Retired teacher turned antique collectorto show-off his collection on HistoryChannel show, “AMERICAN PICKERS”

St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care-Buycrus Campus, 2450 W. NorthAve. kick-off Black History month in grand style when they recently held the firstIndaba African Ball, which was a fundraiseer for the Indaba Band Shell, thenewly opened entertainment venue located on the Bucyrus Campus grounds.The ball was held in the St. Ann’s atrium, showcasing African-inspired decor.Guests wore African or Afrocentric attire. The evening also featured a fashionshow, starring the guests, and a photo booth providing momentos of the occas-sion. Along with a local vendor selling African clothing, jewelry, there was alsoAfrican and Caribbean-flavored food, fun and music, some of which was sup-plied by Christopher Pipkin of “Christopher’s Project.” There was also a Hall ofHistory Makers, which spotlighted 12 outstanding community leaders of thepast and present. The Indaba Band Shell’s free summer concert series is nowin the planning stages and is slated to begin in June. Indaba is a Swahili wordthat refers to a gathering space to discuss issues affecting the village. On Monday, February 10, retired MPS teacher Maurice Nicholson will be featured onthe History Channel’s popular antiquing show, “American Pickers,” starting at 7p.m.Central Standard Time. Nicholson (shown above and top photos wearing a burgandyred shirt) is pictured with producers and crewmembers from the show who came tohis home to review his myriad collection of antiques he has collected over theyears—from cars to gum and peanut machines—and film the show. Nicholson saidthe AP crew spent 15 hours filming the episode, in which Nicholson haggles with theshow’s star antique archeologists, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, who travel across theUnited States in search of rare artifacts and national treasures they buy from the col-lectors they meet, then sell in their antiques shops or, in some cases, put in theirpersonal collections. Now that he’s retired from teaching, Nicholson said he can takewhat has been a “hobby” and go full-time buying, trading, selling and retoring turn-of-the-century antiques all over the world, attending antique conventions. Nicholsonsaid he is Wisconsin’s (and the Midwest’s) biggest (and probably only) Black antiquecollector.
