BUKÁS-LOÓB SA DIYÓS • OPEN IN SPIRIT TO GOD

THEME:
Our belief in the Living
Bread compels us to stand
firm in following Jesus. WORD:
Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17,18b;
Ps34; Eph 4:21-32; 5:1-2, 21-
32; Jn 6:53, 60-69 ORDER:
1. “Be subject to one another
out of reverence for
Christ” (Eph 5:21)
2. “Serve the Lord for He is
our God” (Joshua 24:18)
DIRECTION:
1. Persevere and remain
close to the Lord.
2. Respect each other and be kind to one an-
other. REFLECTION:
The Biblical story of the change of leadership
from Moses to Joshua in leading the Israelites to
the Promised Land was one of the greatest ex-
amples of succession in the Bible. Joshua, who
was mentored by Moses for
forty years took over the task of
Moses after his death at Mount
Nebo. Moses was one hundred
twenty years old when he died,
and was not able to enter the
Promised Land. In the first reading, Joshua (110
years old) assembled the Israel-
ites before his death and told
them “Hold fast to the Lord
our God”, and to “fear the Lord
and serve him with all faithful-
ness”. The people under his
command promised to serve
no other gods, but the Lord. In
this present age, we too can ask
ourselves what do we want to
pass on to our children? The best admonition
we can give them is to “hold on to God”, and
exhort them like Joshua said “As for me and my
house we will serve the Lord”. Joshua was an example of an excellent leader.

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:68-69

...must be ready to listen and move quickly on
what God is telling him to do. A leader must
be led by God and seek guidance from Him to
become effective in his work. So, in a Christian
community like BLD, leaders are first anointed
by God before doing the work entrusted to
them. In the discharge of their duties, they seek
guidance from the Word of God to lead them
towards the right direction. The second reading reminds us of Christ’s law
of forgiveness, as taught also in the Gospel
readings (Matthew 6:14-15 and Mark 11:25).
Also, in the Lord’s Prayer we say– “Forgive us
our debts, as we also forgive our debtors”. God
forgives us because of his great mercy. As we
come to understand his love and mercy, we
will want to be like him. Having received for-
giveness, we have to pass it on also to others
who have offended us. We should also do our
part in asking forgiveness from those we have
offended. Those who are not willing to forgive
have not become one with Christ, who was
willing to forgive even those who crucified
him. (Luke 23:34). They have allowed their
resentments to become buried deeply in their
hearts because of their un-forgiveness. Just as children imitate their parents, we
should imitate Christ. His great love for us led
him to sacrifice himself so that we might live.
Our love for each other should be of the same
kind - a love that goes beyond affection to self-
sacrificing. St Paul mentioned also in the read-
ing about submitting to one another. Submit-
ting to another person is an often misunder-
stood concept. In a marriage relationship, both
husband and wife are called to defer to one
another. For the wife, this means willingly re-
specting her husband’s headship in the family.
For the husband, it means putting aside his
own interests in order to care for his wife. Sub-
mission is seldom a problem in homes where
both partners have a strong relationship with
Christ and where each is concerned for the
happiness of the other. In the Gospel, Jesus said to his followers “I tell
you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the
Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no
life in you” (John 6:53). How can Jesus give us
his flesh as bread to eat? To eat living bread
means to accept Christ into our lives and be-
come united with him. We are united with
Christ in two ways – (1) By believing in his
death and resurrection; and (2) by depending
on his teaching for guidance and trusting in
the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was teach-
ing his disciples that his life has to become
their own, but his listeners could not accept
this concept. (Excerpts from Commentary in
the Life Application Bible) Jesus’ words caused many of his followers to
leave him. They may have realized that he
wasn’t going to be the conquering Messiah-
King they expected. His teachings were diffi-
cult to understand and some of his words of-
fended his listeners. In our journey of faith, we
may also be tempted to turn away because Je-
sus’ lessons are difficult to follow. Will our
response be to give up, ignore certain teach-
ings, or reject Christ? Are we also going to
leave? Instead, let us ask the Holy Spirit to
show us what the teachings mean and how we
can apply them in our life. Peter’s answer to Jesus “ Lord, to whom shall
we go”, is for all of us for we sincerely ...see P3

