BUNDEENA MAIANBAR FOOTBALL CLUB PRESIDENT’S REPORT Another fantastic season for Bundeena Maianbar Football Club has come to a close; 2019 has been a year full of excellence and I would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank those who have volunteered and dedicated their time to BMFC, both on and off the field. Committee members, referees, canteen staff, our sponsors, the friends and family cheering on the sidelines on the cold mornings, and the players themselves. Bundeena Maianbar Football Club is a small club, gratefully supported and loved by the big hearts and spirits of our close-knit community, as a representation of this, we changed our club emblem back to something close to our hearts and heritage; the deer. We really have the community to thank for spurring us on during the season; the BMFC is a product of our environment and everyone’s hard work, determination, dedication and passion that supports our club season after season. Well done to everyone who has participated this year. As always, the mateship and comradery within the teams is amiable and is obvious during practices and game time. There has been so much personal growth this year that has been reflected with so much positivity on every individual involved. The level of growing talent, knowledge and perseverance that these teams have gained playing week in and week out is remarkable and cannot be praised enough. A true indicator of the bright future for the club is the undefeated season of our U11F team, an outstanding result. The club was challenged early in the season by the transfer of all Saturday morning matches to the main oval. Generally 2 doesn’t go into 1 very well but typically coaches, parents and players stepped up to ensure a smooth but rapid transition from different field sizes for different ages and the result could only be deemed very successful. Quite a feat, with all things considered an outstanding efforts! It was also fantastic to have all full days play with the Senior teams on a Sunday draw, it went a long way to contributing to the support of the club via canteen sales but in particular the great atmosphere generated by having so many competative teams playing one after the other, a very enjoyable social occasion on our door step. A big thank you also to the referees who came and did what is one of the most thankless jobs going around, thank you again. This year has been a year of immense growth for Bundeena Maianbar Football Club with many achievements behind us. Congratulations to everyone involved this season: you’re a credit to BMFC. With all that said , thank you to everyone who has made 2019 a fantastic one that it has been. Sharon Hodges BMFC President

BUNDEENA MAIANBAR FOOTBALL CLUB

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another fantastic season for Bundeena Maianbar Football Club has come to a close; 2019 has been a year full of excellence and I would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank those who have volunteered and dedicated their time to BMFC, both on and off the field.

This year has been a year of immense growth for Bundeena Maianbar Football Club with many achievements behind us.Congratulations to everyone involved this season: you’re a credit to BMFC.With all that said , thank you to everyone who has made 2019 a fantastic one that it has been.

REGISTRAR’S REPORT

2019 was the year we went digital and I’m so proud of the way everyone took it in their stride. We are the 3rd smallest club in the Sutherland Association we juggle competing interests when making up teams but we still get there.

We were up from 2018 with 230 players this year with 101 females and 129 males.

2020 registrations will be open as soon as the association will allow us. Please do not wait until other players register. The faster everyone registers the faster we can get a team to form. This happened this year and it was heart breaking to watch. Please register and if a team doesn’t end up forming then we can refund you. If you are not registered online, we can not count you as a player on he team.

I’d also like to say a huge thank you to the committee that spent hours upon hours of their time to assist with making up the teams. Not to mention our families that support us putting in these hours. It is no small job, please, if you have a small amount of time to assist us, please join the committee. Many hands make light work. The aim is always to ensure as many kids and adults as possible can get to play – sometimes this means too few subs and sometimes this means too many. It is heartening that the vast majority of parents take this in their stride and focus on ensuring their children have a great time playing the “beautiful game”. As the teams move through MiniRoos the size of the teams gets larger. In some age groups we could not make up teams without having a mixed side. By insisting on mixed gender sides from U6 we ensure the maximum number of kids get to play and are comfortable playing with teammates of varying ability – a reality they will have to confront as they move through the age groups. It is an approach that also fosters sportsmanship among our junior players and understanding the importance of teamwork. I would also like to say how proud we are of the U13 boys, U14 girls and AL05’s for making it to the finals. All teams gave it their best. The crowds at the lead up games were spectacular and the players certainly made it worth it. Go Deers!! It is an approach that also fosters sportsmanship among our junior players and understanding the importance of teamwork. Looking forward to an exciting 2020, let’s get our registrations in early to secure a spot for every player to participate in the team and age group they desire. There will be ample notice.

