C= Cite

• Must use MLA Author’s last name and page # (Smith 567)

E = Explain

• Must show reader why the quote is relevant

• How it supports your thesis/argument

• Answer the questions What is the purpose of the quote? How does it support my main idea? Am I making the connections?

Example ParagraphThe comfort level of the student has also been

shown to be important to student learning. For example, girls are 58% more likely to participate in class if boys are not present (Tonk 42). Girls seem to be more comfortable expressing themselves without guys around. It is unclear, however, why this is the case. It is possible that it is related to the, “disgust many girls feel by the tendency of boys to pass gas in class” (“Academic Flatulence”). Obviously, girls are more comfortable when the class is not stinky, and perhaps are more likely to participate as a result.
