BY THE WAY •••

• Pentecost and The Feast - The Solemnity of Pentecost (May 20) and our Annual Saint Anthony's Feast (June 6-7-8-9) are only seventeen days apart this year. But they are actually much closer and have more in common than that.

Pentecost is the feast that celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples and the beginning of the Church. The reading for that day described how people of many different nationalities from across the Roman Empire and many different languages, all heard the apostle speaking in one language they could all understand, and creating a unity out of their diversity. It is the beginning of those two "marks of the Church" that we profess our belief in every Sunday in the Creed - the Church is one and catholic (universal). This is commemorated in the last window on the rectory side of our church.

Our Annual Saint Anthony's Feast is also very much about unity and universality. It gathers men and women of very diverse ages, ethnic backgrounds, of various parish organizations, neighborhoods and outlooks to come together and form a unity in celebration and support of our parish. As Joan Elia says to me with great conviction each year, "It's not just about the money." Indeed, it is not! It is about coming together for four days and creating a very unique and special unity out of diversity in acknowledgement of Pentecost.

The Feast is just a month away. If you haven't yet signed up to help, please be catholic and send in your volunteer form.

• New Altar Server Training: Father Sylwester continues training for new altar servers on Wednesdays, from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. in the church. This is open to all parishioners, fourth grade and up. The training will continue for several Wednesday afternoons.

• Our annual Novena to Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of our parish continues each Tuesday evening through June 12, the eve of the saint's feast day. The Novena begins at 7:30 P.M. Come out and honor our holy patron saint.

• Group VBS 2018: Shipwrecked ... Rescued by Jesus! 2018 Summer Bible School will be held at Saint Anthony's on July 16-17-18-19-20 from 9:00 A.M. to

12:00 Noon in the School Cafeteria. A $20 donation is requested. More information is included elsewhere in this bulletin. Early registration for proper planning is requested. Enroll by returning the enrollment form to the rectory, or sign up online.

Deus Providebit: This is an old Latin phrase that means, "God will provide." Preaching last Saturday night for the first time, newly-ordained Deacon Charles Lana began his

homily with a story about his great-grandfather's service in World War I. Many of Charlie's family were caught by surprise because they had never heard the story before. Although Charlie's grandfather had shared the story about his own father with Charlie, he had not told it to many other members of the family. Somehow, Charlie's grandfather must have sensed that someday Charlie would need a good story to begin his preaching career.

Deus providebit!

• This Sunday is observed as Mother's Day in the United States - an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and thank all our mothers, grandmothers, step mothers, foster mothers, godmothers - in short all the women in our lives who have, through their maternal care, helped give us life and love.

Even as we congratulate all the mothers of our parish, we offer this prayer for them on this, their special day.

A Mother's Prayer: Loving God, you are both Father and Mother to us. You gave us your own Beloved Child Jesus That we may come to see from his words and deeds of compassion, how much you care for us. You gave us Mary, our Mother, faithful disciple, who treasured your word in her heart. Like her may I be ever attentive to your word. Make me sensitive to the needs of my children that they, like Jesus, may grow in wisdom, age and grace. May they be joyous in their living, compassionate in their loving, and generous always in your service. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

PARTNERS IN FAITH UPDATE In the spring of 2013, St. Anthony answered the call to pledge over $1 Million to the Partners In Faith Campaign. We have now entered our 5th and final year of this most important and rewarding endeavor. YOUR PLEDGE DOLLARS AT WORK IN OUR DIOCESE: Over the past 4 years PIF pledges have served thousands of people in desperate need through our Catholic Charities Agencies. We have evangelized our future generations through our catholic schools commitment to fostering a faith-based education, built on academic excellence and character building. We have also served the priests who have served us by assisting those facing disabilities, nursing care and other significant health related problems. And finally, we have completed the restoration of The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson to its befitting place of worship. YOUR PLEDGE DOLLARS AT WORK IN OUR PARISH: St. Anthony has used our portion of your pledge dollars to address some dire buildings & grounds issues, such as the replacement of our school gymnasium floor and various church roof issues. We recently completed the largest PIF project, in both cost & size, the resurfacing of our entire parking lot! Due to the deteriorating condition of the parking lot we needed to address this before all your pledges were complete, but we still need your support to pay off this costly project!!!! We thank you for your commitment and remind you to complete your pledges; much has been done, but our undertaking is not yet complete. If you need information pertaining to the status of your pledge, or if you were unable to keep your pledge, but now find yourself in a better position of support, please contact the Diocesan Offices for assistance. Mr. Sean Hughes at (973) 777-8818, extension 263, will be happy to answer any of your questions. A financial breakdown of our PIF activity is as follows: Total PIF Pledges: $1,000,440 Parish Portion of Pledges: $315,000 Total Pledges Received: $836,092 Parish Pledges Received: $209,000 Total Pledges Outstanding: $164,348 Parish Pledges Outstanding: $106,000 *

*Note that our Parish’s portion of the pledges is based on 25% of the parish goal of $815,000 and 60% of pledges received over that goal. Therefore, this final 5th year is very important for us to complete in order to reach our anticipated parish pledge amount of $315,000. Please make every effort to fulfill your pledge. Thank you.

