Monsignor Michael Keating Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral

My Dear People,

Since the Grand Opening of our Cathedral last year I have been very happy to see how wonderfully it has been received and visited by thousands of people each week. They continue to comment on its beauty and how prayerful it is.

I can only agree.

I marvel at the grace of the Cathedral building as I see it each day from my window, and I am moved by the quiet hushed interior as I enter it. The architecture and the artists have honoured the sacred mysteries that are celebrated there.

This Christmas, I hope the joy of Christ’s birth will bring peace and hope to all who come to the Cathedral to thank God for the gift of his divine Son at Bethlehem.

I remember with gratitude the overwhelming support and generosity of the thousands of people who made it all possible and wish you all a happy and Holy Christmas.

Dear Friends,

In the last few months I have welcomed thousands of people to our Cathedral – huge groups of school students, which have included young people from Catholic, Government and Religious Schools.

There have been many groups of elderly people from Rest Homes and a significant number of overseas visitors – indeed a constant stream of people visit our Cathedral.

Many come to worship at the weekends and there have been numerous special Masses, concerts and other celebrations. In this, the 2nd edition of our newsletter, you will discover photos from these events, so you can share in all the joy. I feel so privileged to be part of this “world class” Cathedral, as recent visitors called it.

I love our closeness to Royal Perth Hospital and daily many patients, their relatives and the staff visit us. It is a happy chance that we, the Hospital and the Cathedral, stand side by side. The possibilities for the future and the involvement of the Cathedral with the City of Perth are endless.

I want all the people who visit to feel at peace and at home, in “their” Cathedral.

People like to come and relax in the grounds or inside and find peace. Many prefer to light a candle and feel the presence of God in this beautifully restored and renovated Cathedral.

Everyone is welcome at St Mary’s Cathedral. We have two Masses daily at 8.00am and 12.10pm and of course, many weekend Masses.

The word “Cathedral” comes from the Latin “Cathedra” – the teaching seat of our present Archbishop Barry Hickey, who courageously undertook the restoration and completion of “our” Cathedral. While gratefully remembering past Clergy and everyone who has contributed so much, I do hope present generations will continue to support this great building honouring Our Lady.

The cost of this building and its important restoration was $32.9 million, and we have now raised from our fundraising efforts, just over $30.2 million. Gifts over $2 in value to the St Mary’s Cathedral Appeal are tax deductible... I ask you to please, be generous.

God bless you and yours.

Archbishop Speaks to Priests at Chrism MassOn Holy Tuesday evening, around 150 priests of the Archdiocese joined their Archbishop and Bishop Sproxton to celebrate the Chrism Mass, at which the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of Chrism were blessed.

Archbishop Hickey spoke to the assembled priests personally in his Homily, reminding them that the priesthood they share is the one and same priesthood of Christ the Head and Shepherd.

In the priesthood of Christ, they are called to imitate Christ as leaders of their local community and in the pastoral care of the people entrusted to them.

The Archbishop said that this calling to be as Christ the Head and Shepherd to their community is a high ideal. At times it might seem unachievable, but this should never lessen the desire to strive for the ideal.

I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of Thy House ,and the place where Thy Glory dwelleth

Psalm 26.8

In the first issue of the OUR CATHEDRAL newsletter, we shared with you many of the wonderful events which had taken place since the official re-opening in 2009.

On the 8th of December 2010, we celebrate the first birthday of “our” Cathedral, since emerging from its historic restoration and ultimate completion.

What a simply wonderful first year it has been.

Archbishop Hickey and Monsignor Keating have been overwhelmed by the significant number of visitors the Cathedral attracts each day, each week.

Our Cathedral is “alive” with people attending daily and weekend Masses, couples getting married, families celebrating baptisms, school students and teachers on special visits, music and art festivals and interstate and overseas travellers marvelling at the beauty.

AprilWithout exception, people have enthusiastically embraced St Mary’s Cathedral and it is fulfilling its role as a welcoming place for all people.

In the following pages, we hope to share with you the wonderful events and activities which have taken place at the Cathedral.

Archbishop Celebrates

Easter MassSt Mary’s Cathedral hosted huge crowds of worshippers for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil.

