Chicago only has two seasons: winter and
road construction…or so the old saying
goes. But I would contend
we actually have three
seasons: winter, road
construction, and mini-grant!
And with great enthusiasm
we can formally announce
the beginning of another
busy season of wonderful
programs, made possible by
the generous grants provided
by the Jewish Federation.
In just a few short days, another mini-grant
program will bring us together for a
wonderful weekend of learning! On March
3rd, 4th, and 5th, Rabbi Gary P. Zola, PhD,
Executive Director of the Jacob Rader
Marcus Center of the American Jewish
Archives, will join us, to celebrate Shabbat
and teach about a variety of topics in
American Jewish History.
In his capacity as Executive Director of the
Archives, Rabbi Zola edits The American
Jewish Archives Journal, and as Edward M.
Ackerman Family Distinguished Professor of
the American Jewish Experience & Reform
Jewish History, Rabbi Zola teaches students
on the Cincinnati campus of the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
He is the author of a number of volumes,
most recently, We Called Him Rabbi
Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry, and
he is a well-versed speaker and presenter.

(Service schedule continued) President’s Message
Let's talk about Purim costumes from years past………
Those of us born in the "baby boomer" era were
treated to souvenirs that our parents brought back
from WWII. Ruth F. and I both received Chinese/
Japanese attire from our fathers. Ruth stated that she
enjoyed dressing up in these outfits, as
did I……until…..I was a four-year-old
geisha at the Purim parade. Let's not
even go into the fact that I was
dressed up as a female "escort". My
parents painted my face white, drew
slanted eyes on me, and they stuck
chopsticks in my top knot; very
politically incorrect, even in 1955. Did I mention that
all the other girls were dressed up as Esther?? Did I
mention that I spent years in therapy??
Larry B. has created a character that I, for one, look
forward to seeing every year. His character's name is
Gregor, not to be confused with Igor. Gregor,
Haman's lackey, has provided audiences with many a
laugh over the years. Hunched over, armed with a
questionable accent, Gregor has become part of BYBS
Purim lore. Then there was Barb S.'s Pink Lady satin
jacket…..very fierce! I also loved Libby M.'s Esther
costume, hilarious in its simplicity; The Little Mermaid's
ponytail, veil, and tiara.
One year, in the 1970's while my family belonged to
BJBE, and I lived in lovely, idyllic Alsip, I decided to
schlep my friend, Mary, with me to the BJBE Purim
celebration. Mary dressed as a stop light, and I
dressed up as Dolly Parton. Driving from Alsip to
Glenview, on a day that was not Halloween, I was clad
with several flashy blonde wigs, false eyelashes, and
fake boobs crushing into the steering wheel. Next to
me in the car, was a human stop light. Tollbooth after
tollbooth through which we drove, drew quizzical
stares from toll collectors. Forty miles later, we
arrived at BJBE, and I won first prize in the costume
contest. I probably won a bag of hamantashen or
something. Well, the party had to end sometime, so
Dolly and Stoplight, fake eyelashes and fake boobs
strewn about in the car, drove south on the same toll
way. But I won first prize, dude.
We hope to see you at our Megillah reading this year
on Saturday evening, March 11. Wear a costume,
throw on a hat, or come as you are. I guarantee a
great time will be had by all.

(Rabbi’s Message continued from page 1)
Though I’ve known Rabbi Zola all my life,
as a close family friend, it was my great
pleasure to study with him while I was a
rabbinical student in Cincinnati.
And I hope that you, too, will take great
advantage of the opportunity to join in
community, and to learn from this
wonderful teacher.
On Friday evening, March 3, @ 7:30pm,
Rabbi Zola will present “He was one of us!
American Jewry’s Relationship with
Abraham Lincoln” following community
Shabbat Services at BYBS. On Saturday
morning, March 4, @ 10:00am, during
community Shabbat services at Temple
Anshe Sholom, led by our Beit AmiChai
Hebrew School students, Rabbi Zola will
continue with “American Jews or Jewish
Americans?- Lessons we Learn from
Mourning Abraham Lincoln.” And finally,
on Sunday morning, March 5, @ 11:00am,
at BYBS, Rabbi Zola will share “Great
Voices, Civil Rights, and Jews in the

wonderful weekend of learning!
Wishing you a meaningful mini-grant season! Let the learning begin!

Steering Committee Update
Presidents’ Message March, 2017
The Steering Committee met for 2 1/2 invigorating hours on Thursday, February 17. One of the issues we discussed is improved communication with our constituencies, so this same information is being sent to all three congregations for insertion in the respective newsletters. The rest of the evening was spent reviewing the proposed Letter of Intent that was developed by attorney Michael Lorge for the prospective merger of the three congregations. The Letter of Intent covers such issues as the purpose of the merger, the concept of the new congregation, the steps and interim governance involved in the merger, task forces, assets and properties. We forwarded our corrections and additions to Michael. The Steering Committee will meet again on Thursday, March 9, at which point we will review the corrected Letter of Intent. If it meets with our approval, we will present it to our respective boards the following week for approval. Again, if you have any questions or comments, please contact a member of the board. We actually know more than the local rumor mill and look forward to talking with you.

