solely for interior applications,‘Circa’ and ‘Quadra’ are used in almost everybuilding type from education, retail, hotel, sports and leisure to health sector and com-mercial office buildings. As a result, thechoice of sizes available is also wide, allowingspecifiers to choose not only circular andsquare, but also extended circles and rectangular profiles, which use additionalinfill panels to give greater flexibility whileensuring they are still easy to install.Recent Quadra projects include

Farnborough’s 6th Form Centre and theDame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre, whileamong the many ‘Circa’ installations,Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal, LiverpoolUniversity and Gateshead InternationalStadium are major installations.Alongside the company’s column casings,

its ‘Vecta’ system provides a high qualitysolution for interior wall linings, bulkheadsand reveals. Launched just a few years ago, the system has been widely used in retail, education and commercial buildings, such as Tesco, South Bank University and Prêt a Manger, as well as prestigiousoffice developments, including WellingtonHouse and the Carmine building inPaddington, London.Encasement’s Managing Director, Martin

Taylor, commented: “Column casingsprovide a perfect mix of practicality and

aesthetics and we’ve taken a lot of care toensure our range meets both of these key criteria while also ensuring that we alwaysremain competitive and deliver high qualityproducts. Our entire range has been config-ured to provide the widest possible choice aswell as being easy to specify.” He added: “The Vecta interior cladding

system enhances our building interiors offerand allows specifiers to source a range of specialised interior finish products from asingle company with high levels of expertiseand experience in this sector. We also haveour own contracting arm, which enables usto offer a full supply and install service tosupport contractors.”Encasement’s latest ‘column casing solu-

tions’ e-brochure is available for downloadfrom the company’s website and covers everyproduct in the range as well as providingdetails on materials, sizes and finishes avail-able alongside an extensive technical infor-mation section.

Anew research project beingundertaken by the University ofSheffield into the use of predictive

modelling to save energy in non-domesticbuildings, is drawing on expertise and datafrom leading smoke and environmentalventilation specialist, SE Controls, to helpsupport the study.Funded by a grant from the Engineering

and Physical Sciences Research Council(EPSRC), the new research programmeexplores the potential of making energysavings of up to 25 per cent through thedevelopment and use of Model PredictiveControl (MPC) in commercial buildings. The project will use advanced machine

learning techniques, a branch of artificialintelligence, to construct a building controlsystem that produces good internalconditions while using the smallest amount ofenergy possible, allowing more sustainabledesign and usage. This knowledge and expertise of

controlling natural ventilation was one of thereasons behind SE Controls being invited toform part of the project steering group for theMPC research.SE Controls’ Design Manager, Dr. Chris

Iddon, who will attend the steering groupmeetings, explained: “Non-domesticbuildings, such as office spaces, currentlyaccount for 18 per cent of the UK’s carbonemissions and between 40-90 per cent of this

is energy consumed in the heating and coolingof buildings. Also, data from The CarbonTrust estimates that around £500 millionworth of energy is wasted by commercialbuildings every year, so this research intomore effective building control andmanagement is essential.”In addition to the involvement of SE

Controls, academics from the university’sdepartments of Civil & StructuralEngineering, Electronic & ElectricalEngineering and School of Architecture arealso working with other leading industrypartners, including Arup, Buro Happold,LCMB and Trend Control Systems as part ofthe process of exploring methods to makeMPC economically viable for building energymanagement.Further information on SE Controls’

Sometimes, glass designers focus tooheavily on the aesthetic and formalaspects of projects without going into

the detail of how laminated glass behaves, especially in a moment of catastrophe. This ispartly why the latest technical standards andthe most recent technical documents requireunderstanding of the behaviour of laminatedglass after a partial or total glass catastrophe.

For many years, the role of polymer inter-layer in the overall behaviour of laminatedglass was not taken into account givenpolyvinyl butyral’s minimum or negligibleshear transfer between panes of glass. PVB iswithout doubt the most popular plastic inter-layer in the production of laminated glass forstructural and non structural applications.

Today, however, there are extremely inter-esting laminate interlayers on the market withsubstantially more sheer behaviour than thatoffered by traditional PVB. These polymersprimarily include the so called structuralPVBs (DG41 by Solutia and Trosifol ES byKuraray) as well as Kuraray’s Sentry GlassPlus and Evasafe by Bridgestone.

CompatibleWhat makes these polymers worthy of noteis not only their greater rigidity to shear stressbut also the stability and retention of thisprerogative in the medium and long term, andin temperature ranges that are totally compat-ible with the standard requirements forcreating laminated glass walk-on glass, roofs, steps, railings and walls/shop windows.

