Notes from Nicole, Interior Designerat Kimps ACE Hardware Adding an accent wallpaper has become one of my new favoriteways to transform a space. Now, I know what you may be thinking. You may be trying to forget the hours of scraping, steaming andhard work it took to get rid of that horrible flowered wallpaper youabsolutely hated. Or maybe, that time you vowed to never wallpaper again. Trust me, wallpaper is no longer the way you mayremember it to be. Nor is it that hard to do if you've yet to try it.

Like many products in the design industry, wallpaper too has become more user friendly. We now carry a line of wallpaper called Sure Strip that can be applied with no prep workand is super easy to remove. Hopefully that alone will ease your mind about wallpaper?

The use for wallpaper has changed drastically. Wallpaper today is used for more of anaccent wall or piece rather than a full room. Which creates easy projects that make stylishstatements in no time at all. That being said, the patterns are endless. You can choosefrom something traditional and classic, or bold and graphic. Whatever suits your style anddesign.

Do you like the look of rustic brick or wood? With wallpaper you can create the same looksand add the same texture to your walls and other surfaces. Wallpaper is an easieralternative that creates less mess and can save you a lot of work in doing your project, aswell as, in the long run. Unlike real wood or bricks, wallpaper is easy to remove and won'tleave your walls damaged when you decided it is time for a change. Patterns such asthese are also available in a “stick on, peel off” type of paper suitable for apartments ormore temporary places.

While many families areconsidering area schools fortheir children, an increasingnumber of families are optingto homeschool their children.Since its rebirth in the 1970s,homeschooling has rapidlygrown. Currently, more than2.3 million students are in-volved in K−12 home educa-tion. More than 2,000homeschool groups across the

country are participating in Na-tional School Choice Week2017 this week, highlightingan educational option that hasbeen effective for their chil-dren and families.

Why is homeschooling be-coming so popular? Many par-ents say they like being able tocustomize their children’s ed-ucation in pace and curriculumand achieve more academi-

cally. The freedom and flexibility

that homeschool students ex-perience allow them toprogress academically at theirown pace, taking 6th grademath and 5th grade reading inthe same year, for example, orworking through part of thesummer to catch up or moveahead.

Homeschooling is legal in all

50 states, and the advantagesspeak for themselves. On stan-dardized tests, homeschool stu-dents typically score inpercentiles 15 to 30 pointsabove their peers in publicschool, and they routinelyscore higher than average oncollege admissions tests likethe ACT and SAT.

“All parents want to providethe best education for their

children, and for many fami-lies, that means homeschool-ing,” said AndrewCampanella, president of Na-tional School Choice Week.“The time management and ac-ademic initiative that manyhomeschoolers develop setthem up very well for furthereducation and a career.”

Homeschool students partic-ipate in a variety of social ac-tivities, with their homeschoolgroups, churches, scouts, 4-H,sports teams, and art or music

programs.While homeschooling may

seem like a daunting projectfor families just beginning toexplore their options, it doesn’thave to be. More experiencedhomeschool parents and home-school group leaders are usu-ally eager to help new parentsfind the resources they need. For more information aboutNational School Choice Weekevents in the area, includinghomeschool events, visitwww.schoolchoiceweek.com.

It used to be that the size ofyour technology investmentwas in direct proportion to thesize of your business. That isno longer necessarily the case. With so many customizabletechnology offerings availablethrough the cloud, even thesmallest microbusiness can beequipped with enterprise-sizetechnology that can make adifference in today’s crowdedbusiness climate.

Available cloud solutions, such as collaboration soft-ware, Web-based e-mail andonline suites of Office soft-ware, can be combined to cre-ate a customized collection ofinterconnected technologies tohelp your business grow. Astudy by Intuit shows that by2020, 78 percent of smallbusinesses will be fullyadapted to the cloud. By in-vesting in these offeringsnow, small businesses canstay a step ahead of their com-petition for an affordable rate.

Consider this: With cloud-based solutions, implementa-tion and maintenance areturnkey. Behind-the-scenesupdates ensure better securitythan many small businesseswere previously able to af-ford, leveling the playing fieldwith larger enterprises when itcomes to technology infra-structure. What’s more, an in-vestment in the cloud is alsoan investment in security foryour proprietary information.