What’s Up with Sisterhood
Our Book Review held in February was a success as all three congregations came together to discuss Protecting Paige with the author Deby Eisenberg. She shared her creative journey as she wrote this book followed by a lively discussion and of course, a delicious luncheon organized by Ruth Friedman. On March 31st, we will be celebrating Sisterhood Shabbat. Jonathan Roth, an employment specialist with the ARK, will be sharing the many programs that the ARK offers to the Jewish community. He will also talk about the Closet that WRJ Midwest is co-sponsoring with them. Come enjoy Shabbat with us and learn more about their many programs and enjoy a special Oneg. Plans are underway for our community seder. Check the flyer. Gayle Weil, Judy Lohr, Penny Shnay and I are off to the WRJ Fried Leadership Conference in Charleston this week. We look forward to sharing our experience. We are excited to network with sisterhoods from across the United States. Save the date for Kallah at OSRUI - April 28-30 2017. Exciting programs are being planned. B’Shalom

Beit AmiChai
On Sunday, February 5th, our third through seventh grade students participated in the World Wide Wrap. Thank you to Ron Rutzky for organizing this for us. Rabbi Caplan, Rabbi Harari and Ron along with members of Am Echad worked with groups of Beit AmiChai students to teach them about Tefillin and how to put it on. Thank you to all who participated and helped make this a wonderful experience! I also want to thank, Quynh Kirschner, Robin Latman, Joel Williams and Tracey Levy for preparing platters for the Tu B'Shevat Seders that our Sunday School classes had. We had our annual Havdalah service, pasta dinner and dessert auction on Saturday, February 25th at 6:15 p.m. at B'nai Yehuda Beth Sholom. This year our dessert auction will benefit both our own Beit AmiChai school and Leo Baeck school in Haifa Israel. I hope many of you will join us on Saturday, March 4th as our Hebrew School students lead the Saturday morning service. Services begin at 10:00 a.m. at Temple Anshe Sholom. We will also have the privilege of hearing Rabbi Gary Zola speak that morning. We will be celebrating Purim at Temple Anshe Sholom on Sunday morning March 12th with the students from both Munster Congregations. We will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a short Megillah reading, Purim shpiel and songs. Everyone is then invited to have food, fun and games in our carnival. We will end our morning at 12:30 p.m.

immediate families at their option. To select this plan, simply call Chicago Jewish Funerals at

handle all the details. The plan includes professional services of funeral director and staff,
custodial and general care of remains, the option of a tahara (the traditional Jewish
preparation of the body) a hearse/graveside transfer vehicle, staff and equipment for chapel
and a graveside or synagogue service. Merchandise includes a simple, dignified semi-oval
traditional casket of dark stained wood, muslin shroud (optional, not mandatory), register
book, shiva and yizkor candle, kriah ribbons, service folders, use of prayer books, kipot and 50
standard acknowledgement cards. The funeral price is $5,850. For further details, call the
Temple office or Chicago Jewish Funerals. The plan is offered as a convenience for members
and their families at a time of stress, but there is no obligation to use it. If you wish to observe

Spring Gift Card Sale!
In time for Pesach grocery needs, Mother’s Day and Spring graduations – as well as handy for routine purchases at gas stations and grocery stores – gift cards are once again on sale now. It's always nice to have a few on hand for those unexpected gifts you need right away. Buy gift cards via the temple’s scrip program and give two presents at once. A portion of the face value of each card you buy goes directly to BYBS!
“Scrip” is the name given to gift cards and certificates provided from local and national retailers. They are the same gift cards available in stores. Retailers including Wal-Mart, Jewel, Mariano’s, JC Penney, Kohls, Best Buy, Shell, Speedway, Starbucks, The Home Depot and Subway all participate in the scrip program, along with hundreds of others.
Purchase cards for the vendors you and your friends and family use, and support the Temple. How can these retailers help us raise money? It’s simple . . . partnered vendors agree to sell gift cards to our temple at a discount. You buy the gift cards at full face value and the temple keeps the difference as profit. NO SELLING INVOLVED! But feel free to extend this opportunity to your relatives, friends and co-workers. Buy a gift card via the temple’s scrip program and give two presents at one time. A portion of the face value of each card you buy goes directly to BYBS!
We’re taking orders now for pick up at the temple on Sunday, March 26 between 10:00AM and 12:00PM or from the office during business hours that week.
The order form is attached to this bulletin and is also available to be printed from our web site (www.bybs.org). In the event that a vendor offers multiple denominations of a gift card for a single entry in the form, please circle the desired denomination. Enter the total purchase price for each vendor in the ‘Amount’ column, we’ll figure out how many cards you’re requesting. The ‘Disc’
column indicates the percentage of each purchase that goes to BYBS. Return your order with a check made out to the Temple by March 17. Absolutely no orders will be accepted after that date! Please mark your
envelope ATTN: SCRIP.
If you have any questions, you can contact us at [email protected].
