bars of die duiwel los raak!

The Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) in Letsitele recently had too few hands to help with the many orphaned baby vervet mon-keys. Three volunteers had stomach prob-lems and were therefore not allowed to han-dle the babies. In the fi rst few weeks of life these litt le primates are very susceptible to human ailments.

So I was roped in to help care for nine tiny babies over Christmas. It was an exhausting but very rewarding experience and an in-sight into the Foundation’s philosophy and never-ending work.

The VMF directors, Mr Dave du Toit and his wife Josie, run the sanctuary on vegan lines. Volunteers, from all over the world, pay to come and look aft er and learn about vervet monkeys. The living is basic. There are wooden cabins with simple furniture and no electricity. There’s a communal wash-room with, as Josie so sweetly describes the long drop, a few eco-toilets.

There’s a separate communal area where volunteers can relax and cook and an open-plan dining room area. The history of the VMF is writt en on the dining room columns and walls.

The volunteers stay and help anything from a few weeks to a few months. Some are permanent staff ers who have qualifi cations in biology, veterinary fi elds or conservation.

There were four volunteers with the babies. The nursery is separate from all the other en-closures. My shift began aft er an early break-fast and lasted until 16:00 with a short break for lunch. The heat was oppressive but all att ention was focused on the babies.

As the babies are so delicate, volunteers are not permitt ed to wear any chemicals such as sunscreen, perfume, mosquito repellants or

any other kind of creams. Although so very cute, volunteers were instructed not to kiss the babies. Two of the primates had devel-oped mouth thrush which can sometimes be att ributed to human kissing.

Each baby has its own small bott le and gets milk every 15 minutes. Each bott le contains 30 ml and has to be fi nished within four hours. Thereaft er the milk goes off and the babies get ill. Some babies had diarrhea or other prob-lems and had added nutrients in their milk. Each baby has a name. In fact all 500 odd vervets at the VMF have names. Amongst the babies was one very cute male samango mon-key named Mango. Samangos are more intel-ligent than vervets and Mango really didn’t fancy playing much with the vervets.

The babies also cry for their mothers. That’s where the volunteers wrap them in a blan-

ket, soothingly rub their bodies and noses and rock them to sleep.

The babies nap and when awake are very active. They climb all over the volunteers, wee-ing and poo-ing. Fortunately their ex-pulsions don’t smell and there’s toilet paper to clean up their messes. The VMF does not put the babies in nappies as this results in chaffi ng and sometimes bleeding. They cling to the volunteers’ hair and bodies. A volun-teer goes to sickbay, up a litt le hill, and pre-pares more milk every four hours. There is drinking water as well as rehydration fl uids and chopped up vegetables. Every time a baby drinks, eats, moves, sleeps, it’s noted.

Deebo, a male, was found abandoned on a farm, severely dehydrated and malnour-ished. Despite all the care and medical att en-tion Deebo passed away in Josie’s arms on New Year’s Day. It was a huge shock to all as the VMF is renowned for its orphan care and this is the fi rst time an orphan has been lost on Josie’s watch.

The next stage is drinking on their own from the bott le. Once that’s been mastered it’s off to another cage and each baby is al-located a foster mother. Vervet females will look aft er babies that are not their own. This introduction is also monitored with a volun-teer seated outside the cage observing, mak-ing notes and seeing that the bott les are fi lled every four hours with milk and nutrients.

These cages are adjacent to the actual sanc-tuary cages and the curious vervets come and touch the babies through the fence. Eventu-ally the babies with their foster mothers are placed into one of the bigger enclosures. The integration is then complete.

The young lady who survived a shark attack this past festive season, is back home and recovering well. Tamsin Scott (23) from Letsitele, told Bulletin this week that she is feel-ing positive about her ordeal and that she has faith in her speedy re-covery.

“I still get sharp pains in my fore-arms, wrist and hands at times but it is not at all unbearable,” she said with a giggle. “Our surgeon did such an excellent job that I don’t think people will believe my story in the years to come, as I doubt I will have any scars as proof!”

The Scott family arrived back home in Letsitele on Monday, after spend-ing most of their December holiday at Mpande Bay on the KZN Wild Coast. Tamsin was in waist-deep water at a private beach when a Bullshark attacked her, severing the tendons and nerve endings in both her arms, rendering them almost en-tirely useless.

She was eventually rushed to Mill-park Hospital in Johannesburg, where she spent twelve days in high care and underwent four surgeries.

Although not having the use of her hands has brought with it some chal-lenges, Tamsin has adapted, impro-vised and overcome those obstacles like a champion.

“There are a few things that we take for granted daily, such as send-ing text messages or making phone calls or even something seemingly insignificant such as scratching an

itch, which has suddenly become a challenge to her,” explained mom Tessa Scott. “But she is a feisty one and has refused to let that affect her ever positive and upbeat mood.”

She has found ways to stay in

touch with friends over whatsapp by replacing text messages with voicenotes and has enabled the voice commands on her phone and tablet allowing for hands-free use.

“I have also managed to handle cups and other objects with my arms and have found a straw to be a most useful tool.”

