Outline
Enhancing the Normal (Academic) and
Normal (Technical) Course
Enhancing the Normal (Academic)
Programme
New initiatives (effective from 2013)
Enhancing the Normal Course
Normal Course
The Normal course comprises :
Normal (Academic) course
5 years
targeted towards a college/polytechnic
education after the ‘O’ level exams.
Normal (Technical) course
4 years
targeted towards a technical education at ITE
after the ‘N’ level exams.
A number of changes have been introduced to
the Normal Course to enable our students to:
benefit more from their learning experience.
do well in school and progress as far as possible
in their post-secondary education.

Key Enhancements
2. Selected N(A) students
enjoy wider educational
experience by taking
elective modules
1. Selected N(A)
students can skip ‘N’
Level examinations
and progress straight
to Sec 5N(A)
3. Sec 4N(A) students
have the option of
taking more ‘O’
Level subjects
4. Refined promotion
criteria from Sec
4N to 5N
5. New N(A) Through –
train pathways for
eligible Sec 4N(A)
graduates.
6. More resources
to support
teaching of the
N(A) Course
From 2009 Sec 4N(A) cohort
English Language ≤ 5
Mathematics ≤ 5
EL + Maths + Best 3 ≤ 19
Enhancing the Normal (Academic)
Course
Refined Promotion Criteria from
Sec 4NA to Sec 5NA
Refined Promotion Criteria from
Sec 4NA to Sec 5NA
Enhancing the Normal (Academic)
Course
New promotion criteria will better match the
polytechnics’ admission requirements.
Benefits
N(A) students will be able to cope better with
polytechnic education.
Students will be motivated earlier in their
secondary school years to make the effort to
qualify for polytechnic courses.
4NA students can take more ‘O’ level
subjects
Enhancing the Normal (Academic)
Course
Starting with the 2009 4NA cohort.
There is NO LIMIT to the number of ‘O’ level
subjects that 4NA students can offer.
Common subjects offered to students are
Maths and Mother Tongue as other subjects
require more time for coverage of syllabuses.
4NA students can take more ‘O’ level
subjects (Benefits)
Enhancing the Normal (Academic)
Course
Students more capable in certain subjects can
take a few ‘O’ Level subjects at Sec 4NA.
The rest of the ‘O’ Level subjects can be offered
in Sec 5NA.
This helps to spread out the number of ‘O’ Level
papers a student has to take at Sec 5NA and
eases the load for the student.
New Initiatives
• New N(A) Through-train Pathways from
2012.
• The new pathways are namely, the
Polytechnic Foundation Programme
(PFP) and the Direct-Entry-Scheme-to-
Polytechnic (DES-to-Poly)
Programme(DPP)
Polytechnic Foundation Programme
(PFP) • PFP is expected to cater to students in the
top 10% of the Sec 4N(A) cohort.
• Students must obtain ELMAB3 aggregate
of 11 points or less and meet subject-
specific Minimum Entry Requirements
• Bonus points will be awarded for good
CCA grades. These bonus points will be
used in computing the ELMAB3 net
aggregate score for selection and posting
to the Polytechnic FP.
Polytechnic Foundation Programme
(PFP)
• offers a practice-oriented curriculum taught
by polytechnic lecturers, to better prepare
polytechnic-bound N(A) students for entry
into relevant Polytechnic Diploma courses
• Polytechnic FP students are given
provisional places in diploma programmes,
subject to them passing all modules in the
one-year Polytechnic FP.
http://www.polytechnic.edu.sg/pfp/
Direct-Entry-Scheme-to-Polytechnic
(DES-to-Poly) Programme (DPP)
• a pathway for N(A) students who do well in
their ‘N’-Levels to benefit from hands-on and
experiential learning at the ITE by enrolling
in a Higher Nitec programme immediately
after Sec 4
• ELMAB3 aggregate of 19 points or less and
meet subject-specific Minimum Entry
Requirements
Direct-Entry-Scheme-to-Polytechnic
(DES-to-Poly) Programme (DPP)
• Students accepted into the DPP will enrol
into Higher Nitec courses at ITE, and are
subsequently guranteed a place in a
polytechnic diploma course mapped to their
Higher Nitec, subject to them meeting the
Grade Point Average.

Key Enhancements
2. Selected N(T) students
enjoy wider educational
experience by taking
elective modules
1. Selected N(T)
students can offer up
to 2 N(A) subjects
from 2006.

support teaching of
the N(T) course.
Enhancing the Normal Course
Selected N(T) students enjoy wider educational experience by taking Elective Modules (EMs)
Aimed at benefiting upper secondary level N(T)
and N(A) students, EMs could extend and build
on the learning objectives of existing N(T) and
N(A) subjects. They could also introduce
students to a course of study in ITE and/or
expose them to possible career paths.
Enhancing the Normal Course
Selected N(T) and N(A) students enjoy wider educational experience by taking Elective
Modules (EMs)
EMs can be developed by schools in
collaboration with post-secondary institutes like
ITE and the polytechnics or external agencies.
EMs are optional, and are typically 20-30 hour
modules to develop N(T) and N(A) students’
interests and strengths in specific areas.
Enhancing the Normal (Technical)
Course
N(T) students may offer N(A) subjects
Selected N(T) students who are able to offer
subjects at a higher level will be allowed to
take 1 to 2 N(A) subjects from the full range of
N(A) subjects.
The school will assess their capabilities and
offer N(A) subject(s) to those who qualify.
Enhancing the Normal (Technical)
Course
More resources to support teaching of N(T) students
Like the recent enhancements for N(A) course, more
resources will be given to schools with Normal
Course students to help them benefit more from their
learning experience. Such resources are:
Education Associates
