Together we learn, lead and achieve.

Building Update Above, I have attached a map that shows the areas that will be fenced off from the start of term 2. The new building is the orange area and the thick black line surrounding this area is the area to be fenced off. It will also house the Builder’s Compound. You will note that entry to the school can only be via Buena Vista Drive or at the back of the school behind the Year 4 portables in Reichelt Ave. The Year 5’s will be able to access their rooms from the side entrances-5C and 5D from Grand Boulevard and 5A and 5B from the side doors near the Gym entrance. Please note there are parking restrictions in Reichelt Ave so it is best to park in McCarthy Grove or across the road in Grand Boulevard.

Our builder will be the Johns Lyng company and our actual Project Manager’s children all attended this school. So he is very much a part of our school community. The asbestos removal will begin on Friday 6 April and we haven’t been given an actual demolition date but we are hopeful it will be in the week beginning Monday 9 April so that most of the noise and chaos will be over by the time we get back. However, I will keep you updated whenever I get some news.

In the last two days the Year 6, Amanda McDonald’s class and Year 2 students have all shifted rooms. In addition, Matt Atkins (ICT Manager) has been moved out of his office and Elise Van Ooi has had to empty the old PE storeroom.

Despite employing removalists and extra Casual Relief Teachers, it has been a mammoth job for all and I really appreciate the efforts of the staff. Term 1 It is hard to believe that we have finished the term and we are about to have a term break. Thank you to each and every one of our students and their families for the excellent work that has been done this term. It is always hard to settle back after the long summer break but all the students have come back and settled into their classes and the work expectations. Judging from the amount of sick children to the office, the end of term has come at the right time.

In saying that, I must thank the staff for another wonderful term. They have worked extremely hard in starting the year, preparing for the Reporting Conferences and participating in various school activities. The ancillary staff have also completed a fantastic term. Their support for the teaching staff makes the school a good place to be.

Finally, I wish everyone connected with Montmorency South a safe and happy holiday and a wonderful Easter. Make sure you enjoy the sleep ins (if you can) and

just the less frenetic pace before Term 2 commences on MONDAY 16th April. There will be no assembly the first week back.

Also, a reminder that there will be no school on the Wednesday April 25.

Student Attitudes To School

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and

quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of

our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the

Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding

of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey

results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

Students from Year 4 to 6, at our school will participate in the survey. The Year 4-6

students will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built

secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing”

your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point

before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Each student will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The

student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and

research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the

response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response

file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all

times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at Victorian schools over

the period Monday 23 April to Friday 1 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to

complete and occurs during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports

are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. We report back on our own data through School

Council, the Annual Report and sometimes in the newsletter.

Last year we used the survey results to plan for more student voice and agency. The result has been the installation of the PALS

group, more student say over student learning goals and increasing ways students can have a voice in the school.

If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit:

Head Lice

This week, we have received enquiries from parents asking why we haven’t or why we don’t call the ‘nit nurse’ when we receive notifications regarding the finding of lice. As adults, you may recall ‘nit nurses’ attending school to conduct inspections when you were school students. This service was phased out in 1993 onwards by the State Government at the time and it is no longer available. Since then, responsibilities for managing head lice are now shared between parents and the school. Parents have primary responsibility for detection and treatment of head lice. Parents are asked to:

Regularly, preferably once a week, check for lice or eggs in the hair of their child and all household members

Notify the school: if their child is affected, and advise when the treatment has commenced.

Not send their children to school with untreated head lice (and exclude their child from school until the day after treatment has commenced, as set out in the Health (Infectious Diseases) Regulations 2001, School Exclusion Table). As a school, we will:

Exercise sensitivity towards students and families with head lice

Maintain student confidentiality to avoid stigmatisation

Support and provide practical treatment and advice to parents. Information is shared via Compass when we need to send the advice regarding active head lice in your child’s year level.

