round which is our main motivation” said Suriname’s captain, Roberto Joval.

Olney Thompson, Cayman’s captain and most experienced player indicated “we did a

we should do much better.”

know the strength of Cayman Islands and I admit I was positively surprised; it was a

the tournament.”

With a positive attitude, Keith Higgins, Cayman’s Coach spoke “based on our seeding,

Suriname was expected to win but I believe they were surprised how well we did based

Barbados starts with victory over Aruba

GRAND CAYMAN,

Cayman Islands,

October 6, 2012.-

Barbados started the

NORCECA Group E

Men’s 2014 FIVB World

Championship with a

3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-

14) victory over Aruba.

Barbados performed

firmly as expected.

Shawn Simpson

produced 15 points for

the winners, while

Aruba was led by

Fransua Angela with 8 points. Barbados made the difference with a 10-3 margin in

aces.

Jamaal Nedd, Barbados’ captain indicated that their success as a team is because of

the strong chemistry between the players “we know each other well even if we

normally don’t have the chance to play together, only for each ones team back home

which keeps us sharp and our individual strengths add up.”

Aruba’s captain, Eargenell De Cuba said “we had some problems with our setter and

that made things difficult for us; normally I am a setter so that was why the change in

the second set. We hope to learn from our mistakes and play hard for our country”.

Coach of Barbados, Ludger Niles indicated “we know that it was important to start with

a victory, we are a strong unit. I was able to give all my players a chance to play,

which I believe that early in a tournament like this one gives us confidence”.

“My players were nervous and our setter didn’t make his job, that was why I had to

adjust in the second set but that meant to lose an attack. We have the difficulty to

only practice and not have preparation matches for this kind of tournament which in

the end makes the difference” said John Van Der Lee Coach of Aruba.

Barbados inicia con victoria sobre Aruba

GRAN CAIMAN, Islas

Caimán, 6 de octubre

de 2012.- Barbados

arrancó la Primera

Ronda NORCECA Grupo

E Clasificatoria al

Campeonato Mundial

2014 de la FIVB con

victoria de 3-0 (25-10,

25-18, 25-14) sobre

Aruba.

Barbados tuvo un

desempeño firme como

era esperado. Shawn

Simpson produjo 15

Barbados remains undefeated

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman

Islands, October 6, 2012. -

Barbados won 3-1 (25-21, 21-

25, 25-22, 25-19) over

Suriname to remain undefeated

at the NORCECA Round I Group

E 2014 FIVB Men’s World

Championship Qualification.

Barbados has a 2-0 win-loss

record while Suriname registers

1-1. A thrilling match with a

very tight score in which the

sets were similar, even though Barbados took the first set, Surinam pushed strong and

was able to tie. However, Barbados dominated Surinam in the end with a small

difference in all their stats, advantage (12-10) in blocking, equal number in serving

points (5-5) and superior in attack (57-52).

Once again, Shawn Simpson was the top scorer for Barbados with double digits, 30

points, 27 sere attacks; Fabian Cox followed with 15 points, while Akeem Payne

chipped in with 14. For Suriname, Keven Sporkslede lead the scores with 28 points, 26

were by attack and 2 in blocks.

Jamaal Nedd for the winners expressed “we have improved bit by bit, Suriname

pushed us which is pretty good for our team and I congratulate them, it was a pretty

good game, it was good volleyball.”

“First I want to congratulate Barbados, I think that the difference in the end was our

lack of experience compared to them” said Roberto Javal captain of Suriname.

Barbados’ coach, Ludger Niles believes they’ll meet again with Suriname on Sunday

afternoon so they have to do some mental work as they are looking forward to the

final match, “we were off in our defense on top of the net, so there’s still room for

improvement as they took advantage of this aspect and they gave us a good fight”.

Niles ended by giving credit to his second setter because he ran the offense well.

Jerry Slijngard indicated that even with the loss he feels it was a pleasant game, “we

tried to prepare well but as you could see in the last points of each set the players of

Barbados knew how to close and for this I agree that experience was the key and we’ll

try to correct what we did wrong”.

Barbados se mantiene invicto

GRAN CAIMAN, Islas Caimán, 6

de octubre de 2012.- Barbados

ganó 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22,

25-19) sobre Surinam

permaneciendo invicto en la

Primera Ronda NORCECA

Clasificatoria Grupo E al Mundial

Masculino de la FIVB 2014.

Barbados tiene un record de 2-0

en victorias mientras que

Surinam registra 1-1.

Aruba claims first win in five sets

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman

Islands, October 6, 2012. -

Aruba defeated Cayman

Islands by score of 3-2 (25-

17, 17-25, 23-25, 25-18,

15-10) and claimed their

first win at the NORCECA

Round I Group E 2014 FIVB

Men’s World Championship

Qualification.

The game had its difficulties

as both squads were

anxious to claim their first

victory in the tournament.

Aruba demanded their maximum effort to win the last match of the day. Aruba was

better in service points (7-4) but lower on the blocking side (13-17).

With 20 points, Daniel Mitchel and with 19 points Meermans Frank topped Aruba’s

scorers. Olney Thompson was the best for Cayman Islands with 19 points and Martin

Bodden tallied 16.

“We lost our first match because things didn’t turn out well but as a team we worked

together to keep up our moral to face Cayman Islands, I’m proud of my teammates

and of my coach” expressed Aruba’s captain Eargenell De Cuba.

Olney Thompson for the hosts said “both teams played well, anyone could have won,

it’s just unfortunate that we lost but we must put it behind, go home and get some

rest and think about the next step to move forward.”

John Van Der Lee made emphasis in that this is Aruba’s first international match in

four years and it was difficult to prepare, “I told my guys to forget about the mornings’

loss, and they performed well. Tomorrow we will face Suriname who we haven´t

played against for ten years and the plan is to win”.

Keith Higgins head coach of Cayman Islands indicated “we played a good match but

when it came to crucial points we couldn’t take control, there was a mix up in the last

point, nevertheless we were already behind. The truth is that we need to play better in

order to win and not only do some things right like our blocking.”

Mañana enfrentamos a

nuestro bloqueo”.
