STRONG OFFENSE HELPSICERAYS TO WIN OVERBULLS, 5-3 Michaud &LaBurn score twice; Spillumearns first NAHL goal
The Corpus Christi IceRays (25-14-5)scored four unanswered crossingover two periods to help claim a 5-3win over the Amarillo Bulls(17-24-4) on Friday night from theAmarillo Civic Center. The IceRayshave now won five of their last sixgames including five-straight awayfrom the American Bank Center,and their 45 shots is the highestmark of the season. The game didnot start well for the IceRays afterforward Connor Kelly took a penaltyfor checking from behind early,allowing the Bulls to create achance on the power play. ForwardCody Gylling redirected a shot fromdefenseman Kasper Emanuelssonat 2:28 to help give the Bulls a 1-0lead. Less than a minute later at3:15, defenseman Joe Leonidasripped a shot from the left point
that snuck through a number ofskaters and doubled the lead, 2-0.After killing off two penalties tostart the second period, the IceRayscaught a break with Bulls forwardElijah Barriga being called for afive-minute major penalty and agame misconduct. Forward NicLaBurn capitalized at 6:37 in thepower play to draw within one, 2-1.Just before the halfway mark,IceRays defenseman KeenanSpillum launched his first NAHL goalwith a wrist shot from the left pointto tie the game, 2-2. Less than aminute later at 10:06, LaBurn foundhis second of the night by drawingnetminder Jacob Weatherly out ofposition and giving the IceRays a3-2 lead. While the IceRays were onthe penalty kill, play developed forforward Wes Michaud shorthandedat 5:32, and with a beautiful spinaround Weatherly, Michaud slottedhis first shorthanded goal andforced the IceRays ahead, 4-2. TheBulls answered at 9:15 with ashorthanded goal from Gylling toget back within one, 4-3. Michaud
capped off the night for the IceRayswith an empty net goal at 11:52 tohelp earn the 5-3 win. IceRaysnetminder Andrew Lindgren(18-8-3) earned the win, turningaway 18 of 21 shots, whileWeatherly (7-12-3) drops the losswhile stopping 40 of 44 shots. TheIceRays head back on the road onFriday, Feb. 13 to begin a two-gameset against the Amarillo Bulls at7:05 p.m. from the Amarillo CivicCenter.