Alert parents as soon as practical of an infestation, particularly the parents of other students in the same class as the affected child/children Tips to assist in the control of head lice: 1. Familiarize yourself with head lice – what they look like and how to treat them. There is a lot of great information available by doing a simple google search 2. Have a discussion with your child about sharing. The sharing of hairbrushes, headbands, helmets, headphones, hoodies, hats etc can all contribute to the spread of head lice. Did you know that lice could live on these items for 1-2 days without a host? 3. If your child has been exposed to lice, placing any bedding, pillows etc that may be contaminated into a tumble dryer for at least 15 minutes is an effective way to kill lice.

4. Keeping long hair tied up may assist. There has been some evidence to suggest that girls are slightly more likely to get them

Happy 108th Birthday Nana

Here are Dylan, Jayden, Connor, Alistair and Lewis Mackay’s Great Grandmother who turned 108 recently!

Nana lives in Scotland and as you can see had a lovely party to celebrate the event. She even received her 8th birthday card from the queen! Who starts sending them at 100. Grandma is becoming blasé about them now. The Mackays have some strong genes there.

MSPS Achievers

Congratulations to Luella Morrow and Ruby McGowan who raised over $1,000 for Stillbirth Foundation Australia from their recent cake stall. Both girls devised the idea and then set about making it happen with support from their local community. We want to say how proud we are of them and how very brilliant we think they are.

Well done to all our cricket and Eltham Wildcats basketball finalists. As you can see below we have had a number of students who play cricket and basketball play finals last week with much success. To all our runners up to our grand finalists. We say – fantastic effort and our congratulations.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Easter break and holidays. To those off on round Australia trips or

adventures to other countries, we wish you a safe journey as well. Have fun and enjoy.

Classroom Clippings – Year 1

The Year 1 Teachers would like to mention how proud we are of all the Year 1 students on their efforts and improvement in their learning this term. They have all showed wonderful enthusiasm and dedication to their learning and we are looking forward to Term 2!

We would like to thank all of the parent helpers that we have in our classrooms. It is a pleasure to have you in our classrooms and we greatly appreciate the extra assistance that you provide.

The Year 1 teachers encourage all students to read over the holidays to assist in the consolidation of what they have learnt over the semester. Sunshine Classics and Mathletics are also excellent ways in which to practise skills learnt. We wish you and your families a safe and relaxing holiday break, and look forward to seeing you all in Term 2!

This week your child will be involved in:

Reading

The students are continuing to work on making predictions before reading a text and using clues on the front cover to support their predictions. They are also practising using lots of different decoding strategies to help them ‘attack’ words they are unsure of.

Writing The students will be continuing to write Narratives with a focus on revising and editing their work to make it better. The students have come up with some interesting stories about robots, giants, talking objects and more!

Mathematics The students have been learning about graphing and data and creating their own class graphs. Creating our class footy graphs has been an absolute favourite as the footy season has begun! Go cats!

Inquiry The students have been reflecting on our STEAM rotations and deepening their understanding of each of the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Spelling The students have been looking at 2-letter codes and have been fantastic code detectives, spotting codes such as sh, ch, th and ow in books, around the classroom and at home.

Classroom Clippings – Year 2

This fortnight the students have been revising and

editing their narrative stories to improve their

story’s structure, punctuation and spelling, as well

as adding adjectives and detail. Once the students

had finished revising and editing, they began

publishing their stories with illustrations and a

front cover. The students will then share their

narrative stories with the class or within small

groups.

In maths this fortnight, the students continued to learn about place value with numbers into the

thousands, they have demonstrated their knowledge of place value with MAB and ordering large

numbers from smallest to largest, as well as completed and created number lines into the thousands.

The students have been building their knowledge of shapes by naming and describing 2D and 3D

shapes. They made 2D and 3D shapes out of toothpicks and playdough and created a 2D shape fox. The

students then recorded the shapes they had used and how many edges/sides and corners/vertices the

shapes have.

This week some Year 2 classes have participated in a maths investigation. This involved the students

reading a show guide and then negotiating and making choices about money. The number concepts of

addition and subtractions were practised when calculating a $60 budget and deciding what to use this

money on.

