North Ave. kick-off Black History month in grand style when they recently held the first Indaba African Ball, which was a fundraiseer for the Indaba Band Shell, the newly opened entertainment venue located on the Bucyrus Campus grounds. The ball was held in the St. Ann’s atrium, showcasing African-inspired decor. Guests wore African or Afrocentric attire. The evening also featured a fashion show, starring the guests, and a photo booth providing momentos of the occas- sion. Along with a local vendor selling African clothing, jewelry, there was also African and Caribbean-flavored food, fun and music, some of which was sup- plied by Christopher Pipkin of “Christopher’s Project.” There was also a Hall of History Makers, which spotlighted 12 outstanding community leaders of the past and present. The Indaba Band Shell’s free summer concert series is now in the planning stages and is slated to begin in June. Indaba is a Swahili word that refers to a gathering space to discuss issues affecting the village. Now that he’s retired from teaching, Nicholson said he can take what has been a “hobby” and go full-time buying, trading, selling and retoring turn-of- the-century antiques all over the world, attending antique conventions.
