New: The past year has seen the publication of much new Jewish fiction, and these two months we focus on two of the most critically claimed of these books. Local author Dara Horn, whose every novel has garnered prizes from the Jewish and general literary worlds, gives us her fourth book, A Guide for the Perplexed and Joshua Max Feldman's first novel, The Book of Jonah, retells that famous story in a most unexpected way.

Thursday, March 5, 2015, 7:30 PM A Guide for the Perplexed by Dara Horn Only someone with Dara Horn's knowledge of Jewish history and tradition could have written as

unexpected a novel. Computer scientist Josie Ashkenazi travels to Egypt to con-sult on computer analyses of ancient manuscripts, and is kidnapped there. We move on to Solomon Schechter, whose discovery of the Cairo geniza a century earlier brought to light the world's largest and most important undocumented collection of ancient Jewish texts. Ashkenazi and Schechter’s stories, and their overlay, reinforce the importance of the text in Jewish life, as well as demon-strating that the power of the written word can be quite frightening indeed.

Thursday, May 7, 2015, 7:30 PM The Book of Jonah by Joshua Max Feldman Can we imagine Jonah living not in the ancient Near East, but as an attorney in 21st century

New York City? Feldman can, and does so with imagination, substance and hu-mor. By translating key themes of the Biblical book – the imperative nature of a voice from out of the blue, how to explain that which is unexplainable, that a specific inescapable fate awaits each of us – to the modern world, Feldman illu-minates its majesty, causing as to appreciate Jonah anew, while laughing most of the time.

    CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING 2015

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin History Through Text is a seminar to be offered throughout the year, taught by Rabbi Kulwin. Taught in blocks, each class will also be a stand-alone unit, so that an inability to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an enjoyable and simulating learning experience. Second Series: Jews in Medieval Spain: From Golden Age to Inquisition and Expul-sion: Tuesday, March 17, 7:00 PM: The Sephardic Diaspora: From Iberia to the World

Monthly Lunch and Learn: “Jews and Justice” with Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz Each month we’ll explore traditional Jewish texts and glean lessons on current issues, rang-ing from economic justice to reproductive rights to gun violence, among others. Bring your dairy lunch, and we will provide the beverage! Thursdays, March 12 & May 14, 11:30 AM 2015 Bloom Lecture: Revolution at Qumran; How the Dead Sea Scrolls Shook Up Judaism with Professor Gary A. Rendsburg Blanche and Irving Laurie Professor of Jewish History in the Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University Tuesday, March 24, 7:30 PM

The story of the 1947 discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and their subse-quent publication has been told many times but the story is still not over. Ongoing study of the Scrolls continues to reveal new information and insights about our ancient past. Prof. Rendsburg will present the story of the initial finds, the excavations of Qumran, the progress (thanks to pol-itics, often very slow) of scholarly work during the ensuing decades, and then focus on just how the Dead Sea Scrolls have indeed shook up Judaism and Jewish life.

Gary A. Rendsburg is the Blanche and Irving Laurie Professor of Jewish History in the De-partment of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University. His teaching and research focus on ‘all things ancient Israel’ – primarily language and literature, though also history and archaeolo-gy. His secondary interests include post-biblical Judaism, the Hebrew manuscript tradition, and Jewish life in the Middle Ages. Prof Rendsburg is the author of six books and about 150 articles; his most popular book is The Bible and the Ancient Near East, co-authored with the late Cyrus Gordon. In addition, he has produced two courses for the ‘Teaching Company – Great Courses’ program, one on ‘The Book of Genesis’ and one on ‘The Dead Sea Scrolls’. Prof Rendsburg has visited all the major archaeological sites in Israel, Egypt, and Jordan; plus he has excavated at Tel Dor and Caesarea. He previously taught at Cornell Uni-versity and Canisius College; and he has served as visiting professor or visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Colgate University, the University of Oxford, the University of Sydney, and the Hebrew University. His current book project is entitled How the Bible Is Written, with particular attention to the use of language to create literature. This lecture is supported by the Bernard and Muriel Bloom Memorial Lecture Fund.
