    LUKE 1:46-55 (NRSV)

46And Mary said, My soul magnies

the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in

God my Savior, 48for he has looked with

favor on the lowliness of his servant.

Surely, from now on all generaons will

call me blessed; 49for the Mighty One

has done great things for me,

and holy is his name. 50His mercy is for

those who fear him from generaon to

    generaon. 51He has shown strength

with his arm; he has scaered theproud in the thoughts of their hearts.52He has brought down the powerful

from their thrones, and lied up the

lowly; 53he has lled the hungry with

good things, and sent the rich away

empty. 54He has helped his servant

Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,55according to the promise he made to

our ancestors, to Abraham and to his

    descendants forever.

    LUKE 1:46-55 (The Message)

46-55And Mary said, Im bursng with

    God-news; Im dancing the song

of my Savior God. God took one

good look at me, and look what

    happenedIm the most fortunate

woman on earth! What God has

done for me will never be forgoen,

the God whose very name is holy,

set apart from all others. His mercy

ows in wave aer wave on those

who are in awe before him. He baredhis arm and showed his strength,

    scaered the blung braggarts. He

knocked tyrants o their high horses,

pulled vicms out of the mud. The

    starving poor sat down to a banquet;

the callous rich were le out in the

cold. He embraced his chosen child,

Israel; he remembered and piled on

the mercies, piled them high. Its

    exactly what he promised, beginning

with Abraham and right up to now.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS?

    A RENEWAL OF EXPECTATION

Does a feeling of expectaon have to be found only in ny tots with their eyes all

aglow or can it be found in all of us? Advent is a me of receiving good news and

God wants us to nd some newness. It is not that Gods love was absent from human

life before the me of Jesus coming. The ancient Psalm writer spoke again and again

about Gods steadfast love. Jesus brought it in a new way with personal power.

What would it take to rediscover this newness? Actually, that is what expectaon is

all about: an awareness that a loving God wants to come to each of us in a new way.

Several arsts have painted pictures of Jesus, Knocking at the Door. In Advent, that

knocking is parcularly loud. How do we open the door?

Probably, we should begin by realizing that we already have many blessings from

God. Living within our homes, or our world, we take a lot of things for granted:

shelter from the cold, food to eat, friends and family. We have abilies to cope

with most of the problems that arise. Realizing this and enjoying what we already

have enables us to discover and appreciate new things. The secret of this feelingis thankfulness. It is a coincidence, but noteworthy, that Thanksgiving Day comes

before Christmas. With a thankful spirit, we welcome Gods new gi.

When we remember that life, itself, is Gods gi, we are open to expect and receive

more. Perhaps, this season will help you to see people around you in a new and

more loving way. Perhaps your vocaon and your daily tasks will open up new waysof being creave. Art or music, hobbies or exercise may provide energizing renewal.

Fresh spiritual gis come down the chimney and are scaered around the Christmas

    tree.

How we need to be open to Gods spirit, looking up expectantly! As Jesus said, Ask

and it will be given you; seek and you will nd, knock and it will be opened to you.(Mahew 7:7)
