Chairman’s Message

Firstly a very happy New year to everyone I hope 2018 is a good one.

Club News

(Much of this is lifted from Tony Peach’s club meeting minutes - big thanks to him for that - MAS)

Coaching Course

From the meeting: minutes

“Following the course, any pilot who wishes to take up a role of coach need to make the chair-man and senior coach aware of their availability. Acceptance as a coach will be confirmed by sen-ior coach and chairman.”

Steve Dredge has recently stated:

“Those of you that went to the Coaching course and would like to start coaching this year...dont worry, we will be mentoring ‘new coaches’. Bring your forms to the AGM this Thursday and we will sign you off.”

Congratulations to all who qualify.

Website

Frank has taken on management of the website. He’s concerned with the lack of photographs for this year’s gallery, and is considering re-structure-ing the homepage to be used for club announce-ments.

It is hoped that the KHPA website will return to full, active use. Members are encouraged to use the website and contribute material.

Thanks to Frank for his efforts.

KHPA Facebook Page

The question was raised as to whether the KHPA Facebook page needs to be public or should be-come a closed group. The matter may be dis-cussed in future.

Club Flying

Adie with a new paraglider??

Flying at St Agnes, the Towans and Perran - and the Camel Estuary / Brae Hill, Padstow for some miniwing action.

Dredgie on his Little Cloud

Tim Jones and Wyn Davies, flew the classic ridge run from St Agnes to Godrevy, seeing excellent conditions for it, but quite a bit of turbulence over the Godrevy headland. Congratulations to them. Here’s Wyn’s informative write-up.

St Agnes 3rd December 2017

Watching the forecast it was fairly sure to be ok for the day so why not?

Turned up and Cloud 9 were setting up so I fol-lowed.

Not at all breezy but showed good lift with good weak thermals for added height. Tim Jones now arriving and rigging. Managed a 1000ft amsl and just above cloud base at times and as Tim launched the plan was set and see where we get to.

Tim Jones joined me at a 1000ft and the arms started to wave, ok lets go, Lets go to lands end. 71 kmh down wind beat over Chapel Porth,

over the gap and don’t look back, Tim Jones now only 30 meters to my right but leading the way. :), Straight onto Porthtowan and across we went, By now we lost 200ft, not bad :). And now into lift.

Topping up on some good lift was worthwhile as we can enjoy the new scenery as we go. Cruising speed now mostly 40 to 50 kmh at trim.

Portreath ahead, ooo the Cove is huge on its own and thats before the gap! nevertheless straight as as were over 800ft.

The push across was fairly straight forward and once across we came into super bits of lift with some bad lumps of turbulence too.

Wow now onto North Cliffs, Well super lift and was really good place to be. Some amazing views along here, Really is.

The jump across Godrevy next and thats if we jump. Well Tim Jones takes the lead again and we’re off, Massive turbulence in the middle and looking North its hard to appreciate where the lumps of Rotor came from but the higher cliffs change the rotor’s behaviour in bigger and dif-ferent ways, Caution!! I just just knew to stay in front of the Godrevy ridge as the downdraft will pull us down maybe we were still close to the downdraft airflow.

Its a long bit of mainland to cross so height loss. Keep flying and don’t look back

Coming over Gwithian beach I was searching for Tim Jones and then see him on approach to land, I unzipped/ trimmers off & set up to join.

No regrets, but a few good pointers for the next flights.

Finally a massive thanks to Graham for the pre advice, Mark A. Smith for relighting the candle for the ridge runs, and of course my wing man Tim Jones

Click this link for the video. Hope you like it.

Special Thanks to Miles and Jake which were fly-ing at the Towans, Fergie for the lend of his vanfor retrieve, Kaz and Graham for organising our kit and vehicles at St Agnes :)

Wyn Davies

Wyn and Tim were at the XC game in the mid-dle of the month again - this time with Nigel on his Atos, and Mark AS on his Peak 3 paraglider. Booming day at St Agnes, and Wyn, Tim and Ni-gel flew some nice triangles, going back over the beacon for one of the turnpoints.

