Submissions to the annual Friends of the Burbank Public Library Amateur Photography Contest will be accepted from February 1—22, 2014 at the Reference Desk of the Burbank Central Library. The contest is open to amateur photographers of any age. Only one photograph may be submitted by each participant.

Contest rules and entry form are available at any Burbank Library or on the website [http://www.burbank.lib.ca.us/friends/photo-contest]. Winners will be determined by a panel of judges comprised of professional photographers who volunteer their time for this event.

A reception will be held to honor the winners on March 13th at the BUENA VISTA BRANCH LIBRARY, due to space limitations at Central Library. All are wel-come to the reception; winners will be notified by phone or email. Photos that are chosen for display will be exhibited at the CENTRAL LIBRARY Auditorium from March 14 through April 16.

Take Aim at the Friends’ 2014 Amateur Photography Contest!

If you enjoy the crime fiction of Michael Connelly, John Harvey, Lee Child, and others of that ilk, be sure to check into the hardboiled novels of Mark Billingham, author of Britain’s bestselling Tom Thorne series. He has published eight novels featuring the London police detective with a passion for country music.

The ninth in the series, From the Dead, was just pub-lished in the US this month. Donna Langford is being released from prison after serving ten years for conspiring to murder her sleazy husband. But before she’s even out, she receives an anonymous letter containing a photo of her husband -- alive and well. DI Thorne is asked to look into it at the request of a young woman aspiring to becoming a PI.

The Library owns the DVD based on Billingham’s first two Tom Thorne novels, Sleepyhead and Scaredycat. Original-ly airing on Britain’s Sky One, the six-part series Thorne stars David Morrissey (seen on The Walking Dead).
