— Francois Aucamp [email protected] Bulletin©9119lhd140725wb WINTER SALE ON ALL DRESS FABRICS Enquires?

There can be no doubt, Tzaneen remains the breeding ground for Limpopo’s beauties. In this edition, there will be no smirking, egotistical midget called Richard Hammond, with a very out dated choker around his neck, drooling over the latest Porsche, which nearly nobody can aff ord in this, prime-rate-has-just-gone-up-again-twenty-fi ve-basis-points Godforsaken country!

There will be no middle aged James May who has his shirts made by his nearly blind mother, jerseys knitt ed by the Salvation Army and his hair done by his completely blind and possibly already dead grandmother, trying to drive around in an outdated Volvo Estate.

And, by the grace of God, there will be no super bellied, grey haired Jeremy Clarkson, laughing at his own att empted humour and gett ing stuck, again, in an even darker shade of grey, wet and misty paddock, somewhere in Her Majesty’s back yard, in an ever so ageing and typically oil leaking Range Rover. So help us!

There will also not be any star, bright or dim, driving around our track in a reasonably priced car. That would not be because this newspaper, or even this country, does not have any stars, again, bright or dim. We have

plenty! It would simply be because this country does not have any reasonably priced cars!

Which brings us to... the news! Despite all his att empts to verify and

substantiate this news by searching available printed and electronic literature, the company involved seems to have been very diligent at removing all evidence of what is about to be re-announced. Therefore the news could possibly be made off as hearsay, although the author will claim that “blah-blah-blah”!

Research has shown that there are all kinds of prospective car buyers. For example, there are those who always buy from the same manufacturer, either because they are satisfi ed with the product and service or they are loyal or they are inherently resistant to change. Or, for example, there are those who cannot resist new technology, and need to have the most modern or fl ashy vehicle — especially if the Jones’s have it. Then there are those sensible few, who actually look at their need, the price, safety, the mileage and other important specifi cations.

What interested the author, however, was to know which car those prospective car buyers, who needed a car, had the money to buy a car, but did not have the faintest idea what to buy, actually bought. The above mentioned, diligently removed evidence, did in fact, prove it to be a white car! But not any white car! A white car from a Japanese manufacturer, who used to claim that, “Alles loop reg, altyd reg”!

The conclusion of the research was then, in the author’s mind, that those who know nothing about cars, and are indecisive about which car to buy, will have so much trouble

with their cars, they will “altyd loop”!And on that bomb shell, it is time to end, but not before we have introduced the author! Some say, he once made Chuck

Norris cry! Some say, he regularly makes his readers cry! Some say, he

doesn’t know what he is blabbering about! Some said, on the last page of this news paper, that he could even be a girl, but all we know is, he is called… The Vlieg!

Another daylight attack has been made on a house belonging to an Indian family in Tza-neen’s King Edward Street within two weeks.

However, nothing was robbed, nobody was injured and the robbers fled empty handed.

The owner of the premises at 20 King Ed-ward Street, Mr Ishag Gorakh, said his son, Suhail, left the house just before 12:00 to attend the regular Friday prayer meeting at the local Mosque in Agatha Street, when the culprits slipped through the sliding gate be-hind him.

Personnel in the residence were immedi-ately told to lock up all entrances to the house. After the in-truders could make no entry, they fled on foot. The police was called and their response was re-markably fast, but the attackers were gone by then.

Gorakh said the perpetrators were obviously looking for money, as he was part of a big or-ganisation handling lots of cash. “We never carry cash home.”

The previous in-cident happened just down the road from No 20, where the robbers (prob-ably from the same crowd) scored R90 and two cell phones from a domestic worker two weeks ago. The flat is also occupied by Indian people working for the same company.

Gorakh agreed that there was an increase in people frequenting the area with stolen super-market trolleys and cell phones work-ing overtime. “This quiet and peaceful residential area of Tzaneen is develop-ing into a hot spot for criminals.”

Manhunt for suspectsMaake police have launched a manhunt for four armed dangerous criminals who att acked and robbed a shop owner and his assistant at gun point at Mhangweni village. It is believed that before running away with an undisclosed amount of money, cigarett es and airtime vouchers, the suspects stabbed two customers — including the shop owner. According to police residents chased aft er one of the suspects who got knocked over by a vehicle, but continued running despite sustaining an injury. The police have not yet traced the suspects. However, anyone with information about the suspects’ whereabouts is urged to immediately contact Lt Col Cecil Machimana on 072 532

1725 or any police station.

Murder suspect arrestedTzaneen police have arrested a 35-year-old Zimbabwean murder suspect in connection with an unknown man who was found dead in Agatha Street, Tzaneen. It is alleged that the suspect was involved in a fi ght with the deceased before stabbing him with a sharp object. Police have not established the motive for the stabbing. The suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.

