The Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) was founded

in 2005 through a Royal Decree by His Highness

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the

United Arab Emirates (UAE), as a corporate body with

full financial and administrative independence.

The establishment of the Institute was an initiative of

General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. His Highness envisioned

IAT as a world class Career-Technical Education system

that would produce the scientists, engineers, and

technologists needed for the UAE to build a

knowledge-based economy.

History and Mandate

Abu Dhabi Polytechnic (AD Poly) was established by IAT and licensed by the

Ministry of Higher Education and Scienti�c Research to o�er a dual educational-professional

training system with multiple high-tech disciplines (specializations) to produce

technologists and engineers to serve the UAE industrial manpower required

for Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.

The Institute of Applied Technology, the Emirates

Nuclear Energy Corporation, and the Korea Electric

Power Corporation agreed on the 27th of

December 2009 to cooperate to help develop the

educational infrastructure providing the required

qualified manpower to the emerging nuclear

industry in the United Arab Emirates. It is the

mandate of AD Poly to establish and implement a

program capable of qualifying national graduates

to join the nuclear industry as skilled manpower.

The AD Poly integrates knowledge and practical

skills through balanced delivery of academic

material at AD Poly and OJT by a nuclear industry

training provider. This offers the students a solid

career path towards gaining an accredited Higher

Diploma in Nuclear Technology while receiving

training leading to job qualification certificates in

operational, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation

and control, chemical, and radiation protection

specializations.

The advantage of this program is that it allows

graduates with high achievements and ambition to

pursue higher educational studies. Due to the lack

of nuclear power industry training facilities in the

UAE, OJT and workplace experience will often be

conducted in concert with industrial partners in

other countries, such as South Korea.

The emerging of Electromechanical Engineering Technology Program (EMET) aims to provide candidates with the knowledge and the hands-on skills of integrated multi-disciplinary systems. Electromechanical Engineering Technology program merges electronics, mechanical, control systems, computer intelligence and mechatronics principles and technologies needed to operate, manufacture and maintain complex products and processes. The integration of these technologies allows candidates to develop the evaluative and know-how skills needed to be employed when working with modern technological products and processes.

EMET program is structured to award candidates with a Higher Diploma over three years plus one year top-up to award a Bachelor in Applied Engineering. Moreover, to guarantee a world-class industrial certification and international standards, EMET has been developing a partnership with several international industries and institutions such as Siemens Technical Academy (STA) of Berlin, FESTO Didactic from Germany, and OPITO from Aberdeen in Scotland to benchmark the Scottish Qualification Authority Framework (SQA). Such certification

As an emerging field, the dual certification at the national and international levels secured by the Ministry of Higher Education (UAE) as well Siemens, FESTO and SQA will provide the graduate with a competitive solid career path. Siemens and FESTO Mechatronics certification will open the

opportunities to work in several advanced manufacturing technologies such as but not limited to food industry, automation, packaging, civil works, train railways, thermal and electrical power plants, electronics industry, aerospace, PLCs, instrumentation, robotics, and computer-controlled systems. Meanwhile, the OPITO competent certificates will guarantee jobs in the oil and gas industry as a mechanical or electrical or instruments and control technologist or as an engineer.

EMET has been establishing state-of-the-art laboratories and FESTO center of excellence in: robotics, automation, process control, pneumatics and hydraulics, programmable logic controllers (PLC), high and low voltage, distributed control system (DCS), supervisory control and data acquisition, (SCADA) and smart grids.

EMET is aligned along with strategic partners who sponsor EMET students such as Global Aerospace Enterprises (GAL), Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), Siemens UAE, De Lorenzo Italy, ADNOC, Emirates Steel, and the Armed Forces.

To meet the growing demands for Emirati

Information Technology (IT) professionals and

skilled manpower from various commercial,

private/public, and governmental sectors in the

Abu Dhabi Emirate, AD Poly decided to open a new

program in Information Security Engineering

Technology. This program is designed to serve UAE’s

national information security and privacy. It focuses

on implementing and using state of the art

techniques and methods to develop specialized

security technologists for secure software

development, systems/servers administration, as

well as networks and cyber security technology.

Graduates of this program will become IT

professionals who will provide practical IT solutions

in different types of Information Systems, e.g.,

secure information & communication systems.

The program thoroughly integrates knowledge and

practical skills through a balanced delivery of

instructional material. This unique combination

offers the students solid knowledge towards

gaining an accredited Higher Diploma and/or

Bachelor Degree in information security while

receiving specialized training leading to

industrial-recognized qualifications at various

levels of information security. An advantage of this

program is that it is possible for AD Poly graduates

with high achievements and ambitions to pursue

further studies, i.e., Master Degree at local and

international universities. AD Poly will pave the way

to host some training Academies for international IT

companies and organizations, e.g., Oracle, Cisco,

Microsoft, IEEE, and RedHat. These academies will

Oil and gas industries are considered the backbone

of the global energy industry and the UAE is ranked

amongst the world’s major suppliers. Therefore, AD

Poly is developing a state-of-the-art advanced

diploma and applied bachelor program in

Petroleum Engineering Technology in cooperation

with the well-known Emirati strategic industrial

partner Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)

along with some International Oil and Gas Training

Academies. The launch of this program comes as a

result of the Abu Dhabi Economic Visionary Plan

2030. AD Poly aims to establish a cutting-edge

Petroleum Engineering program to qualify National

graduates and prepare them for their technical

careers with major emphasis on the strength of the

know-how and hands-on training skills.