Correct design must globally consider theaspects influencing the mechanical behaviourof glass for structural applications and takeinto account the behaviour of the “laminatedglass and relative securing systems” not onlyin conditions of ordinary functioning (SLS) oroverload conditions (ULS) but also in cases ofpartial (CLS) or total (PR) breakage of thelaminated glass in the least favourableenvironmental conditions.

The temperature of the load application isa key parameter in determining the behaviourof laminated glass. As the temperatureincreases, the rigidity of the laminated glassdiminishes because of the reduced rigidity ofthe plastic interlayer. All plastic interlayersalter their behaviour according totemperature, some considerably (standardPVB and structural PVB), others in a far less

obvious manner (Evasafe and DG41).At temperatures above 20ºC with medium

and long duration loads, the behaviour ofEvasafe is especially interesting since its stiff-ness remains virtually constant whereas thatof PVBs (both ordinary and structural) con-tinue to decrease with time and temperature, falling rapidly below the values of Evasafe.

If the behaviour of the polymer variessubstantially according to temperature, theoverall behaviour of the laminated glass willalso vary. At the design phase, it is necessaryto consider the most serious conditions forthe laminated (glass plus plastic interlayer) instandard conditions.

Another parameter that impacts stronglyon the behaviour of plastic interlayers (andconsequently that of the laminate containingthem) is the duration of the load application.

For applications envisaging the long-termapplication of loads, and having to size thelaminated glass in the most demanding dura-tion and temperature conditions, it may proveeffective, in order to reduce the glass thicknessin play, to use a polymer with reducedvariability in stiffness over time and/or withtemperature, rather than a plastic thatperforms well in ordinary conditions but isfar less stiff in the more extreme cases.

A third extremely important design aspectwhen choosing a plastic interlayer consists inassessing so-called environmental robustness, which is a polymer’s ability to withstandenvironmental attacks, expressed essentiallyby assessing resistance to water, humidity andUV rays over time.

Another important aspect of the designstage is the behaviour of the laminate glass inthe event of partial (one sheet in the laminate)or total breakage of the laminate glass. In thecase of structural applications, this aspectclearly cannot be overlooked. Safety criteriain the event of a glass catastrophe can beschematically defined as follows:

• Collapse Limit State – the need toguarantee structural safety by foreseeingthat every glass element for structuralapplications can sustain the externaldesign loads, even with a broken pane.

• Post Breakage behaviour – “the need tolimit the risk of immediate post-breakagecollapse”. This aim, obvious to all skilleddesigners, must be achieved by defining

suitable combinations of glass and plasticinterlayer, in keeping with the chosensecuring system.

Design awarenessThe role of alternative plastic interlayers tothe PVB ones available on the market, and theavailability of technical design documentspublished in Europe in recent years, meansthat it is today possible to design laminateglass with formerly unthinkable awareness. This new design awareness calls for the com-bination of the need for resistance with designloads and post breakage safety criterion.

The introduction of the Collapse LimitState and Post Breakage concepts have rooted the awareness that laminated glass is far more than a combination of simplepanes of glass and that its global behaviourdepends onthe securing systems as well as theplastic interlayer.

In order to improve the behaviour oflaminated glass, or to increase the sizes butwith the same thickness (a crucial aspect inthe architectural sphere), it is possible to con-sider interlayer polymers that make a majorcontribution to the transfer of shear stressbetween panes subjected to external actions. The intrinsic features of these polymers forstructural applications are also very interest-ing in terms of contribution to the PostBreakage behaviour they are able to provideto the laminate as a whole.

Today’s designers have the option of usingseveral types of laminated glass thanks to thepresence on the market of various types ofinterlayer with diverse specifications that maybe more or less suited to a specific situation.

028 3025 0409 www.mgwglassservices.com

Understanding laminated glassStructural applications are one of the glazing areas offering the greatest added value for glass processors, but it is important to avoid improvisation and risks according to Michel Palumbo and Maria TeresaMazzucchelli, glass safety service designers for Vetrostrutturale.

With much discussion and debate onhow to solve the UK’s housing crisis, recent Government plans are

considering Modular Homes as a solution. Thedesign and build of modular homes might besimple and affordable but what heating sourcewill be used to keep them warm? A gas gridconnection or renewable heating source maynot be economical therefore Electric Heatingcould be the answer. The Electric Heating Company’s SlimJim

electric boiler could be perfect for ModularHomes. The compact design of the SlimJimboiler makes it ideal for heating applicationswhere space is at a premium. The Slim Jim is afully controllable electric flow boiler which isdesigned to maximise cupboard space. Supplied in various thicknesses and weighing an average of half a kilo per cubicfoot, the modular polystyrene blocks are 100per cent recyclable and extremely lightweight, keeping manual handling to a minimum.