There was standing room only for the 11.00am Mass on Easter Sunday.

These photos don’t really do justice to showing just how joyous these special celebrations were.

Aquinas College Students Prepare for Confirmations

A group of year 6 boys from Aquinas College accompanied by their teachers and the School Chaplain, Rev Father Dat Vuong, took a grand tour of St Mary’s Cathedral as part of the boys preparation for the Sacrament of their Confirmation.

They were warmly welcomed by Monsignor Michael Keating and his assistant priests, Father Jean-Noel Marie and Father Jeronimo Castillo Flamenco.

We are encouraged to pray for all students across the Archdiocese of Perth who are preparing for Confirmation .

Trinity College Celebrates 1st Confirmations at New Cathedral

Around 60 students from Trinity College were the first group to be confirmed by Archbishop Hickey in St Mary’s Cathedral since its restoration and completion.

Mr Gordon Dean, Assistant Head RE said:

“Trinity College was indeed very privileged to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. We had sixty Year 6 boys, two Trinity Senior School students and one Mercedes student receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The stunning evening was the climax of many weeks of preparation. Confirmation at Trinity College is always a very special community event, and to be the first group to celebrate the sacrament of confirmation at the newly renovated and extended Cathedral was something that the boys were very privileged to be a part of.

We are very grateful to Archbishop Barry Hickey and Father Oscar Aguilera for being our celebrants on the night. The spectacular venue enabled more family and friends to share in the celebration. It was a wonderful way to encourage further involvement of the extended family in such an important event for the boys. The atmosphere at the Cathedral was prayerful and all who attended would agree that the beautiful environment enriched an integral part of the candidates’ faith journeys.”

Recital Marks 100th Anniversary of Cathedral Pipe Organ2010 saw the launch of the Inaugural St Mary’s Cathedral Concert Series - an exciting new venture for the Cathedral involving a series of three of the Cathedral’s own concerts.

The series was launched by a concert on 30 May celebrating the 100th birthday of the Cathedral’s Dodd organ. Built in 1910 by Josiah Eustace Dodd (1856-1952) it is one of Perth’s most historic organs and one of the last remaining examples of Dodd’s large-scale works. Dodd was one of the pioneers of the Australian organ-building industry who built prolifically during his lifetime.

The concert was given by the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Jacinta Jakovcevic, and involved an aural trip into yesteryear: the programme was a partial re-enactment of the original opening recital in 1910. As a result of the historic restoration of this instrument by the South Island Organ Company during 2007-2009, the organ was able to play these works almost exactly as they would have sounded in 1910 - a very rare and unique event.

The concert programme was interspersed with commentaries by Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth - these commentaries included anecdotes about the organ’s building in 1910, and the life and times of St Mary’s Cathedral and the community of Perth around this historic time.

Evangelisation Centre Proposed

Archbishop Hickey met with more than 60 invited guests to outline his vision for the establishment of a Centre to promote Evangelisation in the Archdiocese of Perth.

His Grace said the priority of such a centre would be to evangelise first and foremost “unbelievers”. Secondly, the centre would seek out “faraway Catholics” and thirdly seek to assist in defending the faith of believers.

The Archbishop plans for the Centre to have a city base that provides an “open door”, a warm welcome to all inquirers and reaches out into the streets of the City. The Centre will provide courses in the Catholic faith as well as Bible Study groups. It will also produce resources for such groups that will be shared with parishes in the Archdiocese. A resource library will also be part of the centre.

The Centre will be staffed by a director and administrative secretary and encourage volunteers to share in this important apostolate.

More than 1500 people “absolutely packed” St Mary’s Cathedral to joyously celebrate the Canonisation of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop – Australia’s first recognised Saint.

Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, Most Rev Donald Sproxton, warmly welcomed special guests which included:

The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, His Excellency, Dr Ken Michael, The Governor of Western Australia & Mrs Michael,The Hon Colin Barnett, Premier of Western Australia, The Hon Kate Doust, Shadow Minister for Energy, Science and Innovation,The Rt Hon Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi and Mr Joseph Scaffidi,

It was a beautiful occasion with many guests commenting on the superb music and choir, and the inspirational and heartfelt Homily delivered by Bishop Sproxton.

