• We are happy to welcome our Bishop, Bishop Arthur Serratelli, as he makes a pastoral visit to Saint Anthony's this weekend. Bishop will be the celebrant of the 10:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday morning.

It is a particularly auspicious Sunday for Bishop's visit because today is the Solemnity of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, the patronal feast of our Cathedral and Diocese. One year ago this morning Bishop Serratelli led the diocese in the solemn re-dedication of the Cathedral after the major renovations undertaken as a result of the "Partners in Faith" Campaign. Our Cathedral parish was founded in 1820 when Bishop John Connolly, O.P. of New York sent Father Richard Bulger to Paterson to begin a parish. Father Bulger was the first priest to be assigned to live and work permanently in New Jersey. At the time, the New York Diocese (all of New York State and northern New Jersey), had only eight priests: 3 in Manhattan, and one each in Buffalo, Albany, Schenectady, and one assigned "to all the villages along the Hudson River. Brooklyn and Long Island, which today have 1200 priests, did not yet have a single priest. We think Father Bulger named the new church after Bishop Connolly, hence its feastday today.

The current cathedral, the third church for the parish, was erected (1865- 1870) through the vision and efforts of Father William McNulty, whose 96th anniversary of death was last Monday. Dean McNulty came to Saint John's in the middle of the Civil War (1863) and died several years after the end of World War I (1922) - 59 years as pastor, a New Jersey record that will never be surpassed.

Our Cathedral is one of the most visible in the United States. Every day, tens of thousands of motorists drive through Paterson on Route 80, and cannot fail to notice our Cathedral, four blocks away, the tallest building in the city, directing our hearts and minds toward heaven, much as Saint John the Baptist pointed out Christ in the Gospel.

• This coming Wednesday is Feast Appreciation Night beginning at 7:30 P.M. in the cafeteria of the school. This gathering allows all the feast volunteers the opportunity to hear a report of the feast, exchange stories and anecdotes, share some food with old and new friends, and recharge the batteries for the 39th Annual Saint Anthony's Feast.

• Summer Bible Study - Beginning this coming Tuesday, June 26, and

continuing for six weeks, Father Ray will lead a Bible Study Group beginning at 7:30 P.M. in the church. The group will focus on the Sunday readings. All are welcome.

• This Sunday marks the last Sunday Father Chris Barkhausen will be with us here at Saint Anthony's. On Friday he will be moving 40 miles to the northwest to take up his duties as Administrator of Saint Francis de Sales Parish in McAfee, Vernon Township. As the second-youngest administrator in the diocese, Father Chris will be responsible for about 1300 Catholic families in an approximately forty-square-mile area. We will all miss him, and we wish him well in his new duties.

• Next February 10-21, I will be leading a Faith Vacation to the Holy Land and Cyprus. We will be visiting many sites in Israel associated with the life of Our Lord, including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Cana, and Capernaum, as well as spending two days visiting sites associated with Saint Paul on the island nation of Cyprus. The cost is $3,098 from Newark. For a flier with more detailed information, please stop by the rectory.

A Prayer for the Solemnity of Saint John the Baptist Lord, our God, you send us as you sent John the Baptist, to proclaim your Word. Keep up humble and true to you

that Christ may increase, and we decrease, and you may be our only joy. Hear us through Jesus our Lord. Amen.

God bless you all through the summer, Father Ray

FAITH FORMATION

Feast Appreciation Night

Join us, Wednesday, June 27th at 7:30PM in the school cafeteria.

Nativity of St. John The Baptist First Reading: Isaiah 49:1-6 Isaiah tells how the Lord called to him from birth and gave him his name. He explains that although he thought he toiled in vain, his strength is in the Lord in Whose sight he has been made glorious. God made him a light to the na-tions so that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

Second Reading: Acts 13:22-26 John heralds the coming of Jesus by proclaiming a baptism of repentance. He says, “Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” The chil-dren of the family of Abraham and those who are God-fearing have received the word of salvation.

Gospel: Luke 1:57-66, 80 Elizabeth gave birth to a son whom she named John. On the eighth day, when her neighbors and relatives came to cir-cumcise the child, they wanted to call him Zechariah, after her father, but Elizabeth’s husband wrote on a tablet, “His name is John.” Immediately he spoke blessing God and the people became afraid. All who heard of the incident knew that the hand of the Lord was with John.

Become a Catholic The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process for those who desire to become Catholic. We welcome new members and pro-vide them with spiritual and catechetical formation. Individuals are helped with deep-ening their relationship with God, while at the same time broadening their understanding of the Church, its traditions and its teachings.

This communal process is for:

Adults who have never been baptized Adults baptized in a non-Catholic church but now desire to become Catholic Adults who were baptized Catholic but who

have not received the Sacraments of Holy Communion or Confirmation.

Classes begin in September with sessions being held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm at St. Anthony’s School. We have a great team who will be presenting on the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Participants will enter fully into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil which will be celebrated on Saturday, April 20, 2019 on Holy Saturday evening. They receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil.

Each participant will have a sponsor who will support them through their faith journey. The sponsor needs to be a fully initiated, practicing Catholic. If a candidate does not have someone to ask, we have parishioners who would be honored to serve as a sponsor.

For more information on the RCIA program, please contact Sister Betty Ann at 973-427-7873 or e-mail: [email protected]

We are happy to walk this faith journey with you!

The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist | Luke 1:57-66, 80

They wanted to call him Zechariah, a er his father, but Elizabeth’s husband wrote on a tablet, “His name is John.” Immediately he spoke, blessing God, and the people became afraid. All who heard of the incident knew that the hand of the Lord was with John.

THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST “From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. John heralded His coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel; and as John was completing his course, he would say, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals on His feet. My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent.’” The church celebrates the birth of three persons – Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist. We spend

time with John, especially during advent, recalling his conception, the meeting of his mother with

Mary, and his ministry in the desert, preparing the way of the Lord. St. Paul today, in the reading

from the Acts of the Apostles, helps us focus on the role of John.

He was a ‘herald’ announcing the coming of the Messiah, an arrow pointing out the One he

would call the ‘Lamb of God.’ The church today is the herald of the Good News. In the ‘Joy of

the Gospel’, Pope Francis points out that the kerygma, the announcement or proclamation of

the Good News is vital for us today. We are to be like John the Baptist, announcing, being the

herald that we have salvation in the person of Jesus Christ. ‘Hear ye, hear ye.’