The Petroleum Engineering program will not only

integrate the theoretical knowledge and

on-campus practical training but it will also

strengthen the students’ practical skills by

implementing On-Job-Training (OJT) provided by

the industrial partner ADNOC. This program will

guarantee the graduates a prestigious job towards

gaining an accredited Advanced Diploma and/or

Applied Bachelor in Petroleum Technology, in

addition to securing international certification

(License) in different specializations including: plant

process operation, mechanical technology, control

and instrumentation technology, petroleum

technology, drilling engineering technology, and

HSE.

This is a three-year programme comprising an

initial programme of Aviation fundamentals, EASA

Category ‘B’, with specialisation in either

Aeromechanical or Avionics, plus maintenance

practical training. Successful graduates will be

awarded:

• A GCAA/EASA Certificate for successful

completion of the Aeromechanical Category B1

or Avionics Category B2 Licence Course

• After two years of maintenance experience in an

approved 145 maintenance organizations, and

passing all CAT B exams; graduates may apply for

a GCAA/EASA categories:

Students who successfully complete the three-year

Category ‘B’ programme will also be awarded a

Higher Diploma in Aircraft Engineering

Technologies.

Successful students will have the opportunity to

proceed to a Bachelor Degree in an appropriate

aviation related subject.

This is a two or three-years programme comprising

an initial programme of Aviation fundamentals,

Upper Level Courses in Aviation Maintenance, plus

practical training. Successful graduates will be

• A GCAA/EASA Certificate for successful

completion of the EASA Category ‘A’ Licence

course. Duration of this programme is two years.

• After one year of maintenance experience in an

approved 145 maintenance organizations, and

passing all CAT A exams; graduates may aply for

a GCAA/EASA categories:

• Successful students will also receive a Diploma

in Aircraft Maintenance Technology accredited

by the Ministry of Higher Education and

Scientific Research.

• An additional one-year’s accelerated

programme leads to a Higher Diploma in Aircraft

Maintenance, accredited by the Ministry of

Higher Education and Scientific Research.

• CAT A: Line Maintenance Certifying

Mechanic Licence.

Successful students will have the opportunity to proceed to

a Bachelor Degree in an appropriate aviation related

subject.

• After five years of maintenance experience in an

approved 145 maintenance organizations, and passing

all CAT B exams; graduates may aply for a GCAA/EASA

categories:

• CAT B1: Maintenance Certifying

Mechanical Engineer Licence. Or,

• CAT B2: Maintenance Certifying

Avionics Engineer Licence.

GAL (Global Aerospace Logistics) is an Abu Dhabi

Polytechnic partner offering programmes of study

leading to qualifications in air traffic control.

The Air Traffic Management programme is a two-to

three-years programme comprising a period of

basic instruction, followed by International Civil

Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and GCAA standard

training leading to Air traffic controller

certification.

After a period of two years, successful students

may earn an Air Traffic Control Assistant (ATCA)

certification and validation which permits him/her

to work as ATCA. After successful completion of

the programme, students are sent to an

operational unit for on-the-job training.

Upon successful completion of the two-year

programme, students will be awarded a Diploma

in Air Traffic Management accredited by the

Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research.

In the third year of study, students will be trained

to become Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCO). This

training is a combination of classroom and

simulator training, after which students follow a

period of on-the-job training at an operational

unit. Successful students are awarded a Higher

Diploma in Air Traffic Management accredited by

the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific

Research.

Successful students have the opportunity to

proceed to a Bachelor Degree in an appropriate

aviation-related subject..

The regular admissions requirements for AD Poly

are the following:

•� Students who have graduated after June 2010

are eligible for admission.

•� Science stream applicants should have a

minimum average above 70%.

•� Art stream applicants should have an overall

average above 80% for Aviation or 90% for the

other programs.

•� Applicants must have International English

Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic

band 5.0 or equivalent and be successful in

the tests and interview in English.

(Applicants who do not meet the above two criteria may enroll in the Foundation Program).

•� Applicants must hold UAE nationality with a

valid family book and a current UAE passport

& Emirates ID Card.

•� Applicants must pass an admission

examination and interview.

•� Applicants must produce a recent police

certificate of good conduct.

Application DeadlineTo ensure consideration for admissions,

applications should be submitted immediately.

Diagnostic testing, security clearance, and

interviews will be arranged shortly thereafter.
