Bumi Sehat Healthy Mother Earth Foundation 2018 Field ReportPrepared by Ibu Robin
The sun has set on 2018, and it is time to thank all of our donors, caring friends, family, patients, scholars and team members, for the loving support you showered upon Bumi Sehat this past year.
In 2018, natural disasters increased the need for our health and human services…Bali’s Volcano, Gunung Agung, erupted many times in 2018; though less violently than in 2017. Volcanologists report that our volcano is once again in an eruptive phase. In response, Bumi Sehat, with the generosity of Earth Company and Hinoki of Japan, is currently building our long dreamed of Disaster Relief Resource Center. This quake resistant building will function as our Bumi Sehat Youth Education Center and, during times of disaster and emergency, will serve to house and give relief to evacuees in duress.

Sulawesi DisastersOn September 28th, a quake near the provincial capital of Palu, magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck Central Sulawesi, resulting in a tsunami that devastated the region. In the aftermath, 2,256 people were confirmed dead, over 10,000 injured, and an uncounted number of people are still missing. The foreshocks, the huge earthquake, and hundreds of aftershocks caused liquefaction: (A frightening disaster, in which water infused sandy soil, shaken by earthquakes, causes buildings and anything standing to slip, slide and sink into the earth).
Lombok EarthquakeOn August 4th, a week after the 6.4 earthquake left the island of Lombok, Bali’s closest neighbor, reeling from the damage, it was devastated by a 7.0 quake. Hundreds perished, 417,00 people were left homeless. Bumi Sehat responded with a medical team led by Midwife Budi. On August 19th,our team, along with Gordon of Direct Relief, experienced firsthand the shock of major earthquakes, when shakers of 6.5 and a 7.0 again traumatized Northern Lombok.
Aftershocks and torrential rains continue to plague survivors, who now face outbreaks of malaria. The hospitals and government health centers were either reduced to rubble or are teetering on the verge of collapse. In North Lombok, 80% of the homes and structures were destroyed. With assistance from Direct Relief International and Earth Company/Hinoki, Bumi Sehat has a team of Nurses and Midwives, working 24/7 out of tents, providing desperately needed medical relief.
Sulawesi also suffered a volcanic eruption, flashfloods of mud, landslides, and even hail! These combined disasters were the deadliest worldwide in 2018. In the aftermath 206,524 people have become refugees, scattered throughout the region, mostly living in makeshift shelters under tarps and tents, in open fields, without access to water or sanitation. Direct Relief International’s immediate response has made it possible for Bumi Sehat to bring medical relief to sick, injured and pregnant evacuees in Sulawesi.
Philippines... Also, in September 2018, Typhoon Mangkut, a category 5 super storm, struck the Northern Philippine Island of Luzon. Bumi Sehat, via the help of Earth Company, was able to provide funding to feed people left homeless.

Bumi Sehat Bali Our Mother Ship Community Health and Childbirth Center in Bali, continues to be the heart of our humanitarian services. While providing over 58,000 incidents of health, education and human services, team Bumi Sehat Bali coordinated disaster relief services for over 52,000 people.
We are open 24/7… the healing begins with a hug. Temporary shelter is always a critical issue for the many left homeless as a result of natural disasters. https://www.justonetent.org: created by our Bumi Sehat family helps visitors to Bali play a direct role in providing relief by giving a tent to one of the tens of thousands of homeless families in disaster zones.
Bumi Sehat Acehis open and thriving while undergoing repairs and maintenance. For over 14 years we have been an undiminished light, providing free health, education and human services, still helping heal the broken hearts that were at the epicenter of the 2004 earthquake and tsunami disaster.
Angel Hiromi PapuaOur Bumi Sehat Birth Center in Sentani, PapuaAlmost there. We still need funds from compassionate hearts for beds, medical equipment, and supplies, so we can open in 2019. Special Terima kashi to Maruyama san, and his devotion to Hiromi’s vision of LOVE.

With the support of Direct Relief International will soon break ground on the Bahay Arugaan ni Maria (Caring Home of Maria) Childbirth Center in Palawan. This beautiful island has extremely high morbidity and mortality rates. We have 2 hectares of fruitful land and our goal is to complete this center in 2019.

Bumi Sehat Scholarship ProgramThis year Gede Dilla Nirmalasari from Ubud, Bali and Irmawati from Sumba graduated from their Midwife school, Poltekes Negeri Bali and STIKES Kartini Denpasar after 3 years of intensive education.
A sincere gratitude to Jenny Burgass and Lyn Leeder for their continues support and generosity in inspiring the younger generations to reach their dreams.
Dilla and Irma Graduation Ceremony
In 2018 we cried many tears of joy for the arrival of beautiful babies…
including my newest grandson, Bear! …Midwife Wyn Sudarni’s granddaughter, our HIV Counselor Eka’s baby boy, Lab Tech Erni’s baby girl, Midwives Wayanik and Kadek Ari also had baby girls. We rejoiced when our medical team provided compassionate care, helping the injured and sick to thrive. We have been proud to see our scholarship student midwives, Irma and Dila, complete their education and begin work as healthcare professionals.
We cried tears of sorrow when our dear brothers, Olivier, Sicco van Boetzelaer, Matthew, Bartolemew, Bryan and Chip, passed away. We still mourn Midwife Ibu Dewa, along with our sisters Rosie in Iowa, Jenni Williams and young Kadek. In life these souls helped Bumi Sehat, now they serve as inspiration to carry on with LOVE’s good work.
Because each of you reading this has supported our work, 2018 was a blessed year. Even in the face of eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and typhoons, we stood together, stronger and more committed than ever. Sometimes it is the windstorms of life, that teach us to how deeply we LOVE.