Pre-engineered in the United States andpre-fabricated locally in the UK, the EPS insulation is supplied cut to size and eachpiece numbered, so they can be easily

manoeuvred through pedestrian doorwaysand areas still undergoing construction.

The polystyrene foam blocks are deliveredper auditorium and are coordinated with theinstallation crew at EOMAC on site for ajust-in-time delivery schedule to minimizedowntime of the theatre and maximize efficiency of the installation. A full set ofdetailed shop drawings are prepared and supplied to the installing contractor byStadium Seating Enterprises so they are awareof the intended location for each piece of EPS block.

Installation couldn’t be simpler or quickereither. The pre-numbered blocks slot togetherlike a jigsaw puzzle and are adhesively andmechanically fixed on the riser and tread ofeach level. EOMAC has experience installingthese riser systems on multiple projectsthroughout the United States and Canada andhas now brought this technology to the UKalongside Stadium Seating Enterprises, man-ufactured by S and B EPS out of Cramlington.

The insulation is then encapsulated in twolayers of 18mm plywood, ready to accept thefinished flooring surface.

A great plus point on these types ofschemes is that because of the geometry of theblocks, the weight is distributed evenly acrossthe surface and no point load is achieved.

S and B’s Managing Director DarrenSmith, said: “This is a very exciting projectfor S and B EPS to be involved in and hopefully the first of many.

“Although the technology has been usedon stadia seating across the United States fora number of years, it is still a unique conceptin the UK. The collaboration between

Stadium Seating, EOMAC and S and B hasevolved over a period of four years, withmuch collaboration having taken place during that time.

“It’s particularly satisfying that from asimple introductory Skype call, we are nowmanufacturing and witnessing the installationof their PREFoam™ EPS systems on local UKbased projects and theatres.

“The flexibility and speed of installation is absolutely key to this system’s success.Since all systems are custom designed and manufactured for each individual application, the fact that they’re of a modular nature means that they’re ideal foreither new construction or retrofit and renovation situations.

“Steel, concrete and EPS components canbe made in virtually any height or depth andcan easily be adapted to conform to virtuallyany platform design, shape or configurationin any cinema, theatre, lecture hall, worshipfacility or performing arts auditorium.

“The possibilities are endless and I’ve nodoubt that this method is set to revolutionisethe design and construction of staged seatingprojects in the UK in the future”.

The Light Cinema, Sheffield, is due to openits doors in Spring 2017.

With globalization and the everincreasing levels of world trade, container ships have increased in

length, draught and capacity. The London Gateway Port provides 2,700

metres of quay, seven deep-water berths withdepth alongside of 17m , 24 giant quay cranesand an annual capacity of 3.5 million TEU(Twenty foot Equivalent Units).Much of the London Gateway Port’s

container transfer and handling area isconcreted so effective surface water drainagewas a major consideration to ensure efficientall-weather operation. Hauraton supplied a total of 140m of

RECYFIX® HICAP® 100 and 300 highcapacity channels to drain surface water fromBerth 7, developed by Pentalver for DP Ports, the HICAP® drainage system is able to accepta total water volume of 21,994 litres. As the main HICAP® channel components

are made from 100 per cent recycledcomposite Polypropylene (PP) they are notsusceptible to corrosion. By affording asuperior overall hydraulic performance, theHICAP® system generally allows engineersand contractors’ flexibility in surface designand installation, reducing the number ofchannel runs normally required to drain agiven area. This reduction means lessunderground excavations, materials and

vastly reduced installation time. As there arefewer runs required, the surfaces strength isnot compromised whilst future maintenanceand cleaning is also reduced. The Hauraton channels at Berth 7 were

installed in one run so keeping the excavationwork a minimum. In addition to the HICAP® channel run a

further 30m of FASERFIX® KS 100 and 150were installed in access roads. These channelswere fitted with 9mm slot ductile irongratings and provided a loading category ofClass E600. The FASERFIX® KS channelcomponent is made from Fibre ReinforcedConcrete (FRC) with galvanised steelpressings permanently moulded along theirtop edges, so with the gratings fitted, theunit’s exposed surfaces are highly resistantto wear.