Cyberattacks are a growingthreat to businesses, big andsmall, across the globe. In asurvey conducted by McAfee, more than 75 percent of theseattacks were aimed at smallbusinesses. If your businesssuccumbs to an attack, it putseveryone at risk, including

your customers. The addedlevel of security with cloud-based technology is an asset, though it’s important to makesure employees practice re-sponsible password manage-ment to help protect thecompany.

This extends to employeeswho work remotely, as theycan become lax when loggingin to work servers and sharingdocuments in public places. That doesn’t mean small busi-nesses should discourage thisway of working. The ability to

work from anywhere is atrend that’s not going awayand cloud-based software letspeople work from coffeeshops and conference centers.Nearly 75 percent of smallbusinesses employ a remoteworkforce, so it’s imperative

that a company’s technology,especially security measures,match the flexibility of em-ployees.

Getting to the heart of sudden cardiac arrestEven a fit and healthy pro-

fessional athlete can sufferfrom sudden cardiac arrest—but a look at Olympic skaterPaul Wylie’s story may helpto shed some light on whatyou need to know about the

latest advancements in im-plantable heart devices thatprotect against sudden car-diac arrest and treat other ir-regular heart rhythms.

In 1992, Wylie won the sil-ver medal in men’s figure

skating at the WinterOlympic Games. After theOlympics, he joined the pro-fessional skating ranks, win-ning the 1992 U.S. OpenProfessional Championshipand the 1993 World Profes-

sional Figure Skating Cham-pionships; he then touredwith Stars on Ice for six yearsefore retiring.

Today, at 52, Wylie re-mains an avid skater, skierand runner, and continuescoaching and performing. Butin April 2015, he collapsedsuddenly while running withfriends. Luckily, one of hisworkout partners started CPRimmediately.

Upon arrival, paramedicswere able to resuscitate him.He was then put into a med-ically induced coma for sev-eral days. Wylie was shockedwhen he woke and learnedthat he had suffered suddencardiac arrest, an abrupt lossof heart function that can re-sult in death if not treatedwithin minutes. In fact, ap-proximately 95 percent ofsudden cardiac arrest casesare fatal, claiming more than450,000 lives annually in theU.S.

“Once I was conscious, ittook days to get my head

around the fact that I was soclose to death—in fact, that Ihad died—and just how for-tunate I felt to have had thecircumstances be what theywere,” said Wylie.

After surviving sudden car-diac arrest, Wylie knew hehad to look at ways to avoidanother episode in the future. After researching options, hechose a device called an im-plantable cardioverter defib-rillator (ICD), whichcontinuously monitors hisheart. If a dangerous and po-tentially life-threatening heartrate is detected, the ICDsends a lifesaving electricalsignal to correct it.

Wylie is now feeling greatand recovering nicely. He isskating and coaching regu-larly, while hitting the gymand running again. However,he is not able to get an MRI(magnetic resonance imag-ing) scan. Due to the potentialharmful interactions betweenthe magnet field and his im-planted heart device, he is not

able to have this important di-agnostic scan that helps to di-agnose various conditionsincluding stroke, cancer,Alzheimer’s disease, andmuscle, bone and joint pain.

“I worry because I am soactive and have had MRIs inthe past, so I know this couldbecome an issue in the fu-ture,” said Wylie. “I think it’simportant that people know toask their doctor about heartdevices that are MR-condi-tional, meaning they canallow for MRI screening.”

When he is ready for hisnext device, Wylie won’thave to decide between thelifesaving protection he getsfrom his ICD and the optionto have an MRI scan. TheU.S. FDA recently approvedan entire suite of implantablecardiac devices by Medtronicthat allow for MRI scans inboth 1.5 or 3 Tesla machines. These devices include pace-makers, ICDs, insertable car-diac monitors and cardiacresynchronization therapy de-fibrillators.

While February is HeartMonth, any time is a goodtime to learn more aboutnewly available implantablecardiac devices. If you or aloved one is evaluating a rec-ommendation from a doctorto receive an implantableheart device, consider askingif it has been approved for usein MRI scans.