TEAM U6EWell done to our awesome team and what a great year it was for our Junior Deers! There was never a dull moment on the field, whether it be big swings (and no dings), a few sneaky elbows (to the opposition and our own team) and our never give up attitude and team morale. We had a few new players join us this year and Lewis Boomer Anderson joined us with a bang! Determined as always, a fantastic force field who ploughed through the defence eager to get the ball to the back of the net. Akira Stevill showed no mercy and chased down the opponent at every chance she got. Then there was Luxy Hannah who displayed great dedication and was a warrior on the field, never backing down. Ashton Lee (Speedy Gonzalas) came back with avengence this year and was truly outstanding on the field, always giving a 110 %. Anneliese Crumlin returned this year keen to show off her slide tackles and kicks any time she could. Miss Georgina Goody was solid in her defence and showed no fear when her presence was made on the field. And lastly Jake Smith who dodged every opponent with his swift ball skill and fancy footwork. It was such an enjoyable year and great effort from our team. A special thanks to our super coach Glenn for taking on the role again with great patience. #coachoftheyear. Thanks for an awesome year!

TEAM U6GThe 6G’s had a great season! It was the first season for most of the team and Coach

Simon did great job in teaching them the basics along with the two most important things to remember: have fun and support your teammates! Its definite that all the players on the team were much more developed at the end of the season compared to the start. Even at such an early stage, you can already see the team reading the game and gravitating to their natural positions. Knox and Ollie were superstars in defence, saving so many goals with their great blocking and tackling. Paige, Tommy, Sam and Elias were our midfield maestros, working hard to transition the ball from defence to attack. Pepper was our amazing attacker making the opposition

tremble with her ferocious kicks. Thanks to the families and supporters for making it such a great season and see you next year.

TEAM U6IWhen 6I started off the year we had 7 players; Darragh, Bronte, Ollie, Louisa, Thandi, Alfie and Justin. We decided that Coach John would be our leader this year. Only Louisa, Justin and Thandi had played before. So Coach John made the focus be on learning and having fun and that’s just what we did. We only had Justin for half a season but he proved to be a very effective player that would swoop in and save us. We were sad to lose him to the snow but happy he was part of our team this year. Alfie was the baby of our team but that didnt stop him from getting into it at all. It was great to watch him each week improve and become a great little player that we were lucky to have. Thandi is the teams fun lovely bubbly girl. She was there to help out when she could and she improved amazingly this year. Louisa was our backbone this year. She was always ready to help us out and was constantly a great player all year. She improved so much and is becoming a wonderful football player. Ollie has the most powerful kick in the team. He is fantastic at getting the ball where it needs to be and setting up goals. He learnt to be where he was needed and to play with his team mates really well. Bronte was fast and speedy when she wanted to be. She was always up in the action and trying to get a goal. She improved at teamwork and is becomming a great little soccer player. Darragh was a force all year. He was our everywhere man. Everywhere the ball was there was Darragh. He was in the thick of it all times and he never wanted to get off the field. He never gave up. He is becomming an amazing player. All the kids have been a pleasure to watch and improve and really started to play as a team. They should all be congratulated for their efforts. Coach John was wonderful for the kids and really made it fun for them. He taught them to be good sports and that it’s all about having fun. We had a great season and are looking forward to doing it again next year.

TEAM U7FThis year the under 7’s mixed team flourished under the coaching of Nick Hallam. All of the kids had a great time and they all improved significantly over the year. It was particularly good to see their team work coming together towards the end of the season. We look forward to the kids building on their skills next season. Fear the Dear!

To all of the parents, thanks very much for your support over the course of the season, your encouragement for the kids and also Nick was great.

To the Players, great work all.

Kash: What a great runner! His ability to control the ball and run around the opposition was amazing! It was like Kash was anywhere on the field at a moments notice, always watching what was happening and putting himself in the right position.

Zack: An absolutely solid player through the mid field, Zack would push straight through the crowd and amazingly come out with the ball at the other end.

Gabriel: His long-range shots were a thing of beauty. Gabriel could duck and weave to get into open space and the POW! Shoot from anywhere.

James: What a defender, he is an absolute natural. It was nearly impossible for the opposition to get the ball into the net when James was on the field. He was always keeping his eye on where the ball was and would be there lightning fast when it counted.