Last week the students attended the Incursion ‘How

things move’ with Hands on Science. The students

thoroughly enjoyed making predictions,

experimenting and exploring different ways in

which things move! The students looked at things

that float and things that sink, they discussed the

similarities and the differences. The students were

asked to make plasticine (which usually sinks) float

in a tub of water. It was great to see the students

working in teams, experimenting and taking risks

in their learning.

Page 12: Building Update - Montmorency South Primary School · Our builder will be the Johns Lyng company and our actual Project Managers children all attended this school. So he is very much

All groups discovered that they needed to

make a cup/boat like shape so the

plasticine would fill with air, which would

then make it float. The students

experimented with different types of

wheels, made different objects move with

and without wheels and made rockets. The

students loved this hands on incursion and

are all very excited and eager to begin the

unit ‘Full Steam Ahead’.

Classroom Clippings – Year 3 Thank you for a fantastic start to the year. The students have has an absolute ball experiencing all that Year 3 has to offer and have settled in well. This week the students were given the opportunity to learn about Indigenous shelters, how to construct them and their importance in terms of survival. The Year 4 students were experts in teaching this to our students. The students did a great job with their first lot of homework. Homework will continue next term with 10 Mathletics tasks and a reading response expected over a fortnightly period. The tasks are monitored by the teachers on a fortnightly basis. If you have any queries, please see your classroom teacher. Next term the students will have Cross Country, Country and Culture Day, NAPLAN, will continue building their knowledge about the Titanic through the Inquiry unit ‘Full STEAM Ahead’ and revise, consolidate and expand their understanding of key subject areas.

Classroom Clippings – Year 4

In Daily 5 (Reading) we’ve been focussing on summarising. A summary conveys the main points of the text and is different to a re-tell when the events of the story are described in order. When summarising fiction, we have been using the prompt “Somebody Wanted But So Then” to guide our ideas. From reading this story “I Need a Hug” by children’s favourite Aaron Blabey, we came up with this summary:

The echidna wanted a hug but all the animals were scared of him so he felt sad. Then, he met a snake and

got the hug he was after!

In our Work on Words this week we have been exploring homophones and spotting them in our reading. It’s important to know that a homophone is two or more words that sound the same but have different spelling and different meanings. Examples include:

poor, pour, pore and paw buy, by and bye cent, scent, sent your and you’re

Page 14: Building Update - Montmorency South Primary School · Our builder will be the Johns Lyng company and our actual Project Managers children all attended this school. So he is very much

to, two and too meet and meat flower and flour

In Writing, students have been examining the features of persuasive texts and are putting the finishing touches to their house advertisements. It’s been great to see the students keen to make their work as highly persuasive as possible using a mix of rhetorical questions, adjectives, hyperbole and high modality words. Have a look at Alex and Luke’s writing from 4Cs:

In Maths, we are revising and building on our mental and written strategies for Subtraction. Ask your child how they might solve 65-22 without a pencil and paper.

Have a go at solving this worded problem from Sophie in 4B.

If Sophie had 273 apples and Jeff and Mandy ate 131 and Sophie ate 42, how many are left?

The JSC representatives for each class have been elected and we are pleased to announce the Year 4 2018 Representatives are:

4A 4B 4C

Mani Backer and Will Bird Charlotte Forrestal and Lucy Ward Daniel Janev and Thomas Short

Last but not least, we had a great time working together with Tara De Bondi, Sean and John John in the Bush Block making shelters. These shelters are typical of those made in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and are made using a combination of sticks, bark, leaves and clay. 4A had the idea to write a procedural text from this experience so that others can make their own shelter, great stuff!

We wish all of our students and their families a safe, relaxing and fun filled break. We look forward seeing you back on Monday the 16th of April, ready for another great term of learning!

Classroom Clippings – Year 6

As the term comes to a close the Year 6’s have been working hard to finish out the last few weeks on a high. Students have been busy working on Easter activities, including helping out at the Easter Bonnet Parade. They have done an excellent job with their prep buddies and have given them a great start to primary school. In writing we have completed our narratives and they are ready to be published. Next term we will be focussing on information reports to start us off with our inquiry topic. We look forward to some great pieces that inform everyone of what we have learned about “Full STEAM ahead….” During reading we will start Term 2 off with a focus on Authors Purpose and students will discuss and elaborate on what messages are being portrayed by the writer. In Numeracy, we will be working on Formal Algorithms and covering BODMAS to start off term 2, this will set us up for all Measurement and Statistics and Probability topics we will cover for the rest of the year.

