Search Tips for Teachers

The Library of Congress holds millions and millions of wonderful treasures that can be challenging to locate online. Here are a few tips for teachers:

1. There may be sources you can pull from source sets curated by the Library: http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/

2. Try Google Advance for your search: https://www.google.com/advanced_search. Narrow your search to loc.gov as a filter.

3. Here’s a link to a Google primary source search engine: https://cse.google.com/cse/home?cx=005122431749820216170:hshk5euw5uw. Type in a subject/topic and loc.gov for your search.

4. Check out Exhibitions from the Library for source sets as well. http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/. There’s a new WWI one: http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/american-artists-view-the-great-war/

5. Research bibliography at the Library: http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/bibhome.html#W

6. Diversify your search terms to include historical phrases and terms from your period of study.

Highschool Standards Alignment

NGSS Standards: ESS2-1, ESS2-2 HS-ETS1-2. Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.HS-ESS3-4. Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems. HS-PS1-4 Develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the relationships between systems or between components of a systemHS-PS1-7 Use mathematical representations of phenomena to support claimsHSN-Q.A.1 Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays. CCSS ELA: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.11-12.2Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.CCSS Math: CCSS.Math.Practice.MP4 Model with mathematics.IL-Social Studies:SS.G.1.9-12: Use maps (created using geospatial and related technologies, if possible), satellite images, and photographs to display and explain the spatial patterns of physical, cultural, political, economic and environmental characteristics.

Example Questions :

What do you see in the picture? What was the purpose of this bridge? How is this bridge different from other bridges that you are familiar with? When do you think the event took place? What do you think that initiated the collapse of the bridge?Do you think that lives were lost during this natural disaster? Was there a way to prevent this weather related catastrophe? Why is it necessary to create and test a model before building a bridge?

More Exploration

▹ Think of a topic you teach and try to locate a primary source that can be utilized in your classroom.

PadletWe modeled this strategy today!

▹ Have students contribute on a whole-class landing page in order to collaborate!

▹ Have students create individual/ group Padlets to share their thoughts with the class on various primary sources

▹ Allows every child to have a voice

Page 43: Building Digital Primary Sources - Governors State Universityaam.govst.edu/PDF/2019/Building Digital Fluency through Primary Sources .pdf · • Library of Congress has a Teaching

Slides/ PowerPoint▹ Use Google Slides/ Power Point to

create a “reveal” slide with your primary source to target audience focus

▹ Use the primary source teachers guides to ask questions as students analyze

▹ Ask students how their perceptions might have changed if you had changed the order of the “reveals”

Page 45: Building Digital Primary Sources - Governors State Universityaam.govst.edu/PDF/2019/Building Digital Fluency through Primary Sources .pdf · • Library of Congress has a Teaching

Gallery Walk▹ Select a group of primary sources centered

around a particular topic▹ Paste primary sources at top of chart paper

and place around different areas of the room

▹ Students rotate through charts and comment on sources--could have students list observations, reflections, questions, research ideas

▹ Conclude with reflection discussion on connection between sources

Ed Puzzle▹ Incorporates a video into your lesson▹ To move on in the video, students must

answer questions at certain places.▹ Works with Ted, National Geographic,

Khan Academy, and YouTube.▹ Has premade videos or self-made

lessons.▹ Works with Google Classroom rosters for

tracking student progress.

White Paper Series: Building Critical Thinking Skills with Primary Sources: Investigating Beyond Facts by Britannica Digital Learning states, "Research in education stresses that the use of primary sources in K–12 classrooms has many learning benefits. In addition to expanding students’ world knowledge,5 offering opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, and increasing student engagement, teaching with primary sources helps students develop critical thinking skills.6 Studies also recognize that making meaning from primary sources is challenging, that students need clear guidance about how to work with different kinds of primary sources, and that both teachers and students require practice in analyzing primary sources.7 Educational researchers understand that students’ analyses of primary sources build critical thinking skills that are much needed and relevant for the 21st-century classroom.8 Additionally, research suggests that there are opportunities to build critical thinking with primary sources in all fields of study."