Finn: Great work passing the ball to his team mates after drawing the opposition to him. Finn was a great team player this year.

Taylor: Marked opposition players like a shadow. Taylor always had a great vision of what was happening on the field around him.

Melissa: Great at putting herself into spaces where players could pass to her. Melissa was a great runner this year and scored some amazing goals.

Wednesday: Her commitment to the team was second to none, ready to turn up and train and play every time. Seeing the joy on her face when on the field was an absolute pleasure. She also improved considerably during the year and did some great kicks and passes in the second half of the season.

TEAM U8E2019 was a big growth season for the U8Es. I won’t lie, it was a challange to be their manager at times, they are a handful but there was more fun than frustration. An amazing thing to learn was that fairness & equality are always at the centre of the kids dynamic. It felt like a big team with strong personalities. They all want to be on the field all of the time. Keeping them off felt like punishment and they scared me at times with their enthusiasm. I started the season knowing nothing about soccer and ended it much the same but there was no feeling like having the kids trust and attention. To watch them grow into their potential and rise to the challenges of being part of a team means I would do it all over again 10 times over. In this season they adapted and responded to the direction of two coaches, each with a different style and expectations of them. First, the boys were lucky to have Glen guide them with an intuitive style. He expected a lot from the boys and he got it. The boys were in a winning streak at the start of the season and their collective confidence was at an all -time high. Glen was committed to the team . He had their backs and he took them from strength to strength. It was hard to see Glen go. We missed him and the heart he brought to the field. Secondly Dave, was a young gun, he brought strategy to the team and he was keen to recognise the boys strength as individuals and guide them with his gentle approach to work with the whole. The boys had not operated as a team in the same wasy ever before. This is Dave’s legacy. With Dave the boys experimented with taking on positions and more technical aspects of the skill and sport. The boys played the game with grit, passion and determination. They won and lost with an attitude that’s the most important at this non competative level. The wonner was always SOCCER. I would like to thank the BMFC for all the support they recieved as a team. Secondly but as importantly I’d like to thank all the parent that rally week after week for the routine of the games and training. There would not be a season without you either.

Harvey: Stretch. Harvey showed total focus and fearlessness on the field but especially in his preffered position as goalie. He played hard and was unbelievable to watch the way he protected the goals and read the oppostion . I watched him fling, stretch and fly to save a ball from scoring.

Sam: Our big kicker. I will never forget seeing Sam recieve the ball to the head resulting in a bloody nose and after a short recovery showed courage and tenacity to be back on the field. His kicks are unrivalled and can cross a field . A true champ that developed in confidence over the season. Sam you are a true team member. Never forget it.

Sonny: Our smiling assassin. Sonny went about his games with an unassuming and quiet determinaton but showed focus and tenacity on the field. He took on any rival and outwitted and outpaced them time after time.

Luka: The fairest of them all. A real team player . Luka showed the sportsmanship and fairness at all times. He always looked for an opportunity to pass a ball and had his team mates back 100% of the time. He was never involved in a “situation” with oppostion and kicked a cracking BIG kick. He grew as a player over the season and became fearless to chase down, tackle and take down with the best of them.

Harry: Harry is a hero. Harry showed passion for the game. His heart always on the line with the way the game went. Aside from his love of the game he showed it at every opportunity. he was fast and furious and scored many goals over the season. He got knocked down and got back up again and again and again.

U8E CONT.

Charlie: Charlie is a champion. A rocket on the field with skills that come from practise and close observation. Charlie was always there to back up his team and I watched his confidence grow over the season. He takes the ball off the opposition like candy from a baby.

Cooper: Super Duper Cooper. Cooper has an all rounded ability. Toughness, fairness, speed , generosity and focus. Cooper always listened and took direction from coach with a maturity beyong his years. He was somehow in the centre of everything happening in the team. He is always right there. I loved watching him play and interact with his team.

Filip: A great sport. Although a short season for Filip he worked as a team member with as much commitment and enthusiasm as any other of the boys. Filip was fast and has a huge heart. He bought unfaltering kindness to the team.

Spike: Our speed demon. There is no one who can catch this kid. His name should be Speed not Spike. He showed maturity in how to handle the ball in situations that would test the best. He honed in on the ball and I watched that focus hone to a fine art over the season.

