Now Here‛s A Tip by JoAnn Derson• Try this tip to avoid overeating at parties: Keep a drink in your dominant hand. You’ll be less likely to graze on high-fat chips and other snack foods. Need a little something? Hope for a veggie platter. But wheth-er it’s veggies or chips, grab a couple and then WALK AWAY from the table before you can hit the dip.• Hairspray spritzed on the end of a thread will stiff-en it long enough to get it through a needle head. You also can thread your needle in front of a surface that’s an opposing color (e.g., a white piece of paper while threading a needle with black thread).• “When shopping for seamless bras, bring a Tshirt that is relatively tightfi tting to wear over the bras. You will know right away if there are seam lines or if the cup is too small. These issues sometimes get overlooked when a bra is worn under a looser shirt.” — E.D. in Ontario, Canada• Gotta keep those buns warm? Line your crockpot with foil and add the buns. Keep on low or warm, and place on the buffet. Yum. ©2012 King Features

DEAR PAW’S CORNER:My German shepherd,“Silky,” is 10 years old and has developed hip dysplasia, which makes her pretty uncomfort-able. She avoids slippery fl oors and she hates the tub, but I need to give her a bath. Can I do this and keep her comfort-able? - Jack T., Okla-homa CityDEAR JACK: Try plac-ing a large, wet towel in the tub that she can stand on to gain traction. Lift her into the high-sid-ed tub rather than make her jump in. Shepherds are large dogs, so you may need help. A step-in shower is an even better option, if you have one. An infl atable kiddie pool works well. This gives big dogs enough room to sit or even lie down during their bath. During the bath itself it’s important to work fast. Keep Silky’s collar and leash on so you can hold her still as you wet her down. Talk soothingly through the whole pro-cess. Once complete, lift her out of the tub onto a nonslip rug and towel- dry her fur, then give her lots of praise and a treat. ©2012 King Features
That’s Something CURIOUS by F. Will
With the steady stream of blue words that play on our televisions; With the vulgarity that has worked its way into casual conversation; We seem to have developed a tolerance for every word except for one. Not a four-letter word that anyone was taught not to say as a child. No one has had their mouth washed out with soap because of its utterance. It’s not on the list of forbidden words for retail clerks or service spe-cialists. Even so, we all know that if we say this word we may have a fi ght on our hands. The word is... wait. No, wait! That’s the word, “wait.” If you are over 50 years old you have probably spent 5 years waiting in lines. That’s something curious. Someone estimated that Americans spend 37 billion hours waiting in line each year. I’ve been in a few lines that felt that long. If you were asked to estimate the time spent waiting in a line you’ll prob-ably overestimate by 36% because it feels longer. The longest wait that I read about is for Green Bay Pack-ers season tickets. That wait is estimated at 956 years. How long the line feels is of prime importance. If you move through a line more quickly than expected, you’re pleased. It feels like a victory. Have you ever been at an amusement park that has those wait estimate signs. The sign says one hour and fi fteen minutes from this point. Forty-fi ve minutes later you’re screaming your lungs out on the fi rst downhill. You may have left your stomach at the top of that hill but you’re feeling pretty good about the decision to go ahead and wait. After all, you beat their estimate. You’ll be able to ride more stuff with the extra time. Not all waiting is created equal. Unoccupied waiting is far worse that occupied waiting. If you have something to distract you while you wait, it goes much better. A headline on a periodical about how miserable a certain movie star’s home-life has become may shorten the perceived wait. And there’s something soothing in fi nding that a popular musi-cian has aged badly, has gained 50 pounds, or has constructed a landing platform for UFOs. A great deal of research has been done to make sure that your waiting time is as short as possible... Or to make you think that it’s shorter. My favorite story is about an airport that had many complaints from passengers waiting for their baggage. Extra baggage handlers were hired and the average waiting time dropped, but the complaints continued. After some research they tried something different. They sent the baggage to a different carousel that was farther away from the gate. No more complaints. The total amount of time to retrieve their bags remained the same but the walk was six times farther. Would that make their waiting 36% healthier? ©2013 WBB

Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and con-tain your food. The other dishes are mine and con-tain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I fi nd that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
To all non-pet owners who complain about our pets:•They live here. You don’t.•If you don’t want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That’s why they call it ‘fur’-niture.•I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.•To you, they ar e animals. To me, they ar e adopted sons/daughters who ar e short, hair y, walk on all fours and don’t speak clearly.
To My Cat: For the last time, there is no secr et exit fr om the bathr oom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and man-age to get the door shut, it is not necessar y to claw, whine, meow , tr y to tur n the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

Weaknesses And Strengthsby David C. Egner
Read: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10Out of weakness [they] were made strong. Hebrews 11:34I’m always amused when I watch the loons lift into fl ight of f Piatt Lake in Michigan’s upper peninsula. They half-run, half-fl ap across the water for hundreds of feet befor e getting enough speed to lift into the air. I wondered why until I lear ned that unlike most birds, loons have solid bones. Their added weight makes it diffi cult for them to get airborne.I also learned that loons are clumsy on land because their legs ar e set far ther back on their bodies than other birds. Walking is so dif fi cult that many loons simply scoot acr oss land to their nesting places. But these disadvantages—heavy bones, legs set far back—are also tr emendous advantages. Because of their weight and leg placement, loons can dive deep-er, far ther, and faster . This is essential for catching fi sh and escaping predators. What we see as disadvantages in our lives can be turned into advantages, and appar ent weaknesses can be transformed into strengths. That was tr ue of the apostle Paul, whose “thor n in the fl esh” became an oppor tunity for God’s str ength to be seen in his weakness (2 Cor. 12:7-9).Is a weakness holding you down? Is it shyness or a physical limitation? Ask God to turn it into a strength for His glory.
Inadequate but mighty—How strange, yet wholly true!
Weak persons fi lled with powerThe Father’s work shall do. —HGB

MORE CONTESTS part 1 We just finished a column on contests and
sent it out. In came Audubon Magazine with their issue of a Fourth Annual Bird Picture contest. This is the January/February issue and while they show the top winners, you can see the top 100 entries at audubonmagazine.org. The article says that 900 photographers en-tered the contest which started in May. There were some 6,000 pictures entered. Check out the website, there will be information there as to next year’s contest, as well as what other pho-tographers have done. Entries were judged in professional, amateur and youth categories. Not only was there a Grand Prize Winner, but sever-al awards were given as Editor’s Choice. Of the winners pictured, 6 were taken with Can-on cameras and 3 with Nikons. The youth win-ner was done with a Minolta Dimage, an old dig-ital model that evidently still works well enough to win. As you would guess, most of the shots were taken with long lens. Several at 1/1000 of a second and some with both lenses and tele converter. While the 2 top shots showed a tree in the background, quite a few had plain back-grounds, as if they were shot into the sky.

Even More Tips• Don’t have a lot of extra r oom on your page? T ry using your fi rst 2 wor ds of your Journaling as a title. They don’t have to be real big, just make them bolder and a little bigger to draw a little more attention to it.• Want more energy on your page? Try tilting your photos, embellishments, and even titles to make your eye fl oat around the page.• Is your backgr ound too busy and drowning out your photos? T ry adding a piece of vellum over your backgr ound. It can mute it just enough to bring the focus back to your pictures. • Try an old school look! Use a white bor der and cut it out to make it look like a pola-riod photo. T rying using this idea on a page with black and white pictures.
