No matter what kind of bouquet you have been given, a flower delivery inevitably makes any home more inviting and cheerful. The only disappointing thing about a bouquet of flowers, however, is when they begin to wilt before their time. In order to make sure you get the most life out of your fresh flowers, follow these tips Most flower bouquets come with a life extender packet. Dump the contents of this packet into the water as soon as your arrives in order to keep bacteria from growing in the water. Bacteria threaten the life of the flowers because it can develop in the stems and block water from traveling up the stems to the flowers. If your flowers did not come with a life extender packet, crushing an aspirin and dumping that into the water has the same effect. One thing that people do not often realize is that fresh flowers need fresh water. Change the water in your flower vase every couple of days for the best results. When you change the water do not forget to thoroughly wash the vase as well. After you have filled the clean vase with clean water, add another packet of flower food or another aspirin. Do this every time you change the water to keep your flowers alive as long as possible, making sure that you follow the directions on the packet of food. It is possible to give a bouquet of flowers too much food, which will result in the flowers dying sooner than they should. The water should be room temperature and should be free of floating debris such as leaves or stems. The presence of these remains may also result in the unwanted growth of bacteria. Before you place your flowers back into the vase of fresh water, it is important that you cut the bottom of the stems. Cut up to 1 inch off of the stems, at an angle, every time you change the water. Cutting at an angle makes it easier for the water to flow up the stems. If possible, use sharp scissors to avoid smashing the stems and therefore halting the flow of water. If you are worried about losing the look of the arrangement while you cut the stems, simply place a rubber band around the stems while you cut, and remove it before your place the flowers back in the vase. Finally, display the flowers in a cool environment. The ideal room temperature for a floral arrangement is between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If this is not feasible you can still help your flowers to last longer by keeping them out of direct sunlight and away from vents which dispense hot or cold air.