Isaac: This kid knows how to carry himself on a field! Always in the centre of action with style tenacity and confidence. Isaac always brought a bright light and confidence with him a sets himself apart as a natural born leader. I look forward to seeing his mad skills grow.

Matti: A bundle of energy. Matti brings a giddy enthusiasm but hones in on the ball like a real star. He takes coaches input and actions it. He is fearless when it comes to the ball and always give 100% of his commiment to the game.

Jai: Walks to the beat of his own drum. Jai is a no-fuss-no-frills-get-the-job-done team mate. He would happily fly under the radar but he never goes unnoticed. He is smart and listens to the coach. He is a real individual in his approach and does not get caught up in what the other boys are doing.

Managers award: Cooper. For always being a gentleman on the field and improving steadily and constantly over the season. Manager: Kelly Ross Coach: Glen Chapman / Dave

TEAM U9DFirst of all a massive thank you to Coach Ray and Coach Ben for their awesome effort both on the field and off in organising the boys. I remember one particularly cold training session down at the oval the coaches I think had had enough trying to rally them that they decided to let the boys play bullrush so I arrive and there and its freezing cold and really dark ( no floodlights) and the boys are just wearing shorts – boots shin pads in every direction just having a ball whizzing up and down the field avoiding being captured. The boys have bonded over this time and shared some great memories of winning and losing but it’s been wonderful to see them learn more about tactics, strategy and positional play. The boys finished in the middle of the competition but had some really inspiring games.Kai Goody = Another successful year – striking out and scoring goals and making massive effort to keep the ball away from the other team. Kai showed great determination this year as always.

Arlo Hankinson – Coach Ray has said Arlo would make a great keeper and I saw him on more than a few occasions put his body on the line to get the ball.

Kai O’Connor- Kai had some great streaks down the wing to score and help his team mates – lots of energy and enthusiasm and scored a few goals.

Malachi Slawitschka – Maliki really came in to his own this season really got into the play and talked the game up with the team and really got stuck in and hustled for the ball.

Paul Lee – Peter was the ideal defender always there to thwart the opposition with his timely kick’s. Paul would often be in the thick of the tussle to get ball.

Ben Luong– Ben’s first season and he has come on leaps and bounds and settled into the team and played with energy and lots of well-timed kicks.

Toby Wallace – Has such great control of the ball – a master dribbler you might say – weaving and dodging the opposition with his foot skills.

Harlem Hannah – Harlem had a great season and contributed to the team with his great tackling and determination to get the ball.

Finn Reid – Master of the well placed corner – yet again Finn kicked some awesome corners as well as some great goals and wing runs.

Josh Hunziker – This was Josh’s first season with the Mighty Deer’s and he played with great enthusiasm and contributed with some great tackles and passing as well as a few good cracks at the goal.

Manager: Jo/Justin Hankinson Coach: Ray Goody

TEAM W09DWhat a fantastic season of soccer for this great team of girls.

All year long on the sideline I heard over and over again, how well all the girls were doing, how much fun they were having, what a great season this was, how much they have learnt this year and how lucky we were to have Chris as their coach! I couldn’t agree this season saw some of the girls in the team play positions for the first time and under Chris instructions they all took to their positions brilliantly.

They all had a chance to try each position and discover where they like to play and what suited them best.

We were lucky to have lots of girls enjoy goalie, and there were some brilliant saves by Eva S, Hannah, Mary and after not being sure on her initial turn Neveah then couldn’t get enough and developed a love of the goalie position.

Our backs were so strong, and a pleasure to watch Hannah’s big kicks, Ruby consistently cleaning up any ball that came her way and Ellie fighting hard for that ball every chance she got, when Eva M played down the back the opposition didn’t know what to do – our little mighty mouse ducked and weaved controlling the ball until she was back up our end of the field.

Our speed girls Jenna Rhi and Marley! At times it was hard to tell who was who on the field but the skill the 3 of them showed was so impressive. Keeping the ball in along the sideline while taking it down the field. They just needed the tinniest gap and they were off, on many occasions ending up one on one with the poor opponent’s goalie!

Up the front lots of the season we had Cora and Mackenzie, Cora persistent in chasing the ball down and always finding great space to position herself. Mackenzie’s strong kicks and following through helped her scored some cracking goals.

The best part of the season was hearing the girls encourage each other, check on their own team mates and the other team if someone got hurt, watching them have fun and really love their soccer.