It’s time for stylish new air conditioning units using R32Mitsubishi Electric has launched a new line-up of wall-mounted air conditioning units with a sophisticated, streamlined design and a comprehensive range of features to make stylish, energy efficient air conditioningavailable for countless small businesses. The M Series MSZ-LN range is the first product in the company’s UKline up to utilise R32 refrigerant – which has a low global warming potential (GWP). Mitsubishi Electric willalso launch further R32 air conditioning solutions throughout the coming year. In March 2014, the EuropeanParliament passed the 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation legislation with the key objective of reducing F-Gas emissionsby 79 per cent between 2015 and 2030. The overall intention is to cut the availability of hydrofluorocarbons(HFCs) with a high GWP. The F-Gas Regulations will have a major impact on the air conditioning sector andany option for the next generation of refrigerant gas must be able to meet the demands of this stringent legislation in reducing the environmental impact of HFCs. The MSZ-LN range offers a choice of four sizesfrom 2.5kW to 6.1kW, with four distinct indoor wall units which are available in various colours.

The Primark Distribution Centre, near Kettering was developed byLondon Metric Property Plc. Known

as Thunderbird 2 the £77 million facilitycomprises a 93,000m² warehouse, some5,000m² of office space and 50,000m² ofhard standing with parking for 175 HGVsand 530 cars. A major earthworks operationwas necessary to level the ground and createthe vast plateau on which the building andhard standings were constructed. With such alarge hard standing area an effective surfacewater drainage system was essential.Having supplied high capacity surface

water drainage channels for hard-standingareas at numerous distribution centresthorough out the UK, Hauraton wereconfident their RECYFIX® HICAP® highcapacity channels would comply with the stringent specification asked for bythe contractors. It was decided to drain the hard standing

area using four sizes of RECYFIX® HICAP®

– 100, 200, 300 and 680 because of theiroverall volume capacities. As well as straightruns of 100 and 200 channels, the 200, 300and 680 sizes were installed in a step fallarrangement providing an enhanced watervolume for these runs of 366,324 litres permetre (l/m). All the sizes supplied had fixedductile iron, 14mm open slot inlets finishedwith KTL, a rust resistant coating. All 1229metres of RECYFIX® HICAP® channelinstalled complied with loading category

All building companies are looking for ways to expand their business.Products to upsell to existing customers, opportunities to revisit previouscustomers and options to develop new markets – PVC cladding could bethat opportunity. There has been a huge interest in external claddingproducts in recent years, partly driven by aspirational TV shows like GrandDesigns where it seems that every new build project features cladding insome way. Timber is still popular but homeowners are now looking formore low maintenance options – many busy families have little time orskill for the on-going re-painting and repair that timber requires. FreefoamBuilding Products are specialist PVC manufacturers producing a widerange of long lasting, low maintenance cladding products. The Freefoamcladding range features a choice of a smooth woodgrain finish or Fortex®timber effect embossed boards in Shiplap, Double Shiplap andWeatherboard styles.

Around eight million people a year areexpected to be sheltering underKalwall at the beautifully-designed

new bus station at West Croydon. Designedby Transport for London Architects, this is anunusual example of how translucent Kalwallcan offer many different advantages aboveits normal use for translucent traditionalbuilding cladding and rooflighting.

The brief for this project was to create auser-friendly waiting and assembly shelter toservice the thousands of passengers using thisimportant and busy transport hub linking the150 buses an hour with the adjacent tramstop and West Croydon railway station.

The normal choice of construction for atranslucent and weatherproof canopy wouldbe to glaze the roof with glass, However in-house architect Martin Eriksson and theproject team at TfL realised that Kalwalloffered a better solution in this locationwhich would not only solve the brief andcontribute to a better design but would offermany other benefits over traditional glazing.

For example, since Kalwall is much lighterthan glass it meant that the supporting

structure needed to be less strong and far lesschunky. In additional, not only would theshelter be less high but the vertical supportswould be less obstructive and open up abetter view of the environment.

Unlike conventional glazing, highlyinsulating Kalwall is far more attractive than glass while eliminating shadows andglare and the stark contrasts of lightand shade; improving the experience forpassengers below.

Also, due to the way it diffuses naturaldaylight downwards and at night reducesvertical illumination and reflection upwards,it controls light pollution on the surrounding

high rise buildings. Soil and detritus are lessobvious on Kalwall than on glass and maintenance and cleaning is much simplerbecause access scaffolding is not required andmaintenance staff can safely walk acrossits surface.

One of the main attractions of specifyinghigh performance Kalwall for conventionalbuildings is its unique effect on both theinterior and exterior. Internally, rooms areflooded with diffused natural daylight whichcreates a stimulating and very attractiveenvironment. Although translucent, it alsooffers the big advantage of privacy while theelevations appear crisp, simple and inviting. When illuminated at night they emit a veryattractive ethereal glow.