Parents and Friends Hello everyone! It has been a very busy term for our group of volunteers. We realise it can be overwhelming to receive ongoing reminders for events or due dates for orders. We are a very big school and organising these events can be quite challenging for our volunteers as well, but thanks to all our volunteers, staff, students and families we are able to organise these events and raise much needed funds for that new oval that will bring so much joy when the building works finish. Every event organised will bring us a bit closer to that goal!

Here is a little run down.

Icy poles Our icy poles have been a huge success this term and we would like to thank Michelle Motshall and her team of helpers. They have organised this special treat for the children every Friday this term. The icy pole team will now have a break and resume back in Term 4.

CBA BANKING Every week a small group of lovely volunteers meet in the staff room to process our children’s school banking deposits – and we need your help! We count money, stamp books, issue rewards, have a laugh and help our kids learn about saving. It usually takes about an hour, and there are NO special Maths skills required!! Some of us have been with the banking team for 5 or 6 years, and in that time the school – and the number of bankbooks to process – has doubled in size. So we would like to set up a rotation so that volunteers can help out every 2 or 3 weeks, and no one gets too overloaded. We currently meet on a Wednesday morning (though this can change depending on volunteers’ availability). If you would like to help out, please email Tash ([email protected]), or just come up to the staff room on a Wednesday morning. It is real joy to help the children earn their rewards by making a weekly deposit, and the school earns a good commission to help with P & F activities, so if you’re sending a little one to Prep this year and wonder what on earth you will do with all that time (ha!), do consider coming to help us out.

Hot Cross Bun Afternoon Tea. We delivered approx. 650 Hot Cross Buns to our hungry students on Friday the 16th of March for afternoon tea. A special thank you to the volunteers that helped with this event. Whether it was sorting and collating orders, banking money, picking up buns or sorting them per class room and delivering them to the classes…We got the job done in record time - Well done all!!

Second Hand Uniform sale. Vanessa Veldman with the help off Michelle Motsthall ran a very successful stall with many parents happy with a bag full of bargains. Thank you ladies for organising this much needed event. Next stall will be end of Term 2.

Hot Cross Bun Drive. Friday 23rd of March was the day for our Hot Cross Bun drive. Our helpers worked hard to send all the orders home and we hope you were able to enjoy your buns with a nice cuppa. Thank you so much to all the volunteers involved. On the last day of term THURSDAY 29st of March the school will be buzzing with excitement with the yearly Easter Bonnet Parade. At the end of the parade we will be drawing our Easter Hamper Raffle. Thanks to everyone for all the donations! A big thank you to Lauren Kerr for collecting, wrapping and preparing all the hampers! Good luck everyone!

Please remember our Fundraising Rarebears Holiday Fun afternoon session for our preps to year 2 students. Siblings also welcome! 12th of April from 4.00pm till 7.00pm. $8.00 a child with $4.00 returned to the school to help us raise funds for our amazing school. The lovely Rarebears team is on standby with some lovely food, treats and drinks for our families to purchase so you do not have to worry about dinner and can relax whilst the kids play!

Thank you to the parents that have already purchased a ticket. If you don’t have a ticket yet just show up and mention you are from MSPS to buy your ticket at the door!

It might be a fantastic opportunity to organise a class catch up during the holidays. If you would like to help spread the word please promote this fun event. It is also a great opportunity to show our lovely Rare bears team we have not forgotten about them after all the road works which certainly was not easy for them.

Rarebears 10 Bridge street Eltham Vic 3095

Term 2 Our lovely team is already preparing some fun Term 2 events with the Mother’s Day stall, Movie Night and a Skaterz afternoon play date coming up. More info to follow in the following Hoot and on Compass.