More talk, less actionThe SAPS in Tzaneen has initiated stakeholder meetings since the beginning of the year, with the aim of tackling criminal activities. The recent meeting with deputy provincial commissioner Maj Gen Benny Ntlemeza was also meant to tackle crime in Tzaneen and surrounding areas. However, the latest spate of housebreakings and theft in King Edward Street tells the opposite of tackling crime. In one incident police allegedly att ended a crime scene without a docket to take a statement from a victim of crime. When approached for

comment about the latest situation of crime in Tzaneen police spokesman Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said that “crime in Tzaneen is stable at the moment”. People say it is hard to understand how crime could be “stable at the moment”, when 99 more criminal suspects from the nearby areas got arrested within the past week. People also say it is not clear what is meant by “stable” and the SAPS shouldn’t use or hide behind terminology that doesn’t make sense.

Thugs behind barsPolice apprehended 22 thugs who had compromised other people’s safety in the Ritavi area over the past week. Thirteen people involved in public drinking, att empted murder, housebreaking and theft were also put behind bars. Nine people were arrested for arson, assault and malicious damage to property.

Reckless motorists caughtOver the past week Tzaneen police caught 22 motorists for disobeying the safety of other road users, and 77 more for their off ensive behaviour. Police caught another 46 people involved in traffi c off ences, shoplift ing,

fraud, assault, crimen injuria, housebreaking and theft . At least seventeen people suspected of child neglect, murder, illegal gambling, possessing dangerous weapons, malicious damage to property and suspected stolen property were arrested. Elsewhere 36 perpetrators were held for prostitution, drinking in public, liquor off ences and possessing counterfeit goods.

Safeguard childrenTzaneen police urge members of the public to safeguard their children while shopping. This comes aft er a couple aged 35 and 45 was arrested on Saturday aft er leaving and neglecting their two-month-old toddler in a locked vehicle in Tzaneng Mall’s parking area. It is alleged that a security guard on watch alerted the police. The suspects were traced and arrested in a shop in the mall. The suspects briefl y appeared on Monday in a Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court. They were reportedly released on a warning. “Members of the public are warned that child neglect is a punishable criminal off ence and perpetrators will face the law,” said police spokesman Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

In good companyWe are happy to fi nd ourselves in good company. In fact, the company is excellent — none less than retired judge and former Gauteng judge president Bernard Ngoepe, a son of Limpopo who achieved so much and became respected for his exemplary conduct as a citizen and a senior judge.

We are regularly accused by local goverment institutions, especially the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, of waisting energy fi ghting against small matt ers like hawkers, collapsing infrastructure, lack of discipline and an absence of political will to act against people who claim that they are entitled to whatever they deem fi t to do.

Ngoepe last week added his voice to the outcry against those who att empt to under-mine the public protector. In his speech, he quistioned why SA, with its acclaimed constitution, continued to suff er high lev-els of inequality, crime, corruption and a disregard for other people’s property.

“If we, indeed, do have the best constitution in the world, how come somebody just fi nds your piece of land and puts up a shack there and says: ‘Unless you off er me alternative accommodation, I am not moving’?” He said that during a recent visit to his home town of Polokwane, he could not fi nd parking because the parking bays had been taken over by street vendors.

“People think the constitution gives them rights without limitations; they think it means that you must get everything for nothing. You don’t pay for water, you must not pay for electricity. It cannot mean that,” he said.

Exactly, we say.

Oor eerste en heel eerste: as atleet A

Hoekom moet hy iets meer as eerste wees?

— Redakteur

Do as you wishConcerned Senior Citizen from Haenertsburg writes by e-mail: In the land of South Africa there are many diff erent claims.

The Reed family—founders of this well-known and highly respected pioneers of Limpopo’s Lowveld — trekked down steep slopes by ox wagon from Lydenburg in Mpu-malanga to the Mopani area in 1892. They sett led on the farm Mooihoek in Mooketsi which is still in the family today.

Mr Bisse (pronounced Bis) Reed was born at Elim hospital in 1940. He was the only son and had six older sisters. He recounts his life with the help of his wife Denise. Speaking from their home at Macadamia Retirement Village in Tzaneen Bisse says that they grew carnations and statice at Mooihoek. Early in the morning they would cut the fl owers, put them in buckets and take them to the siding at Brandboontjies in Mooketsi, to be taken

to the Johannesburg market. Bisse’s school-ing was at the College of the Litt le Flower in Polokwane.

His father turned to tomatoes and the big-gest, most scented pawpaws loaded with pips. Bisse eventually took over Mooihoek from his father. Bisse loved adventurous sport of any kind and he took up fl ying, got his pilot’s licence and had his own Piper Cherokee 180.