Apart from being specified for all types ofnew build, Kalwall is increasingly used for therefurbishment of cladding or rooflights onaged buildings. Case studies and technicalinformation are available from Structura UK Ltd.

Windowsecurity isa key

design requirementwith all marketleading systemstested to the PAS 24standard to meet thedemands of theSecure By Design

(SBD) initiative and Building RegulationsApproved Document Q (ADQ).

Automated windows that are utilised forventilation strategies will also need to comply tothe standard, which requires the actuators toresist 3000N of negative force when the windowis closed. This is becoming commonplace inapplications such as school refurbishmentwhere facade automation remains a popularand cost effective solution of providingimproved ventilation performance overmanually operated windows.

The SECO N 24 25 twin actuator from SEControls has successfully passed the PAS 24 testand in addition to presenting physical resistance

to intruders, it also provides a signal to thecontroller, should the window fail to close fully,to maintain the integrity of the security system,as requested by the SBD schools standard. Twolocking points in one neat enclosure withprogrammable gasket relief optimise weatherperformance and security to meet BS 6375 parts one, two and three in addition to the PAS 24 test.

Bespoke fixing brackets and reinforcement tothe window is often required to providesufficient strength for the fixing, which is usuallythe weakest point of resistance, as the actuatorprovides two x 4000N of resistance to forced opening.

The ability to manufacture bespoke bodylengths allows SE Controls to locate the lockingpoints on different size windows exactly astested, relative to the corners, to maintainconsistency of performance and compliance.Test conducted with an actuator located at thecentre of a vent will either not pass the test orcan only be utilised for different widths.

Similar to EN12101-2, the fabrication andinstallation solution requires a process that is

audited by an independent notified body andmust be re-tested annually.

If you have requirements for SBD or ADQcertified automated windows, please contactthe SE Controls team for further information.

Great returns at St James’ PlaceSt James’ Place Wealth Management Group recently moved into their new £10 million phase II office buildingin Cirencester, which is equipped with a comprehensive solar shading and screening solution from Levolux.Having fitted an external solar shading solution for the original building, Levolux was invited back to developa custom solar shading and screening solution for the phase II office building. The new office building featuresan abundance of glazed openings on all elevations. This helps to maximise daylight levels and provideoccupants with good outward visibility. To complement the glazing, Levolux developed a solar shading solutioncomprising its Infiniti Fin system and Aerofoil Fins, applied externally, along with motorised internal RollerBlinds and Venetian Blinds. Five Aerofoil Fins, each measuring 200mm wide, have been incorporated into 60horizontal panels, fixed at roof level. Together, the panels, which have a projection of 1.2 metres, resemble a‘halo’ that encircles the building. In addition, Levolux utilised its Infiniti® Fin system, incorporating 300mmwide aerofoil-shaped fins, fixed horizontally to the building’s south, east and west-facing elevations.

Located in Dungannon, the McAvoyGroup is an off-site constructionprovider specialised in modular and

panel system builds. Since 2015, it has beenworking with Trespa Pura NFC® cladding onseveral school projects across the country. When The McAvoy Group was chosen to

build the new Rise SEN School in Feltham, the project planning already included detailedrequirements on the materials that had to beused to clad the façade. “The project hadbeen passed by planning with a ‘timber effect’composite board,” says Keith Anderson,McAvoy’s Contracts Buyer. The cladding needed to be easy to maintain

and to install, be available in various coloursand to have a high impact resistance andcolour stability. It also needed to have a fastdelivery programme. “Trespa Pura NFC® was one of the mate-

rials that could meet all the requirements. With Trespa, we had the expectation that thisproduct would come with an excellent service

and client management,” explains Anderson. As with other projects, The McAvoy Group

was able to reduce the construction lead timesfor the Rise SEN School by using a modularbuild. The company considers this method to be the future of construction. “With theUK government's 2025 vision for the construction sector, the strategy is 33 per centlower costs, 50 per cent faster deliverytimescales, 50 per cent lower emissions and

50 per cent improvement in exports. Toachieve this, modular construction will be atthe forefront of this change,” says Anderson. For McAvoy, Trespa Pura NFC® proved an

“excellent fit” for this modern method ofconstruction. “With its ease of installationand flexibility, we are able to choose to fit thecladding within factory conditions whenapplicable, or we can install on site ifrequired,” adds Anderson. By working jointly with Trespa, the

Dungannon based company managed to meetthe tight timescales, from date of order todelivery of the product. The Rise SEN School was completed

in April 2016. Since then, McAvoy has finished three other modular school buildingsclad with Trespa Pura NFC®. They arelocated in Salisbury, Dagenham and LynchHill, respectively.
