Saint Acacius of Sinai lived during the sixth cen- tury and was a novice at a certain monastery in
Asia. The humble monk distinguished himself by his patient and unquestioning obedience to his Elder, a harsh and dissolute man. He forced his disciple to toil excessively, starved him with hunger, and beat him without mercy. Despite such treatment, Saint Acacius meekly endured the affliction and thanked God for everything. Saint Acacius died after suffer- ing these torments for nine years.
Five days after Acacius was buried, his Elder told another Elder about the death of his disciple. The second Elder did not believe that the young monk was dead. They went to the grave of Acacius and the second Elder called out: “Brother Acacius, are you dead?” From the grave a voice replied, “No, Father, how is it possible for an obedient man to die?” The startled Elder of Saint Acacius fell down with tears before the grave, asking forgiveness of his disciple.
After this he repented, constantly saying to the Fathers, “I have committed murder.” He lived in a cell near the grave of Saint Acacius, and he ended his
life in prayer and in meekness. Saint John Climacus (March 30) mentions Saint Acacius in The Ladder (Step 4:110) as an example of endurance and obedi- ence, and of the rewards for these virtues.

Where the Bishop is, There is the Church
In this space, we continue to examine the Divine Liturgy and what it teaches us about our faith and our encounter with our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. As the choir chants the hymn, “Truly she is worthy to be blessed” (Axion estin), the priest completes an accompanying prayer, in which he prays for the well-being of the entire Church as well as civil authorities and the armed forces.
After the prayer, he declares that there is one who we remem- ber above all. The priest asks God to remember our Bishop “among the first” and to “grant him ... safe- ty, honor, and health, length of days, rightly teaching the word of Your truth.”
The Lord sent out the Holy Apostles to baptize the nations in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. He directed them to teach his flock everything He had taught them. In this way, the Apostles were itinerant mis- sionaries, traveling from town to town, where they established local churches.
As they left a community, they appointed a respected man to over- see the church which they founded and continue the ministry they had started. This overseer (episkopos) or bishop, would be Christ in the midst of the faithful.
Thus, the role of the bishop was established in the earliest moments of the Church and is detailed in the Book of Acts as well as the earli- est correspondence of the Apos- tolic Fathers—those hierarchs and teachers who the Apostles taught and commissioned to lead the na- scent Christian communities.
One such early bishop was St. Ignatius of Antioch, who, by tradi- tion, was the child Christ put on His knee when he said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hin- der them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” At the close of the first century, Ignatius wrote the church in Philadelphia, told them to heed their bishops, and instruct- ed them, “where the shepherd is, there you should follow as sheep.” Put another way, where the bishop is, there is the Church that Christ founded, the Apostles preached, and the bishops preserve.

The crowds … with their princes and teachers … looked at Christ as being a mere man like one of
us, and not as God who had become man. They ap- proached him to test him and lay the nets for him….
He is called here a ruler. He fancied himself to have learned the law and supposed that he had been accurately taught it. He imagined that he could convict Christ of introducing laws of his own and of dishonor- ing the commandment spoken by most wise Moses. It was his goal to prove that Christ opposed and resisted the former commandments and established new laws by his own authority, in opposition to those previous- ly existing. Their wicked conduct toward him had a false pretext. He comes near and makes a pretense of speaking kindly. He calls him “Teacher,” designates him “good,” and professes himself desirous of being a disciple. He says, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Observe how he mixes flattery with fraud and deceit, like one who mingles vinegar with honey. He supposed that he could deceive him in this way.
What reply is made by the all-knowing One of whom it is written that he “takes the wise in their craft- iness”? “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one, God.” You see how Christ proved imme- diately that the ruler was neither wise nor learned, al- though he was the ruler of a synagogue. He says, “You did not believe that I am God, and the clothing of the flesh has led you astray. Why did you apply to me titles suitable to the supreme nature alone, while you still assume that I am a mere man like you and not supe- rior to the limits of human nature?” In the nature that transcends all, God alone is found to be good by na- ture, that is, unchangeably good…. He says, “I do not seem to you to be truly God. Ignorantly and foolishly, you have applied to me the properties and virtues of the divine nature. Why do you then imagine that I, a mere man that never is invested with goodness but only gains it by the assent of the divine will, have the property of the unchangeable nature?” This was the meaning of what Christ spoke St. Cyril of Alexandria

COVID 19
Even before the Governor’s re- cent announcements related to
“re-opening the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” we have been diligently plan- ning for the day our Cathedral will once again be open to our stewards, families, and friends. That day will be Sunday, May 31. In these chal- lenging times, there will be certain directives that must be implemented and followed to assure the safest possible environment for the faithful to worship, partake of the Holy Sacra- ments (especially Holy Communion), and re- connect with your fellow parishioners (at least from a safe distance).
Christ’s Holy Church and this Cathedral have existed through persecution, plagues, infec- tious disease, world wars, terrorist attacks, and other periods of great challenge and con- cern. The Church and this Cathedral stand as a symbol of faith. The Church is the place where we pray best and belong. However, in this time, and because of the unpredict- able nature of this insidious virus there are directives, rules, and limitations, which we must accept in order to re-open and resume our liturgical practices in the safest possible way. These are rules (not suggestions) that we must enforce. We ask that each and every person understand and follow the directives listed below:
• According to the Center for Dis- ease Control (CDC), any building
unoccupied for 7 days or longer need only receive “normal routine cleaning.” We plan to go beyond these guidelines and have the Cathedral extensively cleaned and disin- fected by a professional third-party cleaner. This is an extended process that will be com- pleted prior to Sunday, May 31. From this baseline, the Cathedral will be disinfected and sanitized between each service, includ- ing high traffic, high touch areas like bath- rooms, doorknobs and handles, the elevator panels, etc.
• The congregation size for any service will be limited to 40% of our Cathedral seating capacity.
• If you are 65 years of age or older and if you have underlying conditions, or any age with known underlying conditions, you should stay home and continue to partici- pate in the services via our Live Stream.
• If you are 65 years of age or older without known underlying health issues, we recom- mend you stay home and continue to par- ticipate in the services via our Live Stream.
• If you have any symptoms at all, attributed to COVID-19, you must stay home.