In regards to the attack itself, Tam-sin said she has no bad memories or

nightmares despite fearing that she would. “I thought that this would haunt me later, but I am not afraid to talk about it and although I do sometimes play the attack back in my mind, it has not affected me in the slightest — except for not really wanting to go back into the ocean anytime soon.

“I think that it may have something to do with a very special talisman I received from a close family friend too.”

A friend of her father had brought her a necklace with a dolphin charm as a gift from Mauritius which, ac-cording to legend, symbolises cour-age and strength after a traumatic event. “It is a very special gesture to me and I wear it every day as a re-minder.”

A final year student at the Univer-sity of Stellenbosch where she is completing her B Com Accounting degree, Tamsin will have to make arrangements with the universi-ty to continue studying via corre-spondence, until she has completely healed. She will be travelling there this month to do so.

“My friends and family have all been very supportive which has helped to keep me upbeat — and I would like to thank the community for the tremendous response and the many positive messages and prayers I received. It is a heart warming ex-perience.”

Beurtwater moet boere nou deurtrek

Droogte laat vlakvarke vlugTzaneen Dam’s water level continues to drop as the SA Weather Service anticipates the first rainfall to come only in March. Currently the level is down to 39,9% which is 54% lower than the at the end of last year, when the level was reported to be at 78,3%.

“I wish we could make it rain, but the reality is that nobody can and so the best we can do from the depart-ment’s side, is to continue working with local munic-ipalities and stand at the ready to counter emergency situations if or when they arise,” said Mr Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanita-tion. “The Mopani District is one of the more negatively affected areas, especially in Limpopo. If good rain comes late, and if the rain is not sufficient — and I am not even sure at this stage exactly what sufficient would mean in our current dire situation — it will not really create much

run off to create sufficient water in boreholes, dams and so on. There will not be enough surface water to build up the water levels.”

It is not just Tzaneen Dam that is feeling the brunt of the drought, Ebenezer has dropped from 95,5% in 2015 to just under 78%. Dap Naude dropped from 89,6% to 80%.

“Our only solace will be rain before winter. The mu-nicipalities will inform us of potential emergency sit-uations which will then in turn determine the type of action we would take as a counter measure. The very best we can do is to assist with the supply of water for consumption to affected areas through the use of water tankers,” added Ratau. “We all need to pray for rain. And pray that our prayers are heard.”

President Jacob Zuma has called on families, neighbours, government and communities to sup-port all the matrics who sat for the examinations, particularly those who failed the examinations.

“Support those who failed; they must never think this is the end of the road because it isn’t. I want to encourage them to explore the many opportu-nities provided which include rewriting at various rewriting centres across the country, as well as joining the vocational training route, thereby add-

ing to much needed technical skills,” he said.He also urged all schools, supported by the De-

partment of Basic Education, to assist young peo-ple in securing opportunities to build their lives and to assure them that failure does not mean there is no future — but instead they should be encouraged to use the temporary setback to open up more doors for their personal development.

Help is available for pupils at the Basic Educa-tion toll-free number 0800 202 933.

The Department will also launch a Second Chance Matric Pro-gramme which is in-tended to provide sup-port to pupils who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certifi -cate (NSC) and thereby meeting the goals of the National Development Plan by increasing pupil retention. The catego-ries of pupils who will be covered are those who qualify to write Supple-mentary Examinations for a maximum of two subjects, progressed pupils who pursue mul-tiple opportunities to complete the NSC, and those who failed to meet the requirements of the NSC in 2015.

The Department of Social Development has also made availa-ble to the Matric Class of 2015 a 24-hour call centre for people to receive counselling by social workers.

Pupils can call 0800 428 428 to speak to a social worker for counselling (toll free). They can also request a social worker to con-tact them by dialling *120*7867# (free) from any cell phone.

Andrea Devenish gaan Bedryfsingenieurswese

Th ere are always options, even aft er bad resultsMany thousands of Grade 12 pupils now have to face the reality that things have not worked out the way they wanted them to in terms of their results — and with this disappointment will come the uncertainty of how to proceed in 2016. According to education ex-pert Dr Felicity Coughlan, director of the Independ-ent Institute of Education (SA’s largest private higher

education institute), the most important thing to realise is that bad results are not the end of the road and there are still many options to get back on track. She says:

The most important thing to realise at this stage — even though it may be tough to stand up and face these choices — is that bad results are not the end of the road, and that there are still many options to get back on track.

Below par matric results do not mean you have to give up on your dreams and aspirations. In fact, if handled maturely and pragmatically, a disappointing performance could be just the catalyst needed to propel a person in a new and bett er direction, with more determination and resolve than before. As the saying goes, one should never let a good crisis go to waste.

Coughlan says parents, guardians and other caregivers should ensure they positively support learners during this diffi cult time as they may be facing a number of concerns, such as not being able to get into the higher education institu-tion they expected, having to choose a diff erent course, hav-ing to write supplementary exams, or even having to repeat the year. Many also have the emotional struggle with having

disappointed themselves and others. There are still many options available, but it is imperative

that proper research into all these options be conducted. These include options in the public and private sector, dif-ferent degrees or diplomas, a higher certifi cate instead of a degree as a stepping stone, volunteer work opportunities or part-time study, second semester registrations, supplemen-tary exams or redoing the school year in a more supportive environment.

