Transparency for greatest confidenceDay after day, vast quantities of bunker oil are pumped into the fuel tanks of passenger ships, container ships, tankers and bulk carriers. Even the slightestmeasurement inaccuracies during this bunkering process causes shortages in the “cash register” and time-consuming disputes.
As we all know, the traditional quantity measurement via tank gauging, for example, can be associated with a great amount of uncertainty due to error prone volume to mass calculation as well as not considered air content caused by tank stripping and the “cappuccino effect”. Very often, this leads to incorrect billing and unwanted bunker disputes between supplier and buyer.
For these reasons, ship owners and barge operators have been increasingly installing special bunker fuel metering systems that ensure transparent and highly accurate bun-kering. These systems contain Coriolis flowmeters, which have been tried and tested for decades in custody transfer applications. Even port authorities have begun to stipulate these measuring systems.
We at Endress+Hauser have developed a sophisticated and reliable bunker fuel metering system for you (see Page 3). In this brochure, we present this measuring system and give answers to five central questions that customers frequently pose:

Improved profitabilityOur measuring system pays off
Can the new bunker fuel measuring system from Endress+Hauser increase my profit in the long term? The answer to this questionis definitely “Yes”. You save considerably on both time and money with our solution. Our measuring system is based upon the proven Coriolis mass flow measurement, which has been used success-fully in custody transfer applications in the oil and gas industry for decades.
Based on this, our specialists have developed a patented bunker metering system that measures highly viscous and aerated bunker fuel with great measuring accuracy and thus saving up to 3 hours per bunkering operation. Time-consuming manual tank sounding is not necessary. In this regard, testing has confirmed that our Promass Coriolis flowmeters capture high-viscosity bunker fuels with excellent accuracy (see following page).

Precision for the real worldWater calibration is equivalent to oil calibration
It is customary in the oil and gas industry to calibrate flowmeters with oil, since traditional measurement methods are greatly dependent upon liquid properties. These costly and time-consuming calibrations can be completely omitted with Coriolis mass flowmeters from Endress+Hauser.
Testing on the accredited calibration rigs of the Société du Pipeline Sud Européen (SPSE) in Fos-sur-Mer (FR) and at the National Engineer-ing Laboratories (NEL) in Glasgow (UK) defini-tively demonstrated that our water-calibrated Promass F and Promass X Coriolis flowmeters also measure hydrocarbons of various densities and viscosities with the same high accuracy. This fact has also been confirmed and certified by the NMi (National Metrology Institute) in the Netherlands in accordance with MI-005. As a result, the Promass F and Promass X have easily fulfilled the strict requirements of accuracy class 0.3 of OIML R117.

Bunker fuel metering systems6
Have you ever had the feeling that you have paid too much for a delivered quantity because of irregularities duringbunkering, or that you have invoiced too little? If so, this would hardly be a surprise. It is nearly impossible to measure aerated fuel oils using traditional measurement methods.
With our certified bunker fuel measuring system, your risk of “flying blind” is now over. During the fueling process, multiple process parameters are simultaneously monitoredand graphically displayed as metering profiles. These meas-urement data can also be printed out, thus creating transpa-rency and trust in the measurement. The outcome: unquestionable measurement results and therefore no more time-consuming and costly bunker disputes.

Sustainable efficiencyOur measuring system ensures efficient bunker deliveries
Discrepancies in the quantity of bunker fuel delivered typically mean additional costs and unnecessary loss of time. Sound familiar?
We have put an end to this. Our bunker fuel measuring system works with a high-accuracy Coriolis mass flow measurement, which has been used with great success in the oil and gas industry for decades. This measurement method guarantees a reliable and efficient bunkering process, eliminating extra effort required for the conventional, error-prone tank sounding method. As Coriolis flowmeters record the bunker fuel quantity directly in mass units, there is no need for conversions. All this can shorten ship refueling processes up to 3 hours.

Guaranteed system integrityOur measuring system is sealed and tamperproof
Given that a great deal of money is at stake in thebunker fuel business, a measuring system’s integ-rity and reliability are decisive. You can trust us in this regard – no ifs, ands or buts. Both the individualdevices and the entire measuring system are sealed after installation and thereby protected.
The certificate issued by NMi in Dordrecht (Nether-lands) confirms that the hardware and software of our bunker fuel measuring system meet all of the requirements in accordance with MID (MI-005) and thus also offers the required system integrity – both for measuring heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine gas oil (MGO). In addition, our bunker fuel measuring system is recognized and approved for commercial use by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore.
And that’s not all. Each and every of our devices are calibrated on accredited calibration facilities (ISO/IEC 17025), fulfilling the important require-ment for seamless traceability according to national standards. Our measuring system reflects longtime application experience in loading and unloading oil tankers, as well as in consumption measurement of heavy fuels on ships. Last but not least, our system guarantees that everything is running OK during bunkering as is ensured by a wide variety of interrogation and monitoring functions.