Thanks to all the parents of the Under 9Wd’s for a great year and thanks again to Chris for giving up your time and giving our girls so much more than lessons in soccer. Danielle

TEAM W10CFEAR THE DEER DOE

The girls in the 10WC team have been the epitome of teamwork this season and a real pleasure to watch. It takes a team to score a goal and there were plenty of those to celebrate this season. Every player stepped up to the role allocated to them by Chris ‘Super coach’ Jackins with grit and determination.

Erin was our rock in defence, ensuring our super goalies of Angel, Kirra and Emily were well supported at all times. These goalie girls, who also played at the back, were the eyes of our defence and were always on alert for the opposition. They were key to our success in many games. Juliet again demonstrated her versatility on the field, reliable in defence and effective in attack. This year we gave a huge responsibility to our younger team members of Hadley, Willow and Lola, playing up an age group and they did not let us down. Willow was always in position, working hard in defence. Lola was super supportive and solid on the wing so too Hadley who was fearless in taking on girls that were twice her size without hesitation.

Mia and Avrie were our unstoppable workhorses all season. They were always all over the field and the amount of mileage they clocked up would have rivalled any 1985 Corolla.

Summer played her role as striker tirelessly throughout the season and consolidated the team’s hard work up the field by planting the ball into the back of the net on many occasions with the obligatory cartwheel to follow.

The future of this team is exciting and they have all the markings of a formidable women’s side although we will miss Emily as she moves back to England very soon. Chris has worked to develop the potential of every player with a focus on positional play. The future of this team is assured- ‘Fear the Deer’ or should I say ‘Fear the Doe.’

TEAM U11FWOW, what an amazing season,

The results, played 17, won 17, everyone should be amazingly proud not only of the results but of the attitude and enthusiasm of all the boys in the team. Game days and training nights nearly always had 100% attendance which was a credit to the boys and the parents involved with the team.

A big thankyou to all players and parents for a very enjoyable season

Andy- Dependable right back with a solid boot to clear danger

Ash- Versatile player who can switch readily from defence to attack

Charlie- Great goalkeeper but equally capable of playing anywhere on the pitch with a fierce shot

Dane- Very capable defender or midfielder confident on the ball

Daniel- Enthusiastic player with a 100% attendance in training, plays well on either wing

Harrison- Poacher extraordinaire, lost count of the number of goals scored by H

James- Quiet player who just gets on with the job, plays equally well at left back or on the wing

Matteo- Skilful player, who we missed a lot when he succumbed to injury. Made a great comeback for the last few games.

Owen- Brilliant centre back, fearless in a tackle and always dependable

Ozzi- A player who just gets better and better every year, his enthusiasm is infectious, he was as equally sad as I, when he missed the last few games to tour Oz

Peter- Great goalkeeper who saved us on numerous occasions, also loves to play up front

Sam- Effortlessly skilful player, who loves to “meg “players

Taj- Conscientious defender but equally capable of switching to striker when the call arose

Zac – Skilful player with a huge heart, can run all day long, lost count of the times he switched defence into attack

TEAM W11D

W11D came together as a team beautifully this season, showing a resourcefulness and ability to self-organise which belies their years. Thanks to coach Thomas Foote who agreed to take on the position after a lack of interest from the parents, and who did a great job wrassling 11 boisterous girls while juggling his reffing and playing commitments throughout the winter months. Thanks also to the parents who stepped in as match day coach and trainers when needed.

Amelia made a commitment to work on her skills throughout the season, focusing on speed and endurance, and the results of her effort were clear when she scored a brilliant goal in the final game. Well done Amelia!

Amity was always a pleasure both to be with and to watch on the field, playing tirelessly in any position she was asked, and giving it 100% every moment. She turned up with a smile every single game.

Bobbie definitely didn’t look like someone who had never played soccer before, she could be known as the energizer bunny the way she burst into the team and slotted straight in to the midfield like an old hand.

Hannah is another player new to the game, and deserves heaps of praise for taking direction, conquering her fears and discovering her deadly boot! It was a joy to see her confidence grow throughout the season as she developed her skills.

Hollie played her guts out in every position over the months and was always reliable and uncomplaining. The most difficult thing about having Hollie in the team is knowing where to play her as she is good in every position.