FAITH FORMATION

Thank you to our Catechists and Staff!

From Sister Betty Ann, FMA

Our Religious Education program has just concluded and I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all who make our program of Catechesis such a successful and fruitful ministry for our more than 300 children in it and for our parish-at-large. Our Catechists (religious education teachers and staff) spend untold hours in preparation and teaching time each weekend in order to pass on the Catholic faith to a new generation of believers—your children—and I know that I join all of our parents in offering our collective appreciation. The time, energy and love that comprises those who take on this ministry is not only a powerful sign of Christian Discipleship, but it is also the bedrock of each Catholic parish: to pass on Christ’s teachings and faith to others. Thank you one-and-all who serve Christ in our program and parish! Your commitment to our young parishioners is greatly appreciated. It has been a pleasure to work with you!

Flowers on the Virgin Mother altar in Memory

of Teresa D’Amelio

First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 1:1-11 Jesus had appeared many times to His disciples af-ter His resurrection. On this final occasion, Jesus’ departing message is that they will soon receive the Holy Spirit to strengthen them in their work. No sooner does He say this, he is taken up to heaven before their eyes. Second Reading: Ephesians 1:17-23 Paul prays that God may grant wisdom and enlight-enment to the Ephesians so that they may know the great hope to which they are called. Every power has been given to Christ who now reigns in heaven. He is the “head of the church, which is His body.” Gospel: Mark 16:15-20 Jesus told His disciples to go and spread the gospel to every creature, to the world. Jesus also spoke of the signs that will accompany those who believe in Christ. After He spoke with them, He was taken into heaven and took His seat the right hand of God.

St. Anthony Novena

SOCIAL SERVICES

Soles4Souls Regional Donation Center-NJ: I wanted to send you a note to let St. Anthony’s Church know the impact they have made by sup-porting Soles4Souls in hosting shoe drives throughout the year. St. Anthony’s Church donated over 450 pair of shoes to Soles4Souls. The shoes you donated benefit Soles4Souls international micro-enterprise program as a tool to generate income. The micro-enterprise model offers a powerful and sustainable way for people to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Soles4Souls creates sustainable jobs and pro-vides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Since 2006, Soles4Souls has distributed 30 million pairs of shoes in 130 countries. We couldn’t have done this without amazing volunteers in our community just like St. Anthony’s Church. If we are taking into consideration our partners in Haiti and Honduras you have given the gift of 2,250 meals, one year of enrollment tuition for 15 students or 22.5 YEARS worth of shelter for a family. This is AMAZING! We appreciate all of the hard work and dedication you put into this drive and everything you do for the community. Soles4Souls looks forward to partnering with you again soon. A big "Thank You" goes to Social Ministry member Dave Watts for his outstanding work with this very meaningful effort (another new initiative of our Ministry). Thanks too, to Elisa Wares and our St. Anthony School community for their fantastic job in partnering with us. Well done, everyone!! Since we did so well the first time around, we hope for a repeat next year! "Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

CRS RICE BOWL Many, many thanks to all of you who participated in CRS Rice Bowl this past Lenten Season. We're grateful for you remembering the poor not only through-out the world but right here in our own diocese. Your donations totaled just under ,100.00 ($3,093.90 to be exact; $2,665.97 in 2017). Way to go!!

A THANK YOU TO ATLANTIC STEWARDSHIP

BANK We gratefully acknowledge the recent generous donation to our food pantry of $500. from Midland Park based Atlantic Stewardship Bank (ASB). Over the past 12 months, ASB has donated charitable contributions to more than 285 recipients. Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center’s

From Sunday May 20 through Father’s Day, our church will be participating in Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center’s Baby Bottle Boomerang. Located in Wayne, Hackensack and Paterson, Lighthouse provides free services to lovingly guide and support wom-en, men and teens facing unplanned pregnancies toward life-enhancing choices. Through ultrasounds and ongoing par-enting support, Lighthouse shares the love of Jesus in practical ways that save and change hundreds of lives. In addition, the center offers confidential support to help those troubled by a past abortion find forgiveness and healing. Last year, over 428 babies were born, and hundreds of moms and dads were supported through the work of Lighthouse. This year’s Baby Bottle Boomerang will pro-vide critical funds to save and change more lives through all three Lighthouse locations. We encourage you to take a baby bottle home with you. Please fill it with change, cash or a check and return it to the church on or before Father’s Day. Keep the attached wrapper as a reminder to pray for the center, and to point those in pregnancy-related need to Lighthouse. Thank you. Please remember to return your baby bottles for Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center by Sunday, June 17. Your change, cash or check helps Lighthouse save and change more lives. Baby bottles may be placed in the box located at the doors of the church. (Please return empty bottles, too – this saves the center money next year!)