First, adults should assist disappointed learners to get the poor results into perspective. This is oft en best done by plot-ting all the options that are still available and weighing them up against each other.

It is easier to feel bett er in the face of real choices than to be told to feel bett er without any sense of options. Facts help to reintroduce a sense of control over one’s fate and the path is then cleared for choosing the best possible way forward.

Options include:Writing supplementary exams: Not everyone will qualify

for supplementary exams, but if they do, they should defi -nitely register and do their very best to pass. Check with your school whether you qualify, and then go all out these next few weeks in ensuring that you spend as much time as possible behind your books.

Repeating the year: Having another go at matric is not a happy prospect for anyone who has just been through the mill, but it could be an exciting second chance if you go about it diff erently this time round. For instance you might choose to do some part-time work while being enrolled in a distance learning course, or you could choose to att end a diff erent in-stitution that specialises in rewriting. Many will even allow you to change your subjects.

Enrolling at a diff erent higher education institution: South Africa has only one quality assurance system, which means that private institutions and public universities are subjected to the same registration and accreditation checks and balanc-

es. So if your marks mean that you pass but are not able to go to your institution of fi rst choice, have a look around. There are some fantastic and oft en more work-oriented options available out there that you might not even have considered.

Choosing a diff erent course: Perhaps a higher certifi cate is the stepping stone you need to be accepted into the course of your choice. Or perhaps there is a completely diff erent di-rection which you can tackle, one that you were not aware of before. Again, do your research and do it thoroughly. Speak to the people in the industry you want to enter, and have a look around to see which institutions produce industry lead-ers. Today there are courses that did not even exist two years ago. Are you aware of these? If not, you have some pleasantly surprising research to do.

Electing to keep going even if things are not yet clear: Another cliché which continues to exist because it is true, is that it does not matt er how many times you fall — it matt ers only how many times you stand up. This is painful and dis-appointing, but it is only a catastrophe if you don’t stand up and face it. This can be no more than a temporary setback and can in fact be a character and strength-building exercise. Do not let the year go to waste.

If fulltime study or a return to school feels like too much of an ask or you do not have the funds to do this, then at least enrol for a short course which can keep you growing and in the habit of learning. Sometimes all that is needed is one or two small successes to realise that you are more than capable. Everyone fails sometimes. Successful people learn from their failures.

• The Independent Institute of Education (IIE) is the largest, most accredited regis-tered private higher education institute in South Africa. It has a history in education and training since 1909, and its brands — Rosebank College, Varsity College, Design School Southern Africa (DSSA) and Vega — are widely recognised and respected for producing workplace-ready graduates, many of whom become industry-leaders in their chosen fi elds. The IIE off ers a wide range of qualifi cations, from post-graduate degrees to short courses, on twenty registered higher education campuses across South Africa.

Request for suppliers to be registered in the municipal database

GREATER LETABA MUNICIPALITYThe Greater Letaba Municipality invites prospective service providers to be added in one or a maximum of three of the supplier categories below. In order to comply with

the procedures set out in Clauses 37 to 40 of the Supply Chain Management Policy; Regulation 14 of SCM Regulations and the Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (Act 56 of 2003) (MFMA), the municipality developed a supplier database to be used by the Supply Chain Management office. The purpose of this database is to give all prospec-

tive suppliers an equal opportunity to submit quotations to the Greater Letaba Municipality. Preference will be given to registered suppliers, but it does not necessarily follow that suppliers who are not yet registered will be totally exempted from quoting for the supplying of goods or services to the Greater Letaba Municipality. It is envisaged how-

ever, that this database will contribute to efficient administration and compliance with the MFMA.

NB: YOU MUST SELECT AT MOST THREE OF THE ABOVE CATEGORIES AND FILL THEM IN THE DATABASE FORM AS PROVIDED. ADDITIONAL COMPANIES MUST REG-ISTER IN THE DATABASE REGISTER FOR THE THIRD QUARTER OF 2015/2016 FINANCIAL YEAR WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THOSE WHO REGISTERED SINCE THE 01st JULY 2014.

COMPANIES ARE REQUESTED TO SELECT AT MOST THREE CATEGORIES AS LISTED ABOVE. THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF THE DATABASE FORMS IS THE 5th FEBRUARY 2016.

AN AMOUNT OF R100.00 (VAT INCLUSIVE) IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO THE REGISTRATION ON THE DATABASE.

Database forms are available from the Supply Chain Management Office, No. 44 BOTHA STREET, Civic Centre, Modjadjiskloof and Municipal website. All enquiries to be directed to Mr T.M.P Moshobane @ 015 309 9246/7/8.

Daardie man is Stephen

Cook, wat so pas 168 lopies as openingskol- wer in ons plaaslike

As ‘n man van Barry Richards se statuur so dink, wie is Oubal om te stry?!

“The reports of my death have been greatly exag-gerated.” — Mark Twain

Proteas — Op, Af of Uit?Cook, wat so pas 168 lopies as
