Understanding the term ‘Relationship’• Relationship: The state of being related• Related: 1. Connected by some understood

relationship.2. Connected through membership in the same family.

The key is CONNECTION, which can be established through effective COMMUNICATION.

Relationships: Defining Main Characteristics• FORMALITY: the amount of distance between

the people defines the type of relationship, from formal to intimate.

• ACCESSIBILITY: the openness, willingness to exchange information (self-disclosure).

• RECIPROCITY: certain behaviors are called for in the relationship and others are prohibited; each person has expectations which must be fulfilled.

• COMMITMENT: the degree to which each person is uniquely a part of the relationship; the interchangeableness of the people.

• SPONTANEITY: the freedom or lack of freedom to engage in spontaneous behaviors, free of role expectations of the other.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication can mean the ability to relate to people in written as well as verbal communication.

This type of communication can occur in both a one-on-one and a group setting.

This also means being able to handle different people in different situations, and making people feel at ease.

Self Disclosure• Social penetration theory (Altman & Taylor,

1973): Relationships are formed by a gradual process of self-disclosure; the sharing of personal facts, inner thoughts and feelings.

• Collins & Miller (1994): A meta analysis showed that people who disclose intimate information about themselves are more liked than people whodon’t.

Individual Differences

• Tannen (1990): In observational studies, she found gender differences in how men and women have conversations. Men interrupt more, women use more language tags, women prefer emotional support whereas men tend to have a problem solving approach to problems.

• Reis (1986): Women self disclose more than men. Women also disclose more to other women than men to other men.

Summary and ConclusionCommunicating and relating effectively with others is an important life skill and one of the most important forms of human intelligence.

We need to relate to others in a way that acknowledges their humanity and individuality, and preserves or promotes their self-esteem. We should strive to bring out the best in others by being helpful friends, positive role models, and effective leaders.