• If you are attending services at the Cathe- dral, you must wear a protective mask at all times upon entering the building except for the moment when you may receive Holy Communion. If you are under medical in- struction not to wear a mask, you must clear- ly indicate this to the “Greeter” upon enter- ing the Church. If you are attending services with a child/children between the ages of two and five, a protective mask is at the dis- cretion of the Parent. Children under the age of 2 should not wear a protective mask.
• Only the main entrance of the Cathedral will be opened at the time of services. The Courtyard entrance will be locked.
• The Davis Hall will be closed and off limits for the foreseeable future. Restrooms will only be available in the lower hall where there are separate men’s and women’s facilities.
• The elevator will be “hosted” by a Greeter to ensure only “immediate household mem- bers” enter the elevator at any one time.
• When arriving to Church you should vener- ate the icons by bowing, but you should not kiss any icon.
• The Pangari will be staffed by one Parish Council member to assist you, as much as possible, without contact. You may offer a donation for devotional candles which will then be placed at the iconostasis by a Parish Council member. A Parish Council mem- ber will guide arriving parishioners to the Pangari to ensure appropriate distancing between arriving parishioners. Household family unit members may approach the Pangari together.
• Seating inside the Church will be restricted to a 6 ft distance between parishioners (again defined as an “immediate household unit”) to the left and right and front and back. It is imperative that we maintain appropriate dis- tancing at all times. Ushers will be present to seat you at an appropriate distance from other parishioners inside the Church.
• Family members who are not part of the same household must sit 6 ft apart without exception.
• There will be markers throughout the Church to help assure appropriate distancing.
• Father Demetri will administer Holy Com- munion in our traditional manner. Do not wipe your lips/mouth on the communion cloth. The sextant will place a piece of an- tidoron in your hands with tongs. We will form a line for Holy Communion in the cen- ter aisle. Following Holy Communion, you will return to your seat by the side aisle only.
• At the conclusion of the Liturgy you will exit as directed by the “Ushers” to receive antidoron row by row, standing at a distance. There will be no hugging, handshakes, or kissing.
• There will be no fellowship hour after services.
These rules were taken from State directives, lo- cal guidelines, and the direction and guidance of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios. Our intent is to assure all our Stewards, their fami- lies and our many friends, a safe and comfort- ing experience in the Household of God. We want to see you, we want to pray with you, but above all, we want you all to be safe, healthy and able to worship in a manner that is best for you.
The 2020 Version of the St. Nicholas Luncheon
In a year in which we have missed so much, we must imagine our most cherished traditions.
Every year at this time we would be anticipating our annual Cathedral Philoptochos St. Nicholas Luncheon. We would fill the Davis Hall, children would visit with St. Nick, families would gather around the Christmas tree for pictures, we would cheer the many raffle winners, and our families and friends would enjoy each other’s fellowship. This year that can’t happen but we can imagine it.
What is harder to “imagine” is the impact of missing this event. The Cathedral Philoptochos has two major fund raisers each year, our Palm Sunday bake sale, and our St. Nicholas Luncheon on December 6, both were missed in 2020. The proceeds from these major events directly contribute to the many philanthropic missions of our Cathedral Philoptochos. The St. Nicholas Luncheon, in particular, serves our St. Basil Ministry. Annually we provide gift cards to the children of St. Basil Academy. We can imagine the joy and excitement of ‘going shopping’ for their favorite item. Although 2020 is such a challenging year, we continue to imagine we will be able to fulfill our annual St. Basil Christmas gift mission as well as our other philanthropic ministries with your help. The Cathedral Philoptochos is committed to carrying on its philanthropic work despite the pandemic. Good work need not be stopped, even if it is a bit more challenging. You can help by mailing a donation, or visiting our Cathedral website and donating to Philoptochos. We are always grateful for your continued genorisity and support. Thank you. Although we have to imagine being together this year, we will see you in person, on December 5, 2021 for the Annual St. Nicholas Philoptochos Luncheon.

participate in our 3rd Annual Christmas Giving
Tree Ministry, which grants gift wishes to the
children of the Dimock Center, located not too
far from our Cathedral. The Dimock Center
serves communities in Boston and across the
state, providing health and community care,
behavioral health services and child and family
services to more than 19,000 people annually.
We all know that the need this year is greater
than ever. The lighted Christmas Tree will be
located in the Lower Narthex decorated with
Christmas ornaments with the gift wishes of
the children. The ornament will be given to you
as a thank you. Purchase the gift indicated on
your ornament, bring the unwrapped gift to
Church in a Christmas gift bag if possible, and
place it under the Tree. You can be gratified
to know that your kind expression of the true
spirit of Christmas will bring a smile to
someone this Christmas morning.