Denise was born in Krugersdorp (Gauteng) but grew up outside Polokwane. She att ended St Pius Convent in what has since become the capital of Limpopo. Her matric dance partner couldn’t make it and Bisse was her blind date for the evening. They had a lovely evening — but Bisse had a girlfriend at the time!

Bisse and Denise didn’t see each other for another two years. One morning he arrived on her parents’ doorstep. Denise was hardly dressed when her sister came rushing in to tell her who was calling. They dated and got married at the Catholic Cathedral in Polok-wane and have been together ever since (for 53 years). Once married, Denise took over all the administrative farm work so that Bisse could be free to farm.

A heavy drought set in and the borehole wa-ter wasn’t enough. Reed, a brilliant business-man, saw the writing on the wall and changed track. He stopped the pawpaws and then the

tomatoes and turned to Brahman catt le and poultry. The couple went to Texas in Amer-ica several times to buy catt le from various breeders. The Brahmans were extremely popular and an up and coming breed. There were more grey Brahmans so Reed decided to go for something diff erent and opted for the red Brahmans. He built it up into a brilliant stud of 150 pedigreed Brahmans. They took the best ones to shows around the country. At the same time, the Reed couple was pro-ducing eggs called Best Hen Eggs. They had 18,000 laying hens. There were three bakkies with drivers that delivered eggs throughout the Province.

Reed phased out the eggs to al-low smaller farmers into the mar-ket and entered the then lucrative prickly pear market. By this stage their eldest, Doug, had fi nished his veterinary science degree and joined them on Mooihoek. The couple had al-ready made trips to Israel and Mexi-co to investigate the prickly pear market.

Reed then sold all the Brah-mans and went in for Nguni catt le. Brahman had become

very popular and there were huge costs involved

in showing the catt le. Nguni are beautiful, indigenous and har-

dy. The Reeds moved to Macadamia Retirement

Village eleven years ago and their son now has a top Nguni stud. The couple also has two daughters, one in Kimberley and the other in Cape Town, and ten grandchildren.

Watching farming trends

Our area is home to some of the most interest-ing and fascinating people who can tell gripping stories about the past — and how they landed in this part of the world. Mr Bisse Reed and his wife Denise are two such people. Bulletin’s Sue Boor visited the Reeds in their “new” home in the Macadamia Retirement Village in Tzaneen, where they opened their hearts and minds to her and told her about their migration to our area. Over the past year we have introduced 41 interesting settler families of Mopani in an ex-clusive series about the “architects” of Mopani. We stopped the series a few weeks ago, but we will continue to introduce interesting people of early days from time to time. And we still salute

them as pioneers of the Lowveld.

Despite improving gravel roads during funerals, GTM grader operators are doing shoddy (incomplete) work by ignoring instructions oof supervisors.Residents in most of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s 125 villages are crying foul on what they call incomplete work done by grader drivers who are oft en sent to upgrade their roads.

People say they are oft en told by

grader drivers that they feared losing their jobs if the machines break down. It is alleged that the graders are working without being monitored and that instead of making the roads accessible for motorists, they leave rocks and debris in the roads.

Residents have now spoken to the GTM to ensure that during their programme of upgrading streets in villages, they must ensure that

whoever will be working on the projects must be strictly monitored.

GTM Spokesperson Neville Ndlala said they were not aware of the situation and he promised that they would as from now make sure that grader operators are strictly monitored, to ensure that they do their jobs to the best of their abilities.

On its fi nal day of school for the quarter, Letaba School for the Disabled honoured its athletes for suc-cessfully participating in the 2014 Nedbank National Champion-ships for the Physi-cally Disabled. Their medals and certifi cates were offi cially handed to them during a short celebration.

Representing Lim-popo with four other schools in the prov-ince, the young ath-letes travelled to the Western Cape earlier this year and came back with a total of

eleven medals: one bronze, two silver and eight gold.

Among the learners, Rachel Selopyane (21) — an alumni of the school — and Mahl-atsi Malatji (16) were also given their special awards from the Lim-popo Department of Sports, Art and Rec-reation. These awards were for their excellent performances in athlet-ics during the year. The department crowned the learners sports-woman and sportsman of the year respectively.

last year, Dzunisani Nyoni (19) was awarded R10 000 by his for-mer school, DZJ Mtebula High School, in Nkowankowa. Every year, DZJ Mtebula High School awards R10 000 to matric learn-ers who achieve at least six dis-tinctions in their fi nal results.

Nyoni, who currently studies Actuarial Science at the Uni-versity of Cape Town, achieved distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Geography, CAT and Xitsonga Home Language and was the top learner in Nkowankowa Cir-cuit’s Class of 2013.