After the Mass, parishioners were served a cup of tea, coffee and a biscuit on the Southern Piazza, whilst special guests gathered in the parish centre for hospitality.

Special acknowledgment and thanks to Bishop Don and his hard working team on making this such a magical and memorable celebration for all...

Funeral of

Father Stephen Edward DurkinAt the Requiem Mass for the late Father Stephen Edward Durkin (deceased Parish Priest of Maida Vale) Archbishop Hickey, Bishop Sproxton, 60 priests and deacons of the Archdiocese, as well as Father Stephen’s parents, family and friends, prayed for the repose of the soul of Father Stephen.

In his Homily, His Grace said that Father Stephen was well known for his Homilies, but he spoke most eloquently through the personal witness and faith he showed in the last months of his life.

Talking about the life of his brother, Bernard Durkin gave all present an insight into a loving son, brother and priest. Bernard Durkin said that in the days before his brother died, Father Stephen spoke about how he would be waiting in heaven to meet us all again, especially his mother and father whom he pre-deceased.

As in the lyrics of the song Father Stephen personally chose for the recessional, Father Stephen has gone to the “place that is best”, to the “Spirit in the Sky”.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Monsignor Keating Celebrates Performing Arts Festival Opening MassThe Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral, Monsignor Michael Keating, represented the Archbishop as the principal celebrant at the con-celebrated Opening Mass of the 21st Annual Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges.

The concelebrating priests were Father Christopher Ross OSM and Cathedral Assistant Priests, Father Jeronimo Flamenco and Father Jean-Noel Marie. They were joined by representatives, staff and students from Catholic Schools and Colleges throughout the Archdiocese of Perth.

The singing was led by the choir of Liwara Catholic Primary School and the students also celebrated the opening liturgical movement. Students from Sacred Heart College Sorrento celebrated a post-communion liturgical movement titled “In the Arms of an Angel”.

After the Post Communion Prayer, Major Ian Milne (Ret) officially opened the 21st Annual Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges.

Catenian Association’s Generous GiftArchbishop Hickey and Monsignor Keating welcomed guests from the Catenian Association of Western Australia for a private tour of the Cathedral.

Terry Pilcher (Provincial President), Gerry Barton (Director) and Brian Kerman (Member) were delighted to represent the Association, and the opportunity of seeing first hand, the result of the Cathedral’s 3 year restoration and completion.

At the conclusion of the tour, the Association presented a cheque to His Grace for $15,000 in support of the Cathedral fundraising appeal.

On behalf of the Catenian Members, President Terry Pilcher said:

Archbishop & Monsignor Thank Prime MinisterIn the lead-up to the recent Federal Election, the Archbishop, Monsignor Keating and Father Cross, met with The Hon Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and the (then) Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member for Perth, The Hon Stephen Smith.

The meeting was to be held at St Mary’s Cathedral to show the Prime Minister the recent restoration and completion work. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the meeting was relocated at the last minute to the Prime Minister's Perth accommodation.

Both the Archbishop and Monsignor took the opportunity to thank the Prime Minister and Minister for the generous financial support provided by the Australian Government for the completion and historic restoration of the Cathedral, and expressed a hope that the Prime Minister would be able to tour “our” beautiful Cathedral at some future date.

Winter Arts Season Comes to CathedralA wonderful performance of Sir Michael Tippett's A Child of Our Time was enjoyed by around 800 people in St Mary's Cathedral.

The wonderful acoustics and setting of the Cathedral enhanced the performance of this spiritual choral work.

The performance was conducted by Mr Peter Tanfield with soloists Sarah Guilmartin (Soprano), Caitlin Cassidy (Alto), Matthew Reardon (Tenor) and Ryan Sharp (Bass).

They were joined by the Faith Court Orchestra, Classical Voice and John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School Choir.

First Ordinations in New Cathedral

The first Ordinations to the Priesthood (since the re-opening of the completed Cathedral) were celebrated by Archbishop Hickey on the Feast of the Transfiguration.

The two young men ordained were Fr Benny Calanza from the Philippines and Fr Rodrigo Tomala from Ecuador. Both underwent their formation at the Neo-Catechumenal Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary of Redemptoris Mater in Morley.

