    NATIONAL CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH(Mandaluyong City)

    NCMH was established through Public Works Act 3258. It was formally

    opened on December 17, 1928 and was originally called the INSULAR

    PSYCHOPATIC HOSPITAL. It was later called the National Mental

    Hospital.

    On November 12, 1986, it was renamed NATIONAL

    CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH (NCMH) through MemorandumCircular No. 48 issued by the Office of the President.

    NCMH has an authorized bed capacity of 4,200 and a

    daily average of around 3,000 in-patients. It has a total of 35

    Pavilions and 52 Wards sprawling on a 46.7 hectare compound in

    Mauway, Mandaluyong City.

    Monday, June 04, 2012 (Day 01)

    This morning, we are all met in our campus (LSPU-SCC) for the preparation for

    the departure for summer affiliation in National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) inMandaluyong City. We arrived in our recent dormitory for transferring the baggage to

    the selected rooms. Then we proceed to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH)

    for the orientation. Upon the arrival we first accompanied by Mrs. Laila Silva, a nursing

    training coordinator hence she also serve the one who oriented the three groups

    After the orientation we have gone back to the dormitory for further preparation

    for tomorrows activities. Thus, the rest of the activities of today turned to good cause

    through the advisories of the respective clinical instructors (CIs).

    Tuesday, June 05, 2012 (Day 02)

    Our group reached the suggested pavilion (Pavilion 26) wherein our shift is

    designated. Our clinical instructor was Ms. Ivy Lourdes F. Ortiz, she introduced to us the

    information regarding the patients in the pavilion we assigned. She also told the

    different activities which is specific to the residents and the requirements such as the

    self-awareness, My Hand, my autobiography, different case study, process recording,

    and psychiatric diseases compilation.

    The main topic of this day was the outlining of the activities systematized as

    Plan of Activities, this served as the reference for the proper flow of activities such as

    morning/ afternoon care, exercise, parlor games, different therapies, and the nurse-patient interaction (NPI).

    Wednesday, June 06, 2012 (Day 03)

    This afternoon, we went to the pavilion 26, it was our first time to handle a

    resident with a ratio of one student nurse is to one resident. Our clinical instructor gave

    us residents which are selected for the interaction, she also introduced to us the

    different diagnosis of the residents and majority of them had selected before in the

    recent affiliation of the same year. Together with the activities been programmed such

    as fill the face game, poetry, drawing their expression to the bond paper followed by

    reasoning according to their level of thinking, our group prepared snacks/ meals for the

    residents.

    The goal of the interaction is to establish rapport and gain trust therapeutically.

    Thus, all of the residents were enjoyed the prepared activities that also gave them

    motivation in different part of their focus and improving the sense of being a socialized

    individual.

    Thursday, June 07, 2012 (Day 04)

    This morning, our group prepared another set of activities which is indicated forthe residents. But before doing that, we first led the personal grooming of every resident

    and proceed to exercise. They are all participating throughout the activities, otherwise

    we also included parlor game which is titled Pinoy Henyo and the eleven residents

    were divided onto pairs for the game. It should be consumed in a short period of time to

    win. This game tests the fast concentration and focus of the residents toward the

    subject given.

    Then, followed by music and art therapy which included action song, after the

    music played, they are individually asked about their outlook in the song. After that

    therapy, bibliotherapy comes next and it included the different current news and eventswhich is appropriate to the resident. This includes news related to health, jobs,

    economy, weather, and sports. Therefore they are all listened accordingly then they are

    all asked regarding the topic hence all of them answered properly.

    Friday, June 08, 2012 (Day 05)

    This afternoon of our shift in pavilion 26 we are all prepared to materialize our

    plan which is moreover related to occupational therapy, the first was the making of pen

    holder out of popsicle sticks with the direction of the student nurses in every side; the

    faster and beautiful work will be declared as a winner. Second, it is pastry (pastillas)

    making. Prior in doing the task, all of the residents were guided to the sink and have

    hand hygiene. After that, the table was ready with cover and the directions were

    introduced together with the profit raised over the expenses spent.

    Every resident was filled by ideas regarding how they will raise the profit over the

    expenses they spent. Otherwise, this served as additional form of income while they are

    in the institution/ pavilion of the hospital.
