What’s new: This week saw the bi-annual STEM event take place at Anglo. The
four keynote speakers this year were Lydia Newton, from the
University of East Anglia, who spoke about Higher Education routes
into STEM subjects and the variety of disciplines that are accessible.
Secondly, Simon King from the Physics Department at King’s
College, London, and an ex-student of the Anglo European spoke
about his work in nano-technology and its existing current and future
applications in medicine and technology advancement. Greg Bowlt,
another Anglo alumni, who, after studying in the Netherlands, gained
a place via an apprenticeship route at a local engineering company,
spoke about his work on cutting edge technological advances in
hybrid car engines. Finally, Dr Brett McKinlay, senior lecturer in
structural engineering at City University, spoke about the incredible
range of opportunities available to civil engineers globally and the
significance of being able to converse in a second language. Over a
hundred parents and students attended this event and we are very
grateful to our distinguished guests for their time and commitment in
helping to inform our students of the wide ranging possible future
careers in STEM.

Mathematics challenge: Three monkeys met for tea in their favourite
café, taking off their hats as they arrived.
When they left, they each put on one of the
hats at random. What is the probability that
none of them left wearing the same hat as
when they arrived?
We are delighted that Tesco Chelmsford Superstore on Princes
Road has selected the Anglo European School Science Garden
for the blue token Community Fund Initiative. The Science Garden will enable us to grow our own vegetables
and will also add to the range of learning opportunities available
in Science and Food Technology. We could be granted £1,000-4,000 if successful. Please
remember to collect the blue tokens when you are shopping
there, or alternatively you can exchange other Tesco receipts to
receive blue tokens at the Princes Road store. Please share this
with your friends, family and neighbours to support the Anglo

A word from the Sixth Form: As we come to the end of the Upper Sixth mock
examination period, the results of which are included
in your Term 5 report due to be published next week,
and are in the midst of the Lower Sixth mini-mocks
period, then this is a perfect time to conduct that all
important exam self-reflection to analyse your
strengths and weaknesses. For example, is your
content knowledge secure and therefore you really
understand what you have been taught? Do your
revision techniques really help you to recall what is
important? How was your timing, and allocation of
time to the marks on offer? Do you understand what
the questions were actually asking you to do? Finally,
once you’ve worked out where your weaknesses are,
what are you going to do about them? These are just
some of the crucial questions that you need to answer
over the next couple of weeks in order to make sure
that this ‘mocks season’ is a useful and productive
one. Speak to your teachers if you aren’t sure as they
have lots of experience in techniques to help tackle
these problems. However, also make sure you don’t
forget the positives which is easily done, and then
incorporate them into your plan to develop your skills
event further.