Several of Fr Calanza’s and Fr Tomala’s family were able to be present at the Ordinations. They were joined by many members of the Neo-Catechumenal communities as well as Bishop Sproxton and about 60 priests.

On Tuesday 9 November, more than 850 representatives from every Catholic School in the Archdiocese, the Catholic Education Office of WA and other special guests, joined the Archbishop, Bishop Donald Sproxton and Monsignor Keating for:

“A Schools Appreciation Service & Memorial Garden Dedication” at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Monsignor Keating, Dean of the Cathedral and Chair of the Catholic Education Commission, expressed sincere thanks to Ron Dullard and the CEO, principals, staff, students and their families, for their generous support of the Cathedral’s restoration and completion appeal.

Schools raised more than $2.3 million during 2007-2009 – a simply remarkable effort!

The Archbishop officially opened and dedicated the new Schools Memorial Garden in the grounds of the Cathedral, an expression of his appreciation to all schools, and an enduring symbol of the link between Faith and Catholic Education.

Archbishop Hickey blesses and dedicates the Schools Memorial Garden.

This joyous event was organised to coincide with the (almost) first birthday celebration of the Cathedral’s re-opening in December 2009. Each school brought along a “birthday gift” contained in a brightly covered box, which during the service, was brought forward and presented to the Archbishop, Bishop and Monsignor.

We are delighted to announce that these gifts totalled an additional $106,617.10 in support of the appeal. What

can we say except a very big THANK YOU.

In return, the Archbishop, Bishop and Monsignor presented each school with a beautiful appreciation plaque designed by artist Glen Holst, which incorporated a small crucifix crafted from original 1865 timber recycled form the original Cathedral pews during its recent restoration.

After the service, everyone gathered in the parish centre and underground parking area to share morning tea, and to cut a birthday cake and sing “Happy Birthday” to the Cathedral as it approaches its 1st (post-restoration) birthday!

Archbishop and students celebrate the Cathedral’s 1st birthday with cake.

Monsignor Keating presents Mr Ron Dullard, Director of the Catholic Education Office of WA, a plaque of appreciation.

Bishop Don thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

Appeal Manager’s Report

I cannot believe that a year has passed by so quickly. It seems like only yesterday that we were happily celebrating the official re-opening of St Mary’s Cathedral, after three long years of restoration and renovation.

As you have read and seen within this newsletter, “our” Cathedral is fulfilling, if not exceeding, its purpose as “a place of the people”.

I understand that almost 3000 visitors a week are once again attending Masses, meetings, special events, weddings, funerals, baptisms or just enjoying respite in the expansive landscaped grounds.

I am delighted to report that we have now raised in donations and pledges $30.2 million of the confirmed $32.9 million restoration and completion costs. It is important that as we rejoice in the “new life” our Cathedral has brought to the Archdiocese, that we remain focused on raising the remaining $2.7 million required.

Why? Because for every dollar we raise of this amount, it frees-up another dollar which the Archbishop can direct to the needs of the Seminary, the Clergy, Parishes or to provide welfare to people in need within our community.

There is most certainly a duality of benefit in your generosity. Let us not be complacent about meeting this outstanding obligation.

We have received more than 11,000 contributions from individual donors over the past 3 years - some gifts have been large, some have been a few dollars...

...But look at what has been achieved, together!

I respectfully ask each and every member of the Clergy, Parishioners, Religious Orders, Multicultural groups and Donors who have already generously supported this appeal, to consider making an additional small gift or pledge to help clear this debt in 2011.

You can make a donation online by credit card, or a single or monthly gift using the donation form opposite. You can pledge a gift over a period of time to fund the provision of a Pew ($8000) or an In Memoriam Gift ($10,000) in the memory of loved ones.

In May 2011, a special Recognition Memorial (acknowledging Leadership donors support) will be erected at St Mary’s Cathedral and officially dedicated by the Archbishop. This is YOUR last opportunity to be included in this Memorial.

I cannot think of a more fitting tribute for Archbishop Hickey, in what may be his final year as “our” Archbishop.

From my family to you and your families, we wish you a joyous Christmas.

Yours in service,

Brett A MendezAppeal Manager
