1 B ULLFLOAT President’s Message It is an honor for me to be able to serve as Chapter President for 2013. Four years ago when I was asked to be on the Board of Directors, I only had limited interaction and experience with the Chapter. Since then, I have realized how important and valuable the Chapter can be in our industry. We currently have 177 members who consist of a highly diversified group of contractors, engineers, material suppliers, testing agencies, architects, technical society members, and students. The experience and knowledge base of our membership provides a great resource for our industry in day to day challenges and the social interaction provides for new and strengthened business relationships. The diversity of this group also provides many opinions and great interactions at our meetings. During my time on the Board of Directors, I have also had the honor of working around many great people and would like to make a couple notable mentions of honor. I would like to thank Ken Lozen of NTH Consultants for his 26 years of dedicated service to the Chapter. Ken was honored at our 2012 Annual Meeting and presented with the Chapter’s distinguished Arthur Y. Moy Memorial Award. The Board also presented him with an award for his distinguished service. Thank you Ken for so many years of dedication and service and congratulations on your awards! Our former Chapter Secretary (now Treasurer) Tony Johnson of CRSI has been selected as the recipient for the 2013 ACI Chapter Activities Award and will be presented at the Spring 2013 Convention in Minneapolis. Congratulations Tony! I would also like to thank Tony Candiloro for his contributions as last year’s president. We had a successful year and I am pleased to announce we were awarded Outstanding Chapter for 2012. Thank you, Tony for your dedication and leadership. Our Board of Directors strives to provide you with a stream of meetings with interesting and relevant topics presented by high caliber speakers. If you have been inactive, I encourage you to attend. In 2012, we had an average attendance of over 60 attendees and as high as 78 at any individual meeting! This is outstanding and I am glad to see the active participation. In addition to the business, we also like to have some fun. We are resuming our Tiger’s Game night on June 21st against the Red Sox. Be sure to join us on the Dew Deck with family, friends, and colleagues. Our 5th annual golf outing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18th and we are out to provide another great Annual Meeting so be sure to keep an eye out for these great events. ACI Student Chapter - Lawrence Tech

We are proud to announce the formation of an ACI Student Chapter at Lawrence Technological University. After hard work and dedication from a number of graduate and undergraduate students, the student chapter received their charter at the Spring 2012 Convention in Dallas, Texas.

Students from Lawrence Tech regularly attend the monthly meetings held by the Greater Michigan Chapter. At the November meeting, with many students and alumni in attendance, the GMC presented the LTU-ACI student chapter with their banner.

ACI is one of the few professional organizations on campus that has active involvement and collaboration between the

College of Engineering and the College of Architecture.

In late February, the LTU chapter was informed that they received the great honor of being named a 2012 Outstanding University by ACI International. This is a huge accomplishment for a first-year chapter and they are being recognized at the 2013 Spring Convention in Minneapolis, MN. Additionally, a team of four students will be participating in the FRP Composites Competition at the National Convention this spring. If you would like to help the student competition team with their travel to Minneapolis in April by providing a monetary donation, please contact Brittany Schuel at [email protected] or (616)560-8089.

The LTU-ACI Chapter would like to thank the ACI Greater Michigan Chapter for the support they have given us throughout the last year and we look forward to a continued partnership for many years to come.

Lawrence Tech University student representatives are presented with the ACI Student Chapter Banner. LTU Alumni and ACI GMC Board members in attendance also posed for the photo-graph.

2012 Annual Meeting

A car enthusiast or not, the 2012 Annual Meeting of the ACI Greater Michigan Chapter was certainly one of the best yet. The event, held on Saturday December 8th at the General Motors Heritage Center was attended by 91 people, and by all accounts, everyone had a great time.

Throughout the evening, attendees were free to roam and explore the exhibits which included 160 of the Heritage Center’s collection of approximately 600 historic vehicles. Which one was your favorite? The collection includes rarities such as the first electric self-starter used on the 1912 Cadillac, the first production V8 that powered the 1915 Cadillac, and the first air bag found on 1974 Buick, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile models. Others are technological experiments like the first American gas turbine-powered car, Firebird 1, or the world's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle, the 1966 Electro-van. Concept cars and special-interest styling/performance one-of-a-kinds are part of the mix, along with significant race cars and milestone production vehicles such as the first production 1966 Olds Toronado featuring General Motors' front-wheel drive.

After a fabulous dinner, 2012 President, Tony Candiloro presided over the official 2012 ACI GMC Annual meeting which included a wrap up of chapter activities, summary of memberships and an official announcement of the 2013 Board of Directors ballot results. The program ended with

David Evangelista speaking briefly as the 2013 incoming president of the ACI Greater Michigan Chapter, before passing over to Tony Johnson for the presentation of the Chapters prestigious Moy Award, see article “Greater Michigan Chapter Honors Ken Lozen”.

Following the formalities, attendees were treated to a show from the last remaining component of the General Motors "Parade of Progress", a large, multi-faceted road show which began touring across the United States in 1936. Central to the Parade of Progress were the Futurliners, with their 16-foot side panels which folded out to form marquees and stage platforms. The General Motors Heritage Center has the only surviving Parade of Progress Futurliner display: "Our American Crossroads". Attendees were able to enjoy the 10-minute mechanically animated display which covered the period from 1900 to 1950 as small town America is transformed by the automobile. ACI GMC Golf Outing

BULLFLOATThe ACI Greater Michigan Chapter hosted its 4th annual “One Last Summer Blast” golf outing on September 19, 2012. Over sixty golfers competed in this years event held at Fox Hills Golf and Banquet Center in Plymouth MI. Friends and colleagues gathered at the Margaritaville themed event to say so long to summer and show off their most radical tropical attire.

The returning champion Barton Malow team of Joe Benvenuto, Mike Mueller, Cesar Diaz, and Kevin Zeleji took home the top prize again this year. With a thirteen under par score of 59 they beat out the GRT team of Steve Carnacci, Chris Carnacci, Eric Taylor, and Scott Brayton by just one stroke. Other winners on the day were Paul Lemanski (Closest to the pin), Mike Mueller (Longest drive), and Eric Taylor (Closest to the beach ball).

The ACI Greater Michigan Chapter would like to once again thank all of our golf outing sponsors. Without your generous donations, our outing would not be a success. Also we would like to thank the individuals that organize the outing. Keep up the good work guys!

Please mark your calendar and get your Hawaiian shirts ready for the 5th annual “One Last Summer Blast” golf outing on September 18, 2013 at Fox Hills. www.acigmc.org
