What is the YSP/KSA Professional Development Series?

Youth Service Professionals’ Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (YSP/KSA) Professional Development Goal to support professionals working with youth to improve the quality of programs and practices for youth to achieve positive outcomes. Builds capacity on professional and organizational levels 9 Competencies NCWD/Youth and NYEC knew it was critical to identify the key competencies that youth service professionals needed. To start, we collected the practical and relevant lists of competencies from three fields of practice (youth development, education and workforce development) including disability focused programs, from over 70 different initiatives. Types of initiatives we looked at: those that identified key competencies for staff; those that prepared training materials and/or those that certified individuals. Did not include pre-service education curriculums. We developed a list of the competencies that appeared commonly among these 70+ initiatives. Once we had an initial list of KSAs through that research, then reached out to a range of stakeholders in the youth development, workforce development, education and disabilites arenas for validation. Did these KSAs make sense? Connected with youth service practitioners themselves, program administrators, trainers, and individuals who oversee, fund and develop policy for programs. Feedback and refinement through several stakeholder meetings; focus groups; and an online questionnaire

Pass out the KSA Professional Development Plan and KSA Assessment for organizations and systems. Briefly review how these can be used: KSA Professional Development Plan: tool for youth service professionals to use with their supervisors to set professional development goals and track progress towards those goals. Designed to be used with KSA assessment but can also be used with other skill assessment tools already in use at an organization. KSA Assessment for Organizations and Systems: This tool can be used to gauge progress toward the establishment of a system of professional development across organizations and systems. KSA Info Briefs: you already have one, used earlier when reviewing KSAs Website has all the KSA tools we have discussed. Plus, has information on how the KSAs can be helpful to different audiences: staff and administrators at organizations providing services to youth; policy makers; employers; youth and families. And has a detailed Study Guide which provides learning objectives and resources for building each KSA competency TRANSITION: So, how are organizations already using the KSA’s?

The Y-TAC Partnership

In the pre- and post-test self-efficacy evaluation on eight training objectives, there was a significant increase in participants’ self-efficacy after the training.

The pre-test mean for Module 5 was 3.26 (95% confidence interval 2.92-3.60). The post-test mean for Module 5 was 4.29 (95% confidence interval 3.99-4.58).