Jarrah as always was our little terrier, tirelessly running rings around the opposition and speeding up the sidelines getting the ball into position to either score herself or pass to one of the strikers.

Kitty reliably and cheerfully volunteered to be goalie in the first half so long as she got to be striker in the second, and that way we got to see all her skills on display – from solid last line of defence to dazzling goal scorer.

Lucy set herself goals for the season and it was great to see her meet them, scoring a couple of brilliant goals with her bludgeoning high shots which a Premier League player would have found it difficult to stop!

Martina left the hockey world to bring her gifts to soccer this year and was a joy to watch! Another utterly dependable team member who brought her enthusiasm and cheerfulness on to the field and made magic.

W11D CONT.

Penelope has a cool demeanour on the field which must be intimidating to the opposition, especially when she plays a game like the first of the season, where she scored twice! She had to suffer the indignity of having her big brother for a coach but played through the pain and produced a solid season for her team.

Scarlett found her groove in defence this year after scoring the very first goal for the season in the first game. She took on a sweeper role, covering the entire back third of the field, and was cool as a cucumber slotting the ball back up into the midfield for other players to go into attack.

Coach: Thomas Foote Manager: Sara Lander

TEAM U13EA fabulous season for U13E, a blended team of the U12s and U13s. Barely a goal conceded, and although we had a bit of bad luck with points, we still made it through to the semis! Congratulations everyone! Our shooters were phenomenal, with Hunter, Alfie, Ollie and Zane fearlessly attacking even with a broken arm!

Also outstanding both attacking and defending were Alex, Josh, Jordan and James. Jarvis too who really went from strength to strength this year.

Solid in midfield and in defence, we have Ethan who was all over the pitch this year, Luke who really knows how to read the game and Harvey is an outstanding sweeper.

Joel and Jack were tenacious defenders, as was Bodhi with his brutal kick. Tommy ditto. Liam was a particularly good goalie and Byron was always solid in defence.

You made a fabulous team - well done everyone. Can’t wait for next year!

TEAM 14E The W14E girls were sensational this year playing up in an age group that pitted them often against girls who were not only up to three years older, but sometimes twice the size. However they never took a backward step and ended up third on the ladder - just one point away from second spot. After winning the first semi-final they were unlucky to bow out in the preliminary finals against Engadine Crusaders 0-2. However as a sign of just how good they were the Crusaders ultimately won the premiership beating Gawley Bay 3-0.

After playing together for the past few years and scratching out the odd win, the W14Es launched into the season and had an undefeated run for the first five weeks before finally being held to a draw. With their entourage of parents and supporters, the girls always made the games look like fun, and certainly at times helped add a few grey hairs to coach Nigel Austin’s head with their last-minute wins.

With so many young members on the team special mention should go to Jade Chivers who might have been one of the smallest on the field, but also had one of the biggest hearts. Likewise Bene Baxter who seems to be able to run down players twice her size. The discovery of the year may have been that Ava Stevens is a natural-born goalie.

For all the parents who have been part of this team for the past three years it was wonderful to see so many of the girls improve across the season and what they at times lacked in finesse they made up with tenacity and a determination to never give up - they are truly a champion team.

We will be back in 2020 but lose two mighty members of the team - Zoe Allsop Lander and Aeisha Stevill. Both these girls were critical members of the team - Zoe was a rock in defence and Aeisha was everywhere running down attackers in defence and racing past the opposition in attack.

A big thanks to coach Nigel Austin who must have an endless supply of tolerance and patience and to Matt Stevens for being at every training session to keep him company and sane.

TEAM W18A

2019 saw a completely different year for our soccer girls. After being in the grand final last year they were pushed up to A grade and this proved to be quite a challenge. Regardless of this all the girls (on most occasions) showed up to the games and were fully prepared to play even when we had no subs and give it their 100 percent effort. Although we finished up tied 5th this year, which wasn’t a bad effort at all we would like to congratulate the girls on their efforts and hope that they will all be returning next year maybe this time back in B grade. We would like to thank all the girls who came along to training this year and we look forward to next season and another great year! Sophie and Grace

