BULLDOG BULLETIN MAY 2013 BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE SOUTH AUGUSTA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE SOUTH AUGUSTA 101 YEARS IN 2013 CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE ON : http://www.communitywebs.org/safc/ Not a great start to the season for the A Grade with 3 losses and 1 win after the first 4 games but a good win over Centrals last week will give some of the player’s confidence for the next few games that will be hard against West Augusta and Sollies. One of the positives has been the form of the young Under 18s who have been given opportunities through a good pre-season, names including Marcus Kerin, Caleb Ritter, Sam Maule and Slade Laube. The return of some key players over the next few weeks will further enhance the team with possibly Lee Schmidt, Jess Rivers and Alan Margatich getting on the track soon hopefully. The B’s have also been down on form from last year but also had a great win on the weekend to get back into it and the Under 18s are undefeated despite several of its players moving forward to the A Grade. The club welcomes back Jak Kerin after a stint in Newcastle and he’s currently looking for work if you have any leads, other new players on the senior list include Dillon Stuart, Michael Morse, Eugene Smith, Peter Ross and Craig Rainsford from Roxby, Michael Kieboom from the Flinders Hotel, Adam DiPaolo after a few years off, Patty Willis from Sollies and Don Amos. Players lost include Michael Curley, Josh Nunn and Gary Warren to West’s that brings to a total of 8 South players that have been enticed by a certain coach over to his clubs in the last few years, I reckon he thinks we have some good players here, we must be doing something right !!. Others not on the senior list from 2012 include Elijah Highfold ( Port Adelaide) , Bradley Amos, Jack Menzies, ( College Adelaide) Christian Reid, Brett Jones (Centrals), Ian Brown, Hector Hannes (Coober Pedy), Dwayne Crombie, Corey Finlay retired, Nathan Kerin and Michael Heron, who may get a few games in. Many thanks to Graeme Jones the auctioneer who once again did a great job at the players auction to raise to total pool to $3,700 with over $1800 going back to the football operations. The new trial of having 2 players pooled with 1 netballer worked well with buyers now having a chance for votes even if 1 player is injured. The auction also resulted in nearly $300 to the players end of season trip with the A Grade premiership print and the “ Couttsies Fishing Tours” popular buys on the night. If you have ideas for the next auction see Kean Parrington at the club. Condolences from South Augusta to the Copley, Baluch and Margatich family on the death of Alan Margatich’s grandmother Joy Baluch, a great advocate for Port Augusta and Mayor for 30 years and Councillor for over 40 years. The wake was held at the club and Trevor White would like to thank all those who provided donations towards supper on the day and those who helped. Events in the next month South Golf Day and Vice Presidents Day 23 rd June The prestigious South Augusta Open has seen some great names on the trophy, Kelly Grantham, Peter Trewartha and Peter Huxtable not being amongst them, get along for the 9 hole Ambrose and the chance to wear the Red jacket and free booze for the afternoon. The club will be open from 12 noon and Vice Presidents are invited to join us for a function including BBQ and refreshments with the footy on TV and games in the afternoon. Port Augusta Cup 7 th July Kean has a bus running from the club with the champagne breakfast to start off proceedings then back at the club after the races with a DJ playing your favourite songs and much talk about your winnings. The AFL has commenced the roll out of its community level concussion management guidelines following the introduction of updated guidelines for AFL Clubs prior to the start of the 2013 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. Enhanced guidelines for AFL clubs were implemented before the start of the season based on recommendations from the AFL Medical Officers’ Association (AFLMOA) following last year’s International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich. The newly developed guidelines for AFL Clubs included a number of updates to existing policies as well as the introduction of the concussion substitute. The AFL has also developed a set of enhanced community level guidelines, which include a specific section related to children, to ensure the management of concussion throughout all levels of the game remains best practice. The community level concussion management guidelines are now being introduced to clubs around Australia and the complete resource, including the new Concussion Recognition Tool (CRT) and guidelines for General Practitioners, can be found at: http://www.aflcommunityclub.com.au/index.php?id=66 Colts report Look at the current Budget and you’ll notice that 25 of the 32 names in the 2013 A Grade list played Junior football for Souths so juniors are very important to the future of the club. Under 15’s Report The team has had 2 SGL wins and 1 win and loss in the Port Augusta Competition. The Under 15s have joined the SGL for the first time this year and the boys have enjoyed their first games against Port Pirie teams this year. The team is bonding well and will improve as the year goes on. Best players in the last month include Harry Holland, Trent Ritter, Callen Stuart and Jake Wilson. Many thanks to support staff in Peter Walsh, Caleb Ritter, Daniel Dohnt and Damien Forrest. Thanks Ritts Under 13’s report We’re sitting second behind Westies above the 2 Central sides with 1 win and 1 loss and we play the other Centrals side this weekend. Captains are Will Bolitho and Rowan Irvine and both have been leading from the front at trainings and during games. Daniel and I are teaching the kids a lot of new things but equally importantly were learning lots of new things from the kids. Best highlight is the attack on the ball and tackling from all of the kids. Obviously taught from an early age and really shows. Jake Collins Under 11’s report The Under 11’s have been working on their confidence levels and wearing the Bulldog guernsey with pride. Both Red and White have had wins over the past week against Central Red and West Augusta. The standard of games are very high with heaps of speed and aggressive tackling. Cheers Kieron Keeler Under 9s’ report The Under 9's have started the season with 2 losses, but the boys have gradually improved between the games. The Under 9's have represented the club well, with at least 8 boys playing under 11's each week, with 3 of those boys Zac Keeler, Darcy Fuller (Bulldog of the Day - Round 2) & Dalton Gide playing just under 11's. Standout players in the first 2 games for the under 9's has been Isaac Wayne, Heath Green, John Weimer & Blake Hartmann to name a few. Mini-league has also begun, with the mini's getting a good win in their first game. Ryan Struck Southies playing at a higher level