… believe that Jesus alone has the words of
eternal life. Through his body and blood that
we partake in the Eucharist, we are strength-
ened in our faith that indeed it is Jesus alive in
the flesh that we are receiving. His body and
blood give us the strength and the resolve to
continue serving Him thru the work that we
have committed to do in the BLD Community,
that he has graciously made us instruments in
spreading the Good News and in bringing
more people closer to the Lord. So, let us par-
take of the body and blood of the Lord as often
as possible; leave the past behind us and unite
ourselves, and joyfully move forward in serv-
ing the Lord.
PROMISE: “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” (Jn 6:63b)

“This weekend we can truly say that we experienced the Lord working through us. Whether it be healing or revealing, our God sought our deepest wounds to show us that we are #Redeemed through His. We are now sons and daughters of Light.”
The YIDC 2018 hosted by BLD Newark Youth Ministry
in Long Valley NJ last August 10-12, 2018 was a re-
sounding success. Over 200 youths and adult chaper-
ones participated from all over North America, includ-
ing the delegations from BLD Districts Phoenix, Wash-
ington DC, Trenton, Rockland, Albany, Cincinnati, St.
Catharines and Toronto. The retreat’s theme
“REDEEMED” was led by the spiritual director Monsi-
gnor Paul Schetelick and youth facilitators and adult
youth leaders of BLD Newark.
Everyone in attendance can attest to how the talks, the sharings, the Eucharistic celebrations
and worships, and enjoyable fellowships had ignited all of us with the fire of the Holy Spirit. The closing event was capped with the turn-over ceremonies and the announcement of the
next YIDC host - BLD TORONTO DISTRICT YOUTH MINISTRY!!! The selection was ex-
pected and done in accordance with the established cycle in the 12-year history of YIDC since
it was conceptualized in 2006. Everyone was excited to hear
that YIDC 2020 will be coming back to Canada. On behalf of the BLD Youth Ministry, we would like to ex-
tend our utmost appreciation to all our community mem-
bers, including OSG Prayer Groups, for their financial and
morale support and more importantly, their prayers. We look forward to hosting YIDC 2020 here in Toronto! To God be the glory!!

Living together is an art...a patient, beautiful,
fascinating journey. It does not end once you
have won each other’s love. Rather, it is
precisely there where it begins! This journey of every day has
a few rules that can be summed up in three phrases which you
already said, phrases which I have already repeated many
times to families, and which you have al-
ready learned to use among yourselves:
May I, Thank you, and I’m sorry. - Pope Francis

FROM THE BYOP MINISTRY
(BREAKING THE YOKE OF POVERTY MINISTRY)
Let’s all praise and thank the Lord for a successful “ANCOPWALK” last Sun-
day, August 19thh. The honor and glory in this victorious fundraiser belongs
to our Lord alone who made it happen for the benefit of the poorest of the
poor children in the Philippines.
Thank you all for your prayers and participation in this WALK. We are most
especially grateful to the registrants, participants and generous donors.
Through your support and generosity, you became living witnesses of
Christ’s love and compassion. You have taken to heart what God expects from
you which is to help alleviate poverty in the Philippines by providing educa-
tional assistance to impoverished young children and giving them hope for a
brighter future. Thank you for being part of the good cause, for believing in it
and sharing your blessings with those in need.
The initial report indicates that we raised about $19,000 and again, we are the
highest team solicitor for this year.
Brothers and Sisters, with the funds that we raised from this WALK, we will
be able to support at least 40 young poor children in their education for one
year. We are also happy to report that there were 22 BLD members who regis-
tered and participated in the WALK.
Thank you once again and may God bless you and your families always!
Thank You!