Kernow XC League

It turned out to be a good year for the League - with a whacking 27 flights being submitted for both HG and PG disciplines! Phippsy got a fantastic score showing what’s possible. Good to see Nigel putting up a good showing in both disciplines this year. And some classic ridge runs flown this year in both disciplines - St Agnes to Godrevy, and Pendeen/Morvah to St Ives. Well done everyone who participated in the League and hopefully this will motivate others to join in.

The final results are as follows:

Hang Gliding

1. Graham Phipps – 236.002. Tim Jones – 92.203. Nigel Waller – 47.704. Wyn Davies – 43.903. Dave Dewhurst – 27.305. Chris Holmes – 3.90

Paragliding

1. Mark A. Smith – 67.302. Nigel Waller - 23.903. Graham Phipps - 7.20

Kernow League Team Flying

One suggestion for making the League more fun for those who want to fly with others is to com-pete as a team. Here’s how it works. You are on the hill with a friend and you’re both on radio. You decide that you’ll declare an out and return goal - e.g. to Smeaton’s Pier from Carbis, or to ‘over the Porthtowan gap’ from Chapel. You then both fly together - in contact on radio sharing information. If you succeed in your joint goal flight you get not only your individual score for that flight but an extra team score - which you only get if you both make goal. You could do this with more than 2 pilots. Also, your ‘team’ could change from day to day. In doing this you get -

> The fun of flying together > Practice in goal setting > Practice using the radio & flying as a team > Participating in the Kernow XC League

Competitions 2018

Frostbite

Provisionally set for the 20/21st January. Orien-tated to local pilots, but other clubs will be alert-ed.

British Club Challenge (BCC) - Paras

There’s interest in the club in participating in the BCC this year. This gives us all a great opportunity to gain inland XC experience in a safe, fun, coach-ing environment. The main focus is on enjoying yourself and getting better as an XC pilot without being stressed by competition pressure and per-formance. For a quick recap.

> Season starts Easter bank holiday (2nd April) through to the first week of September > We can have up to 12 pilots in two teams > CP rated can fly > Multiple regional rounds take place on W/Es, mainly in SE Wales. Each round is 2 days > If you can commit to 3 W/Es for the comp, that’s good enough. It’s very flexible. Even coming down for a day can work sometimes > Accommodation is usually a big campsite (vans and tents), but you could book yourself in to a chalet if you want the luxury - lol > We can arrange to hold a round at e.g. St Agnes here in Cornwall. But the main point is to get inland big-hill thermalling & XC experience. So we’re looking at SE Wales > Mark A Smith is happy to take on the admin (team captain) role > For less XC-experienced pilots there will be others in the club who could take a coaching role to help you progress (even informally) > BCC website here: http://www.flybcc.co.uk/

My personal view on this comp is that we have a potentially competitive team in our club with some good pilots out there. But it may take a season to learn the ropes and for it all to come together.

There are 8 or 9 of us committed so far for two teams. If you are interested, please let Mark A Smith or Phil Lyons know at the AGM or by e-mail ([email protected]).

British Open Series (BOS) - Hangies

The dates for the BOS in 2018 are shown below.Chris Holmes, Wyn Davies and Graham Phipps are signed up. Contact Chris if you want to par-ticipate this year. Like the BCC this is an entry level national comp and a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a friendly competition, meet other HG pilots from around the country, and progress as an XC pilot.

Ozone Chabre Open

The 13th Ozone Chabre Open will take place from 30th June to 6th July 2018. Contact Phil Lyons for details.

Gin Wide Open

7th - 14th July: Ager, Spain. Website here. Con-tact Phil for details.

Naviter Open

THE NAV OPEN NEXT YEAR IN ST JEAN - JUNE 24 - 29 (Lovely place to fly!) This comp is a slight-ly higher level then the Gin Wide Open but still good fun! Contact Phil for details.