Lee Willcock and his son Clay travelled to Melbourne recently and were able to catch up with Jared Rivers at the Geelong, Essendon match. Jared who is out with injury was more than happy to catch up and we hope he’s on the track soon after 4-5 weeks off with a knee injury.

Jared signing Clays Guernsey 2 weeks ago.

Congratulation to Cameron Ortlepp, ex South Augusta Under 15s premiership player for playing in Norwood’s A Grade Basketball team last weekend and his sister Taylor who has made the Australian Under 17s Basketball training squad for Oceania games in Melbourne, good luck Taylor we hope you make the team. Connor Rozee is currently playing in the Under 13s development squad at North Adelaide. The photo is the coin toss against Glenelg, Connor was captain for the night. They won 7 goals 7 points to Glenelg 5 goals 3 points, Connor played Ruck Rover most of the night and Centre Half Fwd for a while. Paige Rozee is playing netball for Campbelltown Comets in the Golden Grove comp in U17 Div 1 which looks like a very good standard.

BILLY’S CORNER

• Who is the well known Southy who was chastised by umpires for walking across the oval at quarter time to get to the players huddle. He should know the new rules that do not allow this to happen as all spectators need to walk around the no go zone. Frankly we think he needs to get up with the guidelines.

• Its pretty rough when you have to take off to England to avoid paying your betting debts but that’s exactly what Kelly Grantham has done after some recent Collingwood losses, Strawbs will catch up with him when he’s back don’t you worry.

• There was certainly some reluctance from buyers at the last players auction when “ Couttsy’s fishing tours” came up for bidding. The last time Couttsy ventured to the high seas, he and his first mate Buck Everett were marooned in a small dam of shallow water for 4 hours after plans to conquer the fish the night before and not reading the tide times, after many hours of blaming each other they managed to get a few squid and the promise to lift their standards on the next venture.

• Grand finals DVD’s are now available with vision and sound combined, see Harry Waterworth if you want a copy at $5 each.