TEAM AL8

Season’s end seems to arrive so quickly! The preliminary anticipation prior to the season commencing and then the acceptance of what the fates have determined by the final game for the year seems so fleeting. However, win, lose or draw the real value of the season is in the weekly connections enjoyed by players, parents, partners, extended families, friends and our increasing number of children. Of course it always is nice to be a winner and in this respect the boys definitely looked like contenders for the Finals again this season. They worked their way up the table and remained in the top four for a large part of the second half of the season. This year’s comp was extremely close with a matter of one to two points separating the top teams in the last weeks so each game was a must win. All looked ‘on track’ until the last game pre the semis when we were somewhat disadvantaged by illness, injury and missing team members. However, many of us are still scratching our heads about this game. Nothing seemed to go the boy’s way, and this was exacerbated by a VERY determined Barden Ridge. Perhaps it was The Ridge vibe, out of sorts biorhythms or …. Nevertheless, the boys gave it their best shot and despite being disappointed by the result their great sense of friendship and camaraderie prevailed.

To summarise the season:

The boys started strongly with an impressive win over Menai. We stumbled slightly after this but roared back into form on the 14Th April with a 5-1 win over Caringbah Redbacks. The mood was very upbeat. Next up was Barden Ridge and what a frustrating first half with the score remaining at 0-0. The team was finally rewarded with a 4-0 win after many missed goals inspiring Ian (our coach) to say in his usual sage and wry manner, “Goodness me, we did have some opportunities!”

The breakthrough game came on the 26th May with a 3-2 win over Bonnet Bay at their home ground Lakewood City. It was dark (the game started at 4.20) and the spectators were doing their best to keep warm when the boys scored the winning goal. As Bonnet Bay had been at the top of the table since the season began (and remained there until the end) this was a sensational achievement. We capitalised on this win with a 4-1 win against Barden Ridgebacks 2. Alex rewarded his mum’s presence with a goal, to the delight of all present. We moved to 3rd on the table.

Our next game was a slightly unusual event. Menai started with only 7 players which then increased to 9 just as the whistle blew. The weather was perfect and unusually mild for Winter. This appeared to affect the teams play as they were extremely relaxed and couldn’t seem to lift the intensity. Menai, on the other hand, belied their lack of starting numbers and were ferocious adversaries. We eventually won 1-0 after some heart stopping moments. As Ian has been heard to say, “It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win.”

AL8 CONT.The match at Caringbah North against Redbacks was memorable for a variety of reasons- bitter cold, a field where the grass had entirely disappeared and the attendance of multiple ambulances. Redbacks benefited from a completely unexpected bounce to score first. Then Glen dropped to the ground after a heavy collision with the Redbacks keeper. Both players stayed down for some time to the great concern of all spectators. We scored to equalise shortly thereafter and the Redbacks keeper went down for a second time after a completely innocuous raid by our forwards, where no apparent contact occurred. He didn’t get up this time and as we waited for the ambulance, umbrellas were held aloft to shelter him from the rain as the weather became increasingly unpleasant. Eventually two ambulances arrived and took him off to hospital. The game restarted and we were treated to a sublime ‘bend it like Beckham’ goal from Tristan on the sideline to conclude a very unique match.

Our 3-1 win against Barden Ridgebacks 2 kept us in the top four but our next game suffered from some highly idiosyncratic refereeing and the best we could do was a draw.

The team for this year was:Zac Bencun, Tristan Cleggett, Luke Colella, Justin Collette, Jeremy Curtain, Michael Cunningham, Scott Cunningham, Glen Hodson, Chris Jackson, Jack Layland, Matthew Maughan, Kyrin Mullard, Beau Sherrard, Robert Simpson, Brendan Smith, Andrew Stringfield, Simon Stringfield, Yannick Tidou, Andrew West, Adam White and Alex Woolfenden.

Thanks again boys for a thoroughly enjoyable season. You often put your bodies on the line and unfortunately suffered a range of injuries as a result. Hopefully, these are now pretty much a memory.

Thanks also to Ian our coach. A man with the right words at the right time and always a coach who has been a terrific role model on the sideline.

Thanks also to Keith and Lindsay. Our ‘Hydration Manager’ and ‘Watermelon Distributor’ par excellence!