He decided to study Actuarial

Science because, said he, “there is a shortage of black actuaries in the country.”

The nineteen-year-old, who added that he chose the Univer-sity of Cape Town because it is the best university in the coun-try, says aft er his family greatly supported him through his stud-ies, he plans on fi rst doing some-thing nice for them with the money that he will earn.

His advice to the class of 2014 is that what works best is to work consistently, even when it is not easy. “Working smart is about gradual consistent work. They should not wait to binge-study the day before the exam,” he said.

Stanford Lake College took a group of schools on another Kilimanjaro expedition. Mr Neil Haarhoff (the expedition leader) was joined by Riaan and Kirsten Eastes, Sarah Pogrund, Nicola Bourdillon, Jean du Toit, Michael van Zyl and Richard Southwood.

A huge amount of training was done to make sure that the group was well prepared for this once in a lifetime challenge! In April, they undertook an expedition in the Southern Drakensberg and got to spend some time in

very inclement weather at an altitude of 3 200 m above sea-level. This was excellent prepa-ration for the Kilimanjaro expedition.

The group of adventurers left SA for Kili-manjaro International Airport in Tanzania on 28 June and started the climb the fol-lowing day via the Lemosho route. When they arrived at Kilimanjaro International, they were missing three luggage bags. This was a problem, as the climb was to begin the next day and the bags contained all their technical gear! The lost bags were lo-cated early the next morning.

The climb started on the Western side of the mountain, with the fi rst camp at Mt. Mbikwa (or Big tree). This was still in the rain forest and was a really nice site. Heading out of the rain forest into the heather and moorland terrain to the camp at Shira 2 (3 600m) was a very long day’s trek! On Day 3 the route took the party up to Lawa towers (4 600 m). Day 4 the assault of the infamous Baranco wall!

Day 5: This was a short day as well and Barafu camp (4 600 m) was reached just be-

fore lunch. The environment here is Alpine desert; nothing but sand and volcanic rock! Then the excit-ing “Summit” day was next! The guides woke everyone at 23:00 and aft er some tea and biscuits, the long walk to the summit be-gan at midnight. It was very cold and fi nally aft er more than six hours (stopping every hour for a quick break to eat and drink) the group arrived at Stella point! There, they witnessed the most magnifi cent sunrise ever! Some members of the party were af-fected by the altitude at this stage — not surprising, as this was now at 5 739 m above sea-level.

The fi nal slog was to walk 750 m in distance and climb 150 m in altitude to get to the summit! At 07:20 on 4 July the whole group conquered the summit! An hour was spent taking photos and feeling absolutely elated by their

achievement. It was now downhill all the way — fi rst with lunch at the previous night’s camp and then on to the last campsite on the mountain at (3 100 m). This was an extremely tiring but exhilarating 17 hour day!

The last day was spent trekking back through the rain forest to the Park gate where the famous certifi cates of summit-ing Kilimanjaro were received. As part of a small add-on ‘outreach’ gesture, the group went to visit the lead guide at his village the next day. There they planted four fruit trees in his friendship garden.

Eco Club Talk on Edible Insects

The eating of insects has been an integral part of African culture through the ages. Insects are a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fats; they are not just a source of nutrition in times of food scarcity, but form an important part of traditional diets.

Bronwyn Egan has recently completed her Ph D on the cultural and economic importance of edible insects in the Blouberg area. She identifi ed 29 species of insects eaten in the region; the best-known of which is the mopane worm, actually the caterpillar of an Emperor moth. She will tell us about these and other delicacies, including termites, grasshoppers and stinkbugs (yes, really!) This promises to be a fascinating topic; we will have some samples available for tasting ;-) Bronwyn obtained a BSc Honours

degree in Zoology at the University of the Witwatersrand and a Masters degree at the University of Port Elizabeth. Aft er working in the eastern Cape for ten years, Bronwyn and her herpetologist husband Vincent, moved to Limpopo. She is currently the curator of the Larry Leach Herbarium, Department of Biodiversity, University of Limpopo; and lives in Haenertsburg.

The talk will be held at the Macadamia Community Centre at 18:30 today (25 July). Tea and coff ee will be served. Visitors are most welcome and pay the usual small fee of R20. Contact Marianne McKenzie on 082 835 4185 for further information.

So maak Letsitele

Vanjaar se tema is “Somerkersfees”.

It’s time to get into shape, summer is around the

corner!

Eina, nog erger as Zimbabwe 2013!

Limpopo in Trurat

Jonélle was die jongste skeidsregter wat by

die toernooi ingespan is.Charmaine Beetge Ntsuku MakalanaPrecious Mhlari, Tsholofelo Bulala and Khanyisa Chawane.