TEAM AL5

For most of the lads it was their first time playing All Age after playing 21’s lastyear. Needing to strengthen the side, a few of the older Bundeena boys wererecruited back to the old fold who had valuable experience in the top flight.Preseason training was tough but the lads were committed and it showed inthe first 2 games with big wins. This drew the crowds down to Deer Park. The lads played high quality football.Every game was entertaining with highs and lows. This reflected on the tableas any team could beat anyone on their day.Coming into the semi’s the 2 top spots were taken, leaving 4 teams vying forthe 2 remaining spots and we were one of them. Needing to beat the top teamin our last round of normal competition was a must. The boys came through with flying colours to set up a semi-final with Kirraweewho they beat 2-1.With the lads on a roll, they met Barden Ridge in the Preliminary Final. Withgood support from the local faithful and the lads pumped, we were quietlyconfident. The first half we were all over them. They had nothing. It was the best footballI had seen all year. But alas we could not get the ball over the line and goalsare what wins matches and unfortunately we conceded late into the 1 st half.2 nd half we came out firing but a momentary lapse in concentration and wewere down 2-0. The lads kept fighting and fighting till the death however ourrun came to an end losing the fight 2-0.It was a great season lad’s one to be very proud of. You all played with passion, quality skill and great sportsmanship. It was an absolute pleasure being a partof the team.Until next time.Tell it to the Team.

TEAM WSF2019 saw the Senior Women’s team move up a grade from G to F, which according to our fearless goalie Sammy stood for fancy footwork, fantastic, fabulous, football. We also saw a few changes to the line up, losing 5 players due to pregnancy, location change, health and travel. But we also gained 7 new members to the team, who brought with them a mix of experience, enthusiasm and skills. Some had never played soccer before, but you would never have known it! From the very first game of the season it felt like we had all played together as a team before.

We had our share of injuries right from that very first game, with a broken bottom sending Michelle into early retirement and cracked ribs courtesy of Lilli Pilli’s No. 10 putting Sonja out of action for the first quarter of the season. A domino effect of injured quads with some of the newbies, resulted in a call out on Airtasker for a Physio student to be team physio to help the “Quad Squad”. Unfortunately the hope of a handsome young physio joining us on the sideline wasn’t to be......maybe next year! But by the halfway mark in the season all of the niggles seem to subside and we started hitting our strides as a team and realise the possibility of making the finals.

We’re a team of women that range in age from 20-54 and we were playing against teams where the oldest player was 25 and we were beating them in skill and determination! The season saw a mix of results with us winning more games than we lost and even seeing us at the top of the ladder at one point. But there were 3 teams in particular that gave us a run for our money – Barden Ridge – the team that left us black and blue, Lilli Pilli – the rib breakers and humpers (HBR) and Como – the team we find hard to beat!

At the end of the season we placed a very respectable 3rd on the table to make the semi finals versing Como, one of the nemesis teams…. In an equally matched and fair game of football we were unlucky to lose 2-1 in the dying minutes of the game, but could all walk away with our heads held high knowing that we had all put in our best game. Considering we had moved up a grade, to make the finals was a fabulous achievement in itself and every single member of our team should be proud of themselves!

Finally to Claude, a huge THANKYOU for being such an encouraging, inspiring and knowledgeable coach. Our ball passing and game skills are thanks to your wonderful passion for football and commitment to us. You deserve a special award for navigated your way around 19 feisty, strong willed women! 2019 MINI ROO REFEREES

TEAM 045C

For the first time in many a year we had the numbers to go up a grade to 45’s. Itcame with the nice feeling of, “Yeah, this season will be easier than the 35’s” runningaround the paddock playing against a heap of overweight, upper middle aged gents, but no, how wrong. Might as well have stayed in the 35’s!!!Anyway, we went ok and had fun doing it. Being graded into the ‘C’s’, it came downto winning or a draw in the last match to make the Semi’s. We lost!! So 5 th we came. Not too bad. We gave all the top teams a run for their money and all the bottomteams gave us a run for our money!! “If only we had have won that last one we lostto team coming last!!”The top four teams all had 22 blokes signed on and a coach, so every game theyhad 5 subs and a coach, coaching. We had 17. 16 after round 2 and a seasonending injury. 15 after round 4 when ‘Deer of last Year’ Captain Muz rolled his anklein a Buckle Reserve pothole!! So we were short all season really. That let us downplus a healthy dose of bad luck, with an uncanny habit of unbelievable saves offopposition keepers, who were not unbelievable!! Well, that’s football. Had fun tryingand the few beers and banter post match made it all worthwhile.Need more signed on next year.Cheers.Pete
